Congratulations to the Atlantic girls track team.  The average GPA for the second semester was 3.29.  This qualifies the 26 team members for “Academic All-State” honors as a team.  Team members Taylor Barry, Marissa Berns, Paige Kennon, Melanie Nielsen, Makenzie Holmes, Kristin Johnk, Erin Shannon and Brienna Steffens helped the effort by earning perfect 4.0 grade points.

Paige Kennon received the prestigious individual “Academic All-State” award.  In order to win this award you have to have a cumulative grade point of 3.8, an ACT score of 28 and must have participated in the state track meet.

Congratulations also to the seven members who received Hawkeye 10 “Academic All-Conference” awards.  They include Paige Kennon, Taylor Barry, Ali Krogman, Melanie Nielsen, Marissa Berns, Sam Petersen and Sam McConnell.

Girls State Soccer Tournament to Move To Des Moines’ Cownie Soccer Park

Sports

June 20th, 2012 by Jim Field

The Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union selected Des Moines’ James W. Cownie Soccer Park as the new home of the Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournament at its June 20th meeting.
The Cownie Soccer Park will serve as the host venue for the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournaments. The IGHSAU also reviewed host proposals from the City of Muscatine and the Cedar Valley Sports Commission.
“We are pleased to bring the Girls State Soccer Tournament to Des Moines,” said Mike Dick, Executive Director of the IGHSAU. “This was an extremely difficult decision. Muscatine and Cedar Valley both have outstanding soccer venues. However, I have been impressed with the many improvements that have been made at the Cownie Soccer Park. It is a top-notch soccer facility and will be a great venue for state tournament teams and their fans.”
Muscatine has served as the home of the Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournament since the IGHSAU sanctioned girls soccer in 1998.
“This has been a bittersweet day. We are excited to bring state soccer to Des Moines, but we can’t thank the city of Muscatine, Muscatine High School and the Muscatine Parks and Recreation staff enough for the outstanding job they have done hosting the state soccer tournament,” said Dick. “We have built some great relationships with some terrific people over the last 15 years.”
The James W. Cownie Soccer Park has 12 soccer fields. The four fields that will be utilized during the state soccer tournament have lights and the championship field has bleacher seating for 2,000 people along with a press box.  Another field seats 750 people.
The park has undergone 1.8 million dollars in renovations that include 12 completely rebuilt fields, new drainage, irrigation and sports turf sod.  The park serves as the home venue for the Drake and Grand View University soccer teams. Cownie Park has also hosted the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Championships, along with NAIA men’s and women’s soccer championships.

Sports

June 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Scott Sitz gave up five hits and struck out eight in a season-high 6 2-3 innings, and Florida State eliminated UCLA from the College World Series with a 4-1 victory Tuesday night. Florida State (50-16) plays Arizona on Thursday, needing to beat the Wildcats twice to reach the championship round. No. 2 national seed UCLA (48-16) was knocked out a day after No. 1 Florida was eliminated from the opposite bracket. Sitz (4-3) had not made it through five innings in six of his previous seven outings. The junior held the Bruins to two singles through five innings and struck out the side in the sixth after UCLA loaded the bases. UCLA starter Zack Weiss (3-3) was pulled after getting just one out. Bases-loaded walks in the opening inning produced the Seminoles’ first two runs.

Fla St. CWS player suspended after shoplifting arrest

Sports

June 19th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida State coach Mike Martin suspended infielder John Holland indefinitely Tuesday after the freshman was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at an Omaha sporting goods store. The suspension was announced a few hours before the Seminoles faced UCLA in the College World Series. Holland was the Seminoles’ designated hitter in their first two CWS games. The infielder was batting .243 for the season, and appeared in 41 games, 16 as a starter. Martin said that Holland “made a serious error in judgment.” The coach said the university would have no further comment. Omaha police said security at the Scheels store spotted the 19-year-old Holland and 23-year-old Steve Holland about 4:20 p.m. Monday changing the price tag on merchandise. The two attempted to purchase the items for the lower price. It was unknown if or how the Hollands were related. The men were booked for shoplifting and released after posting bond.
