Davenport race cancels practice run due to heat

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – Organizers of the popular Bix 7 running race in Davenport are canceling a training run for the second straight week because of extreme heat.  The Quad-City Times reports that Thursday’s Bix at Six training run has been called off because of forecasts that call for temperatures of close to 100 degrees.  Similar temperatures caused last week’s Bix at Six to be scrapped, which was thought to be a first in the 20 years the training runs have been held. An extra practice run has been scheduled for July 19th.  The seven-mile race through Davenport that attracts elite runners will take place July 28. It is the 38th annual Bix 7 race.

Baseball fans to watch games and fireworks.

Sports

July 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Baseball fans in Iowa will have several chances to take in a game and a fireworks show on this Independence Day holiday. The Iowa Cubs will be at home this evening against Omaha and I-Cubs general manager Sam Bernabe says the Pacific Coast League attempts to schedule every team a home game near the fourth. Bernabe says the Fourth of July always helps pack the stadium. In addition to a fireworks show, he says there will be a ceremony on the field prior to the game in which a number of fans weill officially become U-S citizens. 29 people will be sworn-in as United States citizens at around 6:50-p.m.  Bernabe says every 8th grade history student should see a swearing-in ceremony at least once, because it’s a “very impressive ceremony,” according to Bernabe.

Elsewhere: The Clinton Lumberkings will be at home against Beloit in a Midwest League contest. General manager Ted Tornow says there will be a fireworks display after the game; The Cedar Rapids Kernels host Wisconsin and general manager Doug Nelson says they are inviting fans to spend the entire day at the ballpark. It begins with a pancacke feed in the morning and the game starts at five; and, The Sioux City Explorers will host the second of two nights of fireworks after their American Association game against Gary-SouthShore. It is the 20th straight season the Explorers have been home on the fourth.

Chris Carpenter to undergo season-ending surgery

Sports

July 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a nerve issue in his shoulder that has sidelined him since spring training. The 37-year-old Carpenter wants to continue pitching. He’s been told the surgery to relieve compressed nerves in the shoulder could allow him to resume his career, although there are no guarantees. The Cardinals had been optimistic Carpenter would pitch after the All-Star break until recently. A bullpen throwing session was cancelled on Monday because strength had not returned to the shoulder, and now the team is optimistic Carpenter will be ready for spring training. General manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that recovery time is three to six months. The surgery will be performed on July 19 in Dallas.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jeff Francis worked five solid innings before the Colorado bullpen took over and Tyler Colvin hit a three-run homer as the Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Tuesday night. Matt Holliday hit his 14th homer for the Cardinals. Carlos Beltran was 0 for 3 with a walk to end a nine-game RBI streak in which he drove in 15 runs. Matt Belisle retired four in a row to end the eighth, the biggest out coming on Holliday’s groundout with two runners on. Rafael Betancourt worked out of trouble in the ninth for his 13th save in 17 chances. He had blown three of his last five save opportunities, but got Jon Jay to look at strike three with two on for the final out.
