ST. LOUIS (AP) – Adam Wainwright’s first two RBIs of the season helped knock out Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the sixth inning in a game that began in 103-degree heat as the St. Louis Cardinals ended Los Angeles’ five-game winning streak with an 8-2 victory on Tuesday night. Wainwright (8-10) allowed two runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings.
He was batting .079 (3-for-38) with three singles and 17 strikeouts coming in. Wainwright doubled to left-center with two outs in the fifth for St. Louis’ first run, then scored the tying run on Rafael Furcal’s single. After Daniel Descalso was intentionally walked to load the bases in the sixth, Wainwright walked on five pitches to give the Cardinals a two-run lead in a six-run sixth that put them up 8-2. Kershaw (7-6) gave up eight runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings, the second-most runs ever allowed by the 2011 NL Cy Young winner.

At the Boy’s State Baseball Tournament Tuesday, in Des Moines, Western Dubuque teed off on Harlan pitching in Class 3-A, to move on to the next round with a 12-1 victory in five innings. Nick Tuttle tossed 2.2 innings of one-run ball to pick up the win and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI at the plate. Harlan was held to just two hits on the day, while the Bobcats knocked 14. Ben Bruck started for the Cyclones, but did not escape the first inning and suffered the loss. Ben Bruck led off the game with a walk and then advanced to second on a stolen base before taking third on a throwing error by the catcher.
Jake Paeges took the second walk of the inning to put runners on the corners with one down. Ludwig erased Paeges with a perfect throw to gun him down on a stolen base attempt. Zach Osborn followed with his 26th RBI of the season to plate the Cyclones’ first run. Western Dubuque took no time to battle back, scoring seven runs on eight singles in the first and sending 12 batters to the plate. Nick Tuttle helped his own cause in the bottom of the inning, ripping a one out single to left and moving to third on a Ryan Lehmann single to center.
Tyson Massey reached base on a fielder’s choice, but Ben Bruck’s throw sailed into right, allowing Tuttle to score and keeping runners at the corners. Massey swiped second and then Hunter Westhoff broke the tie with a two-run single to left. Cody Kramer looped and RBI single to right to score the Bobcats’ fourth run of the inning and chase Josh Bruck out of the game. With two down and runners on the corners, Zach Osborn took the hill and allowed Adam Hoeger to score on Brendan McCoy’s infield single. Logan Pitz and Nick Tuttle followed with back-to-back singles in their second at-bats in the inning to plate two more runs.
The Bobcats added two more in the second on three straight singles by Massey, Westhoff, and Cody Reimer to start the frame. Massey then knocked the Bobcats first extra base hit with a gapper in the third to score Lehmann from first to extend their lead to 10-1. Hoeger took a one out walk in the fourth and swiped second, then scored on a throwing error by Bruck at short. Logan Pitz plated Cody Kramer to give Western Dubuque a 12-1 advantage. The Western Dubuque Bobcats will face off against the DCG Mustangs in the next round. First pitch for the semi-finals is set for noon on Friday at Principal Park.
A Harlan Community School teacher is taking a leave of absence to pursue the NFL. Dan Hoch, who was recently hired by the School District for High School Social Studies, requested the leave of absence after being contacted for a tryout with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The leave of absence is until September 1st, 2012. Hoch spoke with High School Principal John Connell and said he has about a 10 percent chance of making the team.During the school board meeting Monday, the board approved the leave of absence and placed Brian James as the substitute teacher for Hoch. The leave of absence had to be approved by the union, administration and board.

A central Iowa man who has appeared in more state high school baseball tournaments than anyone else stepped off the diamond for the final time Monday. Gary Paulsen of Ogden umpired his last game during a record 40th appearance at the State Baseball Tournament.

He’s been calling balls and strikes for more than five decades. Paulsen called his first game as a junior in high school, joining his father and uncle on the diamond. “I was fortunate to work in the 50s and 60s with my dad and my uncle, in the 80s and 90s with my son and then, in the summer, I broke down and trained my grandson. So, that’s four generations of stupidity or whatever you want to call it,” Paulsen said with a laugh. “It’s been fun and I’ve actually been (umpiring) since probably 1957.” In addition to his family, Paulsen credits his long, successful career to good health and a lot of luck. “My mother’s dad lived to be 94 and he was an active runner, so I think I have some of those genes in me,” Paulsen said. “I’ve been fortunate, other than one year I developed a blood clot during football season, otherwise I’ve been very fortunate to stay healthy.” Paulsen is also an accomplished basketball, track and football official.
He was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in 1993.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chad Billingsley returned from the 15-day disabled list with a strong outing that ended a five-start losing streak and Luis Cruz hit a three-run homer as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 Monday night for their fifth straight victory. Cruz, recalled July 2 to replaced injured shortstop Dee Gordon, has two career homers and 12 RBIs. Eight of his 14 hits are for extra bases. His three-run shot in the second barely cleared the left-field wall — the ball conked left fielder Matt Holliday on the rebound — to give the Dodgers the early jump in their eighth straight win over St. Louis dating to April 17, 2011. Kenley Jansen struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 19th save in 24 chances. The Dodgers also won eight in a row against St. Louis from 1975-76, their best streak in the series since moving to Los Angeles.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have signed first-round draft pick Riley Reiff. The team did not announce terms of the deal. Reiff, an offensive tackle at Iowa, said Monday he was happy to have the contract done. The Lions took Reiff with the 23rd pick in the draft. He will join an explosive offense led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson, but the Lions weren’t consistently effective running the ball last season. Reiff was the only offensive lineman they drafted.
