After playing sparingly as a freshman John Nestor is making progress at corner this spring at Iowa where he hopes to fill the void left by Cooper DeJean’s entry into the NFL Draft. The native of Chicago appeared in 10 games as a freshman and is drawing comparisons to former star Riley Moss.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger has announced the addition of three transfers to the 2024-25 Iowa State roster. Seattle transfer Brandton Chatfield, Northern Iowa transfer Nate Heise and Charlotte transfer Dishon Jackson will all join the Cyclones this summer.
Chatfield is a 6-10 forward out of Orofino, Idaho who played for the Redhawks the last three seasons. Chatfield comes to Iowa State with one season of eligibility remaining. Chatfield will be the first known player from Idaho in program history.
He started all 37 games for Seattle last season, ranking second on the team in rebounds per game at 5.4. He averaged 9.4 points per game, while shooting 60.1 percent from the floor. He also tallied 30 blocked shots and 15 steals. Chatfield was named to the NABC Honors Court in 2022 and was a WAC All-Academic selection in 2022 and 2023.
“Brandton brings tireless work habits and a blue-collar mentality to the court each day,” Otzelberger said. “His skill level at his size will be an asset to our offense. Defensively he takes tremendous pride in his team getting stops and you can count on him to block out. Brandton’s experience will serve our program immediately upon his arrival.”
Chatfield scored in double figures in 14 of his 37 games, including a pair of games with a career-high 18 points. He recorded three double-doubles on the year, while reaching double figure rebound totals four times. He just missed a fourth double-double with nine points against Utah Tech.
In three seasons at Seattle, Chatfield started 87 of the 99 games he appeared in. He led the Redhawks with 5.4 rebounds per game in 2022-23, while averaging 7.0 points per game. He was 22-of-56 (39.3 percent) from downtown in 2022-23 as well. Chatfield started his career at Washington State with fellow transfer Dishon Jackson and former Cyclone Aljaž Kunc. Chatfield redshirted the 2019-20 season and appeared in seven games in 2020-21 before transferring to Seattle.
Heise is a 6-5 guard out of Lake City, Minn. who played for the Panthers the last four years. Heise comes to Iowa State with one season of eligibility remaining and can apply for a medical redshirt for missing a majority of the 2022-23 season.
An All-Missouri Valley Conference Third Team selection, Heise appeared in and started 32 of the 33 games for the Panthers last season. He led Northern Iowa with 431 points, averaging a career-best 13.4 points per game. He connected on 47-of-132 3-pointers (35.6%). He averaged 6.1 rebounds per game, while also leading the Panthers with 78 assists (2.4 per game). Heise earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District First Team honors this season.
“Nate’s competitive spirit stands out in all that he does on the court,” Otzelberger said. “His basketball IQ, shooting ability and strength in attacking the paint will elevate our offense. Defensively he takes tremendous pride in shutting down an opponent’s best player. Nate is a proven winner and will immediately add to our culture.”
He scored in double figures in 22 of the 32 games he played in last season. Heise recorded four double-doubles on the year, scoring at least 19 points in each one of them. He just missed a triple-double against Belmont, finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. He had multiple steals in nine games, including three against North Texas.
During his junior year, he appeared in two games before suffering a season-ending hand injury. He scored 24 points in the two games. He started all 32 games as a sophomore, averaging 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He started 21 games as a freshman, averaging 7.6 points per game. He was named to the Missouri Valley All-Freshman Team.
Jackson is a 6-11 center out of Oakland, Calif. who played for the 49ers this season. Jones comes to Iowa State with two seasons of eligibility remaining after spending three years at Washington State, where he was teammates with fellow transfer Brandton Chatfield and former Cyclone Aljaž Kunc.
“Dishon possesses tremendous offensive skill, power and versatility,” Otzelberger said. “He’s a mismatch player that can create advantages and facilitate offense. Defensively, he’s an effective rim protector with terrific rebounding instincts. The maturity and leadership that Dishon has demonstrated will immediately impact our program.”
Jackson started all 30 games he appeared in for the 49ers last season, averaging 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.9 blocks and 0.6 steals per game. He was second on the team in rebounding and third in scoring. He scored at least 15 points in 10 games, while reaching double figures in 17 games. He tallied a career-high 21 points against UAB. He notched two double-doubles on the year, including a career-high 12 rebounds against Tulsa. He had a career-high seven assists against East Carolina to go along with 10 rebounds and five points.
Prior to going to Charlotte last season, Jackson was at Washington State for three seasons. He made 49 appearances for the Cougars, including 19 starts. He redshirted his final season in Pullman due to an injury he suffered during the 2021-22 season. He averaged 7.2 points per game as a freshman for the Cougars, as he earned PAC-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention honors.
The bodies were recovered one day after it was announced four people were arrested in connection with the disappearance of 27-year-old Veronica Butler and 39-year-old Jilian Kelley. The mothers were traveling together from Hugoton, Kansas to pick up Butler’s children in Eva, Oklahoma from a children’s birthday party but the women never reached their destination. Their vehicle was later found abandoned on a rural highway in Texas County, Oklahoma, about 11 miles south of Elkhart, Kansas, on the Oklahoma-Kansas state line, three miles short of where they were supposed to pick up their children.

