ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter took a step forward in rehabbing a shoulder injury that has sidelined him all season, throwing off a mound for the first time. The 2006 NL Cy Young winner threw 26 pitches Wednesday several hours before the Cardinals played the Chicago White Sox. He’s scheduled to throw again Friday, then a few more times next week. The Cardinals are hopeful Carpenter, who was 11-9 last season and then went 4-0 in the postseason for the World Series champions, can return sometime after the All-Star break. Carpenter broke down in spring training with a nerve-related ailment that sapped strength in his throwing shoulder, after throwing 273 1-3 innings in the 2011 regular season and postseason. The 37-year-old Carpenter said the intensity level was comparable to a session prior to the team reporting for spring training in mid-February. The right-hander said everything feels fine and is guardedly optimistic he’ll pitch this season.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed backup tight end Martin Rucker on injured reserve with a right knee injury that will require surgery. The Chiefs made the move official Wednesday while in the midst of a three-day minicamp. Rucker hurt his knee during one of the Chiefs’ voluntary offseason workouts June 1. He was signed as a free agent to provide depth behind Tony Moeaki, who is returning from a torn left ACL that knocked him out during last preseason. Rucker is a former fourth-round draft pick out of the Cleveland Browns, where current Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel had served as head coach. Rucker played in 12 games with the Browns, Cowboys and Jaguars over the past four seasons. He had two catches for 17 yards.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn struck out a career-high 12 to stay tied for the major league lead in wins and Carlos Beltran hit his NL-best 19th home run Wednesday night, sending the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the White Sox that ended Chicago’s eight-game road winning streak. Beltran homered in the third inning off Jake Peavy (6-2) and had three of the four hits for the Cardinals, who have scored only seven runs in the last five games and totaled a single run for the third straight game. They’ve won just five of 14. Lynn (10-2) allowed three hits in 7 1-3 innings and joined Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who threw a one-hitter at Tampa Bay earlier in the night, as the only 10-game winners in the majors.
Students in at least three Iowa swimming pools will be taking part in today’s (Thursday’s) attempt to set a new record for the world’s largest swimming lesson. Pools in Algona, Altoona and Harlan are among those in 46 states and 24 countries on five continents taking part in the world’s record attempt. They’ll be holding simultaneous lessons at 10 A-M. Debbi Cooper, an environmental specialist at the state health department, says the half-hour lesson will cover the basics. “For beginners, all the way down to blowing bubbles to how to stay safe in the water, never swim alone,” Cooper says. “They’ll be doing front floats, back floats and maybe even get into the crawl and back stroke and things like that.” The goal, she says, is to convince parents learning to swim is important.
Cooper says, “Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of one and five and it’s shown that if a child does not participate in swimming lessons by third grade, chances are, they never will learn to swim.” A study from the Archive of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine showed participation in formal swimming lessons was associated with an 88-percent reduction in the risk of drowning in children between one and four. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Daboll stood in the middle of a practice field barking instructions at quarterback Matt Cassel, who proceeded to drop back and throw a perfect pass to Jonathan Baldwin. For the time being, his No. 1 wide receiver. The Chiefs opened their mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday without wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who has not yet signed his franchise tender. That means Bowe is not under contract, and technically is exempt from the last series of workouts before training camp in late July.
Whenever Bowe arrives, it’s likely he’ll be playing catch-up in learning the new offense being installed by Daboll, who replaced Bill Muir as offensive coordinator. The Chiefs have otherwise had perfect attendance at just about every workout, allowing them to quickly pick up Daboll’s system.
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — IndyCar drivers Will Power and Scott Dixon, who rank first and second in the points chase, will face 10-spot starting grid penalties for this week’s race in Milwaukee after blowing their engines testing at Iowa. IndyCar director of engine development Trevor Knowles says Dixon blew an engine Tuesday morning testing on Iowa’s .875-mile oval, while Power’s went out later in the day. IndyCar has mileage minimums before teams can change engines, and neither Power nor Dixon had reached those yet. The setback shouldn’t be bad for either driver, though, since there is usually room to pass on Milwaukee’s oval. Takuma Sato and Josef Newgarden also have to serve penalties this weekend because they didn’t refit their Indy practice engines when their racing engines recently expired.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska women’s basketball coach and Ankeny native Connie Yori has received a two-year contract extension through 2017.
Athletic director Tom Osborne said Tuesday that Yori deserved to be rewarded for a 2011-12 season in which the Cornhuskers went 24-9, including 10-6 in their first year in the Big Ten, and advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament.
Yori, who earned a base salary of $660,000 last year, will be paid $673,000 in 2012-13.
The Cornhuskers lost to Kansas in the first round of the NCAA tournament and finished the season ranked No. 22.
Yori, entering her 11th season at Nebraska, has guided the Huskers to eight postseason tournament appearances and more than 20 wins a season over the past nine years.
