MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins have had a number of losses in June, 17 to be exact. The latest one might be the toughest. The Marlins led 6-1 in the eighth inning before Heath Bell coughed up four runs in the ninth to the St. Louis Cardinals, who received RBI hits from Rafael Furcal and pinch-hitting pitcher Joe Kelly in the 10th to escape with an 8-7 victory Monday night. After halting a six-game losing streak with a win on Sunday, the Marlins have lost 16 of 19. Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook allowed two runs in six innings. St. Louis will send RHP Kyle Lohse (6-2, 2.85 ERA) to the mound today (Tuesday), to face RHP Carlos Zambrano (4-5, 4.01 ERA), who is 12-6 in 31 appearances against the Cardinals.
NEW YORK (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals prospect Mike Swinson has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance under baseball’s minor league drug program. Swinson, an outfielder for Class-A Palm Beach, tested positive for Methylhexanimine. The commissioner’s office announced the ban on Monday and said it was effective immediately.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Konner Wade threw his third straight complete game, Robert Refsnyder homered for the second game in a row and Arizona beat two-time defending national champion South Carolina 5-1 in the opener of the College World Series finals Sunday night. Wade (11-3) limited the Gamecocks to six hits in a steady outing to help the Wildcats (47-17) move within a win of their first national championship since 1986 and fourth overall. The Gamecocks (49-19) must beat Arizona twice to become the first team since Southern California in the early 1970s to win three championships in a row. Refsnyder, batting .444 (8 of 18) in the CWS, went 2 for 3 and was intentionally walked twice. He hit a two-run homer off Forrest Koumas (2-3) in the first to give Arizona the lead, and he scored in the fifth on Bobby Brown’s single to make it a four-run game.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Carlos Beltran had three RBIs and Matt Holliday and Allen Craig each had two, powering the St. Louis Cardinals to an 11-8 victory Sunday and their first three-game sweep in Kansas City since 2009. Mike Moustakas had two home runs for the Royals, who gave up 41 hits and 30 runs to their state rivals in the three games. The previous weekend in St. Louis, the Royals won two out of three. Beltran gave the Cardinals an early lead with a three-run homer in the first, lining Jonathan Sanchez’s 0-2 pitch 389 feet over the fence for his 20th home run after Craig doubled and Holliday walked.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Pole sitter Dario Franchitti was knocked out of the IndyCar race Saturday night in Iowa after his engine blew out before the green flag dropped. Franchitti’s car started smoking on the backstretch, just after a caution flag came out because of issues with Alex Tagliani’s car. Franchitti says the engine, which he used to win the Indianapolis 500 in May, was making strange noise before it went out. It’s the first time Franchitti has failed to finish back-to-back races since the last event of 2004 and the first one of 2005. Franchitti, the three-time defending series champion, started the race in seventh place and will likely drop further because of the setback.
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Hunter-Reay passed Scott Dixon with 12 laps to go and held on to win for the second straight week in a wild IndyCar Series race that ended under caution Saturday night. Hunter-Reay, the winner last week at the Milwaukee Mile, moved to second in the season standings with his seventh career IndyCar victory — the most among active U.S. drivers. The victory was Andrettti Autosport’s fourth in six races in Iowa. Teammate Marco Andretti was second, followed by Tony Kanaan and Dixon. The It was only fitting Hunter-Reay would win under caution, because 10 of the 25 cars failed to finish. Pole sitter Dario Franchitti was knocked out after his engine blew before the green flag dropped — a blow that could cripple his shot at a fourth straight series title. Points leader Will Power was bounced just 68 laps in after E.J. Viso hit him from behind. Power’s lead dwindled to three points.
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Esteban Guerrieri won the Indy Lights race in Iowa on Saturday night, the Argentinian’s third victory of the season. Guerrieri took over the lead with 44 laps left when Tristan Vautier was given a drive-through penalty for blocking. Guerrieri then held off Gustavo Yacaman, who moved up from eighth to finish second, and Victor Carbone. Vautier finished fourth after starting on the pole. The race was scheduled to start before the IndyCar race won by Ryan Hunter-Reay. But storms forced officials to move the Indy Lights race back, and it didn’t start until nearly midnight local time.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – South Carolina opens the College World Series finals against Arizona on Sunday night trying to become the first school in 40 years to win three straight national championships. Gamecocks coach Ray Tanner hasn’t announced his starting pitcher. Sophomore right-hander Konner Wade (10-3) will start for Arizona (46-17). Tanner says the Gamecocks (49-18) are pretty good but aren’t the 1927 Yankees. He adds that it’ takes some luck to reach the finals three years in a row. The Gamecocks had to replace five regulars from the team that beat Florida in last year’s finals. The last school to win three titles in a row was Southern California in the 1970s. Arizona this season is batting .330 and averaging seven runs a game.
