Few high school sports cancellations so far this year

Sports

December 25th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The snowstorm at the end of last week wiped out most of the high school contests on Thursday and Friday, but overall the first half of the winter sports season hasn’t had many weather-related interruptions. Bud Legg is the spokesman for the Iowa High School Athletic Association which oversees boys’ sports. “Through Friday we’ll probably have maybe about 120 cancellations of boys’ games and probably for every boys’ game there’s probably a girls’ game that’s been cancelled, and a comparable number of wrestling events,” Legg says. He says it’s the most cancellations they’ve had in the last two years.

“You know last year we had a really, really great year. But three years ago we had over 900 cancellations for the winter, and we’re just talking just boys’ sports at that time,” Legg says. “And of those 900, we had all but about 75 or 80 of them were made up.” The cancellations lead to a lot of calendar checking by the athletic directors at each school. Legg says they have to match schedules for open dates and see if the officials are available, all while checking to be sure there are no conflicts with other school events such as music concerts and plays. The sports teams do not practice on Christmas Eve or Christmas, and then it is up to the coaches how long a break they give before starting up practice again. Legg says the association does not allow any regular games during a school’s Christmas break.

“They’ll have scrimmages…at maybe two or three schools at the same site and get in some scrimmage time. Because the school staff is on vacation, the athletic association for probably going on 30-35 years now, has determined that is not a good time to try and play games,” Legg says. The teams will return from break and begin playing games again in January.

Colts beat Chiefs 20-13 to clinch playoff berth

Sports

December 23rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Andrew Luck threw for 205 yards to break the single-season rookie record, and his touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne late in the fourth quarter Sunday gave the Indianapolis Colts a 20-13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs and a berth in the playoffs.

Luck surpassed Cam Newton’s year-old record of 4,051 yards passing by a rookie in the second quarter, and then came through in the closing minutes. He marched Indy to the Chiefs 7, and then found Wayne in the back of the end zone on third-and-goal for the go-ahead score.

It was the seventh time Luck has rallied his team to victory in the fourth quarter. Darius Butler returned an interception 32 yards for a TD in helping the Colts (10-5) join the 2008 Miami Dolphins as the only NFL teams to win at least 10 games after losing 14 or more the previous season.

Iowa faces Coppin State Saturday

Sports

December 22nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes play Coppin State today (Saturday) in Iowa City, in their final non-conference game before the Christmas break. Iowa opens the Big Ten season hosting Indiana in Iowa City on December 31st. You can hear the game on KJAN, beginning at 11-a.m.

Coach Fran McCaffery says they want to finish this portion of the schedule on a good note. “We wanna keep playing the way we’re playing, hard, solid D, sharing the ball, a lot of different guys feeling good about their game, and that’s the way you want to go into Indiana,” McCaffery said. The Hawkeyes have been shooting the ball well lately, and freshman guard Mike GeSsell says it’s a matter of being confident.

“Whether you miss your last one, missed your last five, you have to continue to shoot with confidence. We are really confident the players we have on this team can shoot the ball,” GeSsell said. He says coach McCaffery is going to continue giving them the green light to shoot, even if they miss a few shots. While they have a winning record and have been shooting the ball well, GeSsell said after the win over South Carolina State that they still have room to improve on defense.

“You know that was kind of our weakness as a team last year and we still have some breakdowns at times,” GeSsell said. He says if they can cut out the breakdowns they will improve as a team. Iowa is 10-2 heading into Saturday’s game.
