DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. wrestler Stephany Lee has been suspended for a year and must give her up spot on the Olympic team after testing positive for marijuana. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Thursday says Lee tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol acid, a marijuana metabolite, at the Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City on April 21. Lee, who also tested positive for marijuana in 2009, has accepted the sanctions. She must forfeit any medals, points or prizes dating back to her positive test. Ali Bernard, who lost to Lee in a best-of-three championship series at the Olympic Trials at 72 kilograms, has been declared the trials champion and has been nominated to represent the United States in London.

Earlier, the Rockets took Connecticut guard Jeremy Lamb at No. 12 and Iowa State forward Royce White at No. 16. The 6-5 Lamb entered the draft after just two college seasons. He averaged 17.7 points and 4.9 rebounds for the Huskies last year and became just the sixth sophomore in Connecticut history to score 1,000 career points (1,060). Hawkeyes Defensive Hopes Rest on LB Corps

Sports

June 28th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s defensive line needs to be rebuilt, its secondary has holes to fill in key spots and all the defensive coaches have switched spots. Now’s as good a time as any for the Hawkeyes’ promising linebacking corps to step up and lead a defense that failed to meet lofty expectations in 2011. Much of Iowa’s hopes for a defensive turnaround this fall rest of the development of its linebackers. The Hawkeyes return a pair of starters in juniors James Morris and Christian Kirksey, who’ll be joined by fellow junior Anthony Hitchens in what should be the strength of a defense that slipped from seventh nationally in scoring defense in 2010 to 46th a year ago.

Buck, Morrison homer in 7th, Marlins beat Cards

Sports

June 28th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) — John Buck and pinch hitter Logan Morrison connected for consecutive home runs in the seventh inning, rallying the Miami Marlins past St. Louis 5-3 Wednesday night and ending their eight-game losing streak against the Cardinals. The Cardinals had won five in a row overall. Miami won for just the second time in 10 games. Tony Cruz’s first career homer in the top of the seventh put the Cardinals ahead 3-2. Buck tied it with one out when he homered off Fernando Salas. Morrison then sent a drive off Sam Freeman (0-1) that hit the top of the right-field fence, bounced off a nearby railing and dropped back into play. After being stopped at second base while the umpires reviewed the play, Morrison was allowed to finish his home-run trot.
