McFarland Clinic to Anchor CYTown Development

Sports

September 7th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AMES, Iowa – McFarland Clinic, Iowa’s largest physician-owned multi-specialty clinic, has agreed to become the first tenant in CYTown, Iowa State University’s multi-use district currently under construction between Jack Trice Stadium and the Iowa State Center.

“We are grateful for the leadership of the McFarland Clinic Board of Directors and Andrew Perry, CEO, for coming alongside Iowa State University to partner on this transformative project for Central Iowa,” said Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “McFarland made history as one of Iowa’s first multi-specialty clinics when it first opened its doors some 80 years ago, and we believe its support of CYTown will be equally impactful for the campus community, Ames and Central Iowa for future generations.”

McFarland Clinic is expected to break ground on an anticipated 60,000-square foot multi-level medical facility adjacent to the north entrance of Jack Trice Stadium in the summer of 2024. It will be the first building developed as part of the university’s new 40-acre multi-use district, which was publicly announced in September 2022, and saw construction start in March 2023.

“This partnership is a win-win-win for ISU, McFarland and the communities we serve. This is a convenient location within the city of Ames and helps us fulfill several strategic priorities by improving access to care and opening up additional space for recruitment of new Story County physicians,” said Perry. “We are proud to support CYTown, the university and the economic impact it will have with retail and entertainment offerings.”

McFarland Clinic at CYTown will offer primary and specialty care as well as urgent care. CYTown is conveniently located on campus for ISU faculty, staff and students and accessible by major thoroughfares for patients in and outside of Ames.

When finalized, formal agreements between McFarland Clinic and Iowa State University are subject to approval from the State of Iowa’s Board of Regents.

“The clinic will provide our student-athletes convenient access to orthopedic services including imaging equipment not currently available on campus,” Pollard added. “It will also complement our health center by providing after hours and weekend services. We are thrilled to welcome McFarland Clinic to CYTown.”

ISU President Wendy Wintersteen added, “We are pleased to partner with McFarland Clinic as the first tenant in CYTown. The new medical facility will be a shining example of the innovative approach Iowa State University is taking to enhance our athletics, arts and conference complex.”

McFarland Clinic’s outstanding reputation and the number of individuals receiving care and services in this area will help attract additional businesses to CYTown. It also helps jump-start ISU’s plans to reimagine the Iowa State Center.

“Similar to Dr. (James H.) Hilton’s vision for the Iowa State Center that has impacted the Iowa State and Ames communities for more than 50 years, we believe CYTown will have a similar impact for future generations,” Pollard said.

The university plans to use the revenues generated from CYTown to fund long-needed refurbishments to C.Y. Stephens Auditorium, Fisher Theater, Scheman Building, James H. Hilton Coliseum and the surrounding parking lots. The university also anticipates adding a convention center and hotel that will be accessible for use by the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau to attract additional conventions and trade shows that will provide year-round benefits to local hotels, restaurants and the City of Ames.

“McFarland has a great history of leadership and selecting locations that play a pivotal role in our community” said Rick Sanders, ISU Research Park President. “Their physician owners invested in our research park at a crucial time in our development and likewise are taking a leadership position in CYTown. We look forward to working with them on integrating the McFarland experience into our Iowa State ecosystem.”

Businesses interested in learning more about opportunities to secure space in CYTown may contact Cushman & Wakefield’s Christopher Stafford by phone (515) 309-4002 or e-mail (cstafford@iowaca.com).

Leading the Cyclones

Iowa State scored two goals last Sunday against UCSB, marking the second time this season ISU has scored 2+ goals.

Five different Cyclones (Salomé Prat, Abigail Miller, Mira Emma, Kristin Boos and Lauren Hernandez) have goals to their names on the season. Emma leads the team in shots with 12 and she, along with Prat and Miller, has two goals on the year.

Both Emma and Prat have seven shots on goal to lead the team. Emma leads the team in points with two goals and an assist. Four other Cyclones are tied with Emma for most assists on the team with one.

Goalkeeper Avery Gillahan is the lone Cyclone to have played all 540 possible minutes this season, with Chloe Broughton having played just two minutes less at 538.

Scouting Portland State

After starting the season 0-3, Portland State picked up its first win of the season in its last outing on August 27.

Five different Vikings have found the back of the net on the season, with Abi Hoffman leading the way with two goals scored. Just two Portland State players have assists while, Hoffman (13) and teammate Elle Frazier (10) lead the team in shots.

Portland State has used two different keepers so far this season, with Natalie Cunningham starting in three of the four competitions. Cunningham has 13 saves and a clean sheet to her name on the year.