(Greenfield, Iowa) – The Adair County Sheriff’s Office reports a former Atlantic woman was arrested last week for Driving While Barred, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. 27-year-old Brittany Marie Asay, of Dubuque, was taken into custody following a traffic stop in Stuart at around 11:30-p.m. on April 10th. During an investigation, the Stuart K9 Officer and his K9 were deployed. The K9 gave a positive indication to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle, a 2014 Dodge Charger. A probable cause search was conducted, resulting in the locating of several items of known drug paraphernalia, including a large glass bong, a marijuana pipe in the form of a bracelet, a marijuana grinder, a metal sorting tray, and a pipe used to smoke THC wax. Asay was released later that same day on a $1,000 bond.
On April 11th, Adair County Deputies arrested 43-year-old Randy Scott Shuey, of Casey, on a Federal warrant for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Shuey was held without bond until being turned over the the ATF the following day.
18-year-old Lucas Kaden Wilson, and 19-year-old Cody Ryan Brunow, both of Woodbine, were arrested early Saturday morning (April 13th) in Adair, on Felony warrants for Participating in a Riot. Both men were held in the Adair County Jail until released a short time later, on $5,000 bond, each.
(Glenwood, Iowa) – Police in Glenwood report two people were arrested over the weekend. On Sunday, 35-year-old William Wilsey, of Bellevue, NE, was arrested for OWI/2nd offense. His bond was set at $2,000. And, on Saturday, 54-year-old Kenneth Coyle, of Glenwood, was arrested for OWI/1st offense. His bond was set at $1,000. Coyle posted bond and was released.
(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic Police Department today (Monday) released a report on arrests and citations issued between March 22nd and April 14th. Those arrested include:
On April 14th: 25-year-old Rudy Altamirano, of Atlantic, for OWI.
Last Saturday, (April 13), 28-year-old G Love Kovac, of Atlantic, was arrested for Violation of a No Contact Order.
On April 12th: 28-year-old KR Takauo, of Atlantic, for Public Intoxication, and, 30-year-old Taylor Force, of Atlantic, on two counts of Child Endangerment.
Last Thursday, Atlantic Police arrested 39-year-old Winser Ekiek, of Atlantic, for Driving While License Barred
On the 10th, 50-year-old Dan Christensen, of Atlantic, was arrested for Public Intox., Disorderly Conduct, Interference with Official Acts, and Consumption of Alcohol in a Public Place.

On the 6th, 34-year-old Brett Edward Pryor, of Atlantic, was arrested for: Assault while participating in a Felony (3 counts); Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree (for damage/loss amounting to $300 to $700); Public Intoxication; Interference with Official Acts; Possession/Carrying of a Dangerous Weapon while under the influence, and Going Armed with Intent. His bond was set at $20,000. Separately, 39-year-old Winser Ekiek, of Atlantic, was arrested on the 6th, for Driving While License is Barred.
On April 5th, 28-year old Sheets Atan, of Atlantic, was arrested for Public Intox. & Disorderly Conduct.
Two Atlantic men were arrested for Public Intoxication on April 4th: 37-year-old Jeffrey Knight, and 23-year-old Luke Altheide, were taken into custody. On April 3rd, A-PD Officers arrested 47-year-old Terrance Frazier, of Atlantic, for Assault Causing Bodily Injury. And, on the 2nd, 28-year-old G Love Lovac, of Atlantic, was arrested for Violation of a No Contact Order.

(Radio Iowa) – House Speaker Pat Grassley says Republican lawmakers are working on another round of state income tax cuts. “We’re having good conversation around the tax policy that’s still floating around here,” Grassley says. “I feel confident we’ll be able to achieve speeding up the tax cut before we head home.” Tax cuts approved in 2022 will shrink the state individual income tax to a single rate just under four percent by 2026.
In January, Governor Reynolds suggested going lower, to three-point-65 percent (3.65%) and making that rate retroactive to January 1st of THIS year. Grassley says House Republicans are developing a plan. “I don’t think it’s been settled what that will look like,” Grassley says, “but I feel pretty confident that we’ll be able to find resolution on that.” Tomorrow (Tuesday), is the 100th day of the 2024 legislative session. It’s a target date for adjourning the Iowa General Assembly and the last day legislators get expense money in addition to their salary, but there’s no legal deadline for concluding the session.
Later today (Monday), the House Appropriations Committee will meet to consider six different bills outlining state spending plans for the budgeting year that begins July 1st. The Iowa SENATE has released a tentative schedule for debating nine bills today (Monday).
