Iowa House passes bill allowing teachers, staff to obtain a permit to carry a gun on school property

DES MOINES, Iowa — [KCCI] – The Iowa House took the next step in advancing a bill that would allow teachers and school staff to obtain a professional permit to carry a gun on school property. House lawmakers passed the bill in a 61 to 36 vote Monday. The bill now heads to the governor’s desk to sign. The Iowa Senate passed the bill Wednesday.

The bill would allow teachers and other school staff to get a permit to carry a gun on school grounds. In order to get a permit, staff would have to pass background checks and attend at least five training courses. Staff at private schools, colleges and universities would also be allowed to get a permit.

Large school districts would also be required to have at least one security officer per high school. School boards would be able to vote to opt out of that requirement. If Gov. Kim Reynolds signs this bill into law, it would take effect immediately.The House already passed the bill in February. That version included a grant program to help recruit and retain school resource officers. The Senate voted to remove that portion of the plan Wednesday and sent it back to the House for review.

Legislature, by 131-13 tally, votes to regulate traffic cameras

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa Senate has sent the governor a bill to set up state regulations for traffic cameras that generate tickets for speeding. Senator Mike Klemish, of Spillville, says cities and counties will have to get a traffic camera permit from the Iowa Department of Transportation.

“The DOT may grant the permit based on if the local authority can show that a speed camera is the appropriate, necessary and least restrictive means to address the traffic hazards at the proposed location,” Klemish says. Cities and counties will have to submit information to justify the speed limit in the area where a camera is placed, along with data about the number and severity of traffic accidents in the area.

“I think we’ve set up a very robust regulatory framework…and actually require cities and municipalities to prove the concept, to prove they need to have these traffic cameras in these locations,” Klemish says. “We’ve also put in place guidelines for where they can spend their money.” The fines from traffic camera tickets must be used on law enforcement. Legislators have been debating whether to ban or regulate traffic cameras since 2011.

Senator Tony Bisignano, of Des Moines, says there’s a need for automated traffic cameras in urban areas of the state, including the Des Moines freeway where he says it’s too dangerous for police to pull speeding motorists over and issue tickets.  “Those of you in this room who drive I-235 coming to and from the Capitol, if you haven’t sensed that your life’s in jeopardy at times by people who have no regard for your safety and theirs,” Bisignano said.

Senator Lynn Evans, a Republican from Aurelia, was the only senator to vote against the bill. The House passed the bill last Tuesday on an 85-to-12 vote.

Audubon Wheelers Girls Track Season update

The Audubon Wheelers girls track and field season has got off to very good start.

Coach Alaena Christensen talked about some of the events that have contributed to the success to the Wheeelers track program this season.

Coach Christensen elaborated on what individuals have done well so far this season.

Coach Christensen said she is basically trying to get a good meet under their belt for the season

Coach Christensen talked about what the wheeler’ fan base can expect when they go out and watch the team the rest of the year.

The Wheelers next track meet will be Tuesday April 16th CAM Classic Track Meet in Atlantic. That track meet will start at 4:30 p.m

Cy-Hawk Softball Game Postponed

AMES, Iowa – Due to the severe weather forecasted for Tuesday, April 16, the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup between Iowa State and Iowa has been postponed with the hopes of finding a date later this month that is workable for both teams.

This is seventh game this season – and fifth home contest – impacted by weather for the Cyclones. Stay tuned to cyclones.com and Iowa State social channels for more information.

Iowa State will now be back in action this Thursday, when it heads to Utah for a four-game road trip. ISU’s first action will come on Thursday, April 18, when it faces off with the BYU Cougars for a three-game series. The Cyclones round out the trip this Sunday facing Utah Valley in Orem.

Martin Drafted by the Las Vegas Aces

NEW YORK – University of Iowa graduate student Kate Martin was selected by the Las Vegas Aces with 18th overall pick in the 2nd round of the WNBA Draft. Martin joins teammate Caitlin Clark in the 2024 draft class as the fifth Hawkeye to be drafted into the WNBA since 2019, following Kathleen Doyle, Megan Gustafson, Monika Czinano, and Clark.

19 Hawkeyes have been drafted or signed in the WNBA since the league originated in 1997. This marks the first time since 1998 that two Hawkeyes have been drafted in the same year.

The Edwardsville, Illinois, native stands as the first Iowa women’s basketball player to have amassed 900+ points, 500+ rebounds, 400+ assists, 120+ steals, and 60+ blocks in a career and is the third player in school history behind Clark and Sam Logic to net 1,200+ points, 700+ rebounds, and 450+ assists. Martin scored 10+ points in 30 games this season, 15+ points in 17 games, while averaging 13.1 points per game in her senior campaign.

Martin was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale USBWA National Player of the Year Watchlist and to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 21st class of “So You Want To Be A Coach” program in her final season.