From the Notebook

  • The Cyclones have lost just one match under Coach Fannon when scoring at least two goals. Two seems to be the magic number for the offense.
  • Arkansas State transfer Abigail Miller has already surpassed her 2022 point total in Jonesboro, tallying four points through four games of action (she had three points with ASU in 2022).
  • Mira Emma, Salomé Prat and Abigail Miller each have multiple goals on the season. That matches the total number of players who had multiple goals in 2022 for the Cyclones.
  • Iowa State leads the Big 12 in shot accuracy, placing 62.7% of its attempts on goal. That’s good enough for the 10th-highest ranking in the country.
  • Three Big 12 programs are ranked in the Coaches Poll this week, as BYU is No. 1 in the country, Texas is 17th and TCU returned to the poll, checking in at 25.
  • Mira Emma recorded her 11th career assist in the season-opener, pushing her into the ISU top 10 all-time. Emma also moved into a tie for most goals in a Cyclone uniform, scoring her 13th against UCSB.
  • After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities.
    • Gillahan earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors on August 23rd for her performances during the first week of the season.

Series History

Iowa State and Portland State will be meeting for the first time ever on Thursday and it will be ISU’s first trip to play soccer in the state of Oregon. The only other Oregon-based D1 program ISU has played is Portland, who the Cyclones met in Lincoln, Neb., in 2005.

Up Next
Iowa State will return from its trip out east to host the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday, September 10, in the non-conference finale. The game against Kentucky is also ISU’s Senior Day where eight Cyclones will be honored. The Cyclones and Wildcats will get underway at 1 p.m. and the action will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

Iowa Falls to Iowa State

Sports

September 7th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

CORALVILLE, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball fell in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series to Iowa State, 3-2, Wednesday evening inside Xtreme Arena.

Fifth year Caitlin Buettner led the way for the Hawkeyes with a season-best 23 kills and a hitting percentage of .345. Senior Delaney McSweeney posted 14 kills, and Anna Davis hit at a clip of .438. Senior setter Bailey Ortega registered 27 assists, and freshman setter Kaia Mateo followed closely behind with 24. Libero Sydney Dennis recorded a team-high 18 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Iowa, 26-24): Iowa State started the match with the first point, but the Hawkeyes were quick to respond with a kill by Buettner, assisted by Ortega. Iowa continued the momentum and brought the score to 5-2. After a series of kills by Iowa State, the Hawkeye duo, Ortega and Buettner, added another point to the board. The Hawkeyes took a timeout, and came back determined with a kill and an ace. Iowa tied the set at 12, and forced the Cyclones into a timeout. The two teams battled back and forth, tying five more times, until Iowa pulled ahead with a solid kill by freshman Gabby Deery from the back row. The score stayed tight, tying at 23, after a diving dig by junior Amanda Darling, setting McSweeney up for a kill. Iowa State had the chance to end it at 23-24, but McSweeney kept the game in play. A long rally into a Hawkeye kill led Iowa State into another timeout. Iowa State attempted to stay in the game, but were shut down at the net by Buettner, McSweeney, and Deery to close out the set.

SET 2 (Iowa, 25-17): The Hawkeyes continued the momentum and took the first two points. Iowa State stopped the Iowa lead early, but the Hawkeyes did not let them get far. A kill by Anna Davis tied the set at four. Then, Darling assisted Buettner for Iowa to take the lead. At the net, McSweeney and Nataly Moravec shut down Iowa State with a block. A series of errors between the two teams led to another tie at 10. After a Buettner kill and a solo block by McSweeney, Iowa pulled ahead by two, 13-11. The set remained close, and the two teams fought to pull away, but the Hawkeyes took advantage of an Iowa State error, and forced the Cyclones to take a timeout. Four consecutive points by Iowa expanded their lead to 21-15. An impressive dig by Darling kept the ball alive for Iowa to stretch the spread to seven. Iowa State gave up a point to an error, and the Hawkeyes clinched the set.

SET 3 (Iowa State, 26-24): Iowa opened the set with a block by McSweeney and junior Michelle Urquhart on the right side. After a Cyclone timeout, Ortega and Buettner teamed up for a kill that left Iowa State unable to rally. The spread stayed close throughout the beginning of the set, until the teams tied at 10. Mateo found an open spot on the floor for a dump to keep the Hawkeyes alive. Dennis saved the ball in the back row, setting McSweeney up for an outside kill. Yet again, Ortega and Buettner paired up for an unstoppable approach, tying the set. An Iowa State block attempt that headed out of bounds gave Iowa the lead, 17-16. A couple of Cyclone kills led Iowa to take a timeout. Iowa quickly recovered the spread, taking back the lead, 21-20, after an ace by Kaia Mateo. Iowa fought to close but fell short.

SET 4 (Iowa State, 25-18): The set was tight right off the bat with kills by both teams. A long rally into a Buettner kill gave Iowa the lead, 5-3. McSweeney and Moravec went to work in the front. They each posted a kill and came together for a block. Iowa put up a fight, but Iowa State maintained a small lead. The Hawkeyes shortened the spread to two after back-to-back kills by Davis and Buettner. Davis, Moravec and McSweeney recorded kills to add points to the board for Iowa, but Iowa State broke through again, taking the set.

SET 5 (Iowa State, 15-9): Both teams exchanged kills to start the final set, tying at two. Iowa State pulled ahead, but Moravec added a kill for Iowa to earn the ball back. McSweeney laid two to the ground to lessen the spread to six. Moravec, once again, earned the ball back for Iowa with a kill assisted by Dennis. An Iowa State error put the Hawkeyes down by four. Iowa attempted to recover, but fell short and the Cyclones took the set and match.

HEAR FROM CAITLAN BUETTNER

“It’s a big honor to play in this game. We want the Hawkeyes to make a big presence, and we want to represent our school just as well as they represent (Iowa State). To play in this match, you have to keep your head on straight, and you have to lead by example. I feel like if everyone does that, then things will start going our way. We are a very skilled team; we have new skillsets and new players. I think we have to take that and run with it, and learn from all the good things that we’ve been doing in these matches, rather than focusing on the negative.”

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes return to Xtream Arena on Friday, Sept. 8 for the Hawkeye Invitational, facing Central Michigan for Junior Hawk Club Day. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT) on B1G+.

McClear Defends ANF Fall Classic Title

Sports

September 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

RIVERSIDE, Iowa – The University of Iowa men’s golf team placed second at the ANF Fall Classic on Wednesday. Fifth year senior Mac McClear won the tournament for the second year in a row after shooting a 67 (-5) in the final round of the tournament. McClear played the final two rounds of the tourney at 10-under par.

Despite the chilly morning at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course, McClear carried his momentum from the second round over into the final round. McClear birdied eight of nine holes including making six birdies in a row. McClear opened his final round with a birdie putt to cut his deficit to two strokes. McClear took the outright lead on hole 15 and never looked back. McClear has now won six tournaments as a Hawkeye and tied a school record. (Lonnie Nelson, 1976)

At the turn of the final round, the Hawkeyes had four golfers ranked in the top-25 of the standings. McClear was in a tie for first at 11-under par, Noah Kent was in a tie for 12th at even par, Hogan Hansen was in a tied for 17th at 2-over par, and Josh Lundmark was tied for 19th at 3-over par.

Lundmark, Ian Meyer, and Max Tjoa tied for 34th place with a 225 (+9). All three competed individually.

Cale Leonard also competed individually. Leonard finished tied for 25th after carding a 73 (+1) today.

Felipe Pedraza withdrew from the tournament after the second round.

Iowa’s Joe Evans prepares for his return to Ames

Sports

September 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Ames native Joe Evans is looking forward to his final game in Jack Trice Stadium. The former Ames High School quarterback began his career at Iowa as a walk-on and now as a senior defensive end he is one of the captains. As an Ames native he has a unique perspective.

Evans talks about his last trip to Ames in 2021.

Iowa State’s Caleb Bacon takes advantage of his opportunity

Sports

September 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State linebacker Caleb Bacon had a breakout game against Northern Iowa. The walk-on from Lake Mills had five tackles and two sacks in a 30-9 win over the Panthers.

Saturday Bacon and his Cyclone teammates will try to beat Iowa for the second straight season.

Northern Iowa’s Sam Schnee talks improvement on offense

Sports

September 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

U-N-I wide receiver Sam Schnee says the offense had a disappointing performance against Iowa State and they want to turn that around at home against ninth ranked Weber State. The Redshirt senior from Dubuque had four catches for 34 yards in a 30-9 loss at Iowa State.

Quarterback Theo Day was a part of the offensive woes, and Schnee believes he will bounce back.

Drake’s Todd Stepsis previews Northwestern College

Sports

September 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Drake coach Todd Stepsis says the Bulldogs hope to bounce back from a dissapointing effort Saturday night when they host defending NAIA champion Northwestern College. Drake opened with a 55-7 loss at 15th ranked North Dakota. After trailing 14-0 at halftime the game unraveled in the second half.

North Dakota piled up 652 yards of offense in that game, including 288 on the ground.

Defending national camp Northwestern is top ranked in the NAIA Poll and opened the season with a 48-35 win over Concordia of Nebraska.

Stepsis says the Drake offense will need to keep pace.

Stepsis says the Red Raiders are highly skilled on offense.

Iowa’s Cade McNamara previews Iowa State

Sports

September 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara will get his first taste of the Cy-Hawk series when the Hawkeyes visit Iowa State in their 70th meeting. Two years ago, McNamara was the starting quarterback for Michigan when the Wolverines played Michigan State.

McNamara says in-state games include added emotion.

McNamara was limited by a quad strain in a season opening win over Utah State and feels it is making progress.

The injury has limited McNamra’s mobility in the pocket.

Iowa needs to find a way to solve Iowa State’s 3-3-5 defense that has smothered the run game the past couple of years. The Hawkeyes have only averaged 62 and-a-half yards on the ground in the last two meetings and the run game did not look promising against Utah State.
