Sports

July 31st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The biggest crowd of the season will be on hand Saturday night at the Iowa Speedway when the NASCAR Nationwide Series makes its second stop of the season with the running of the U-S Cellular 250. Iowa Speedway CEO Doug Fritz says tickets for the event are going fast. He encourages fan to log on to www.iowaspeeedway.com or call 1-866-RUSTYGO to order tickets and get more information. Fritz says they will try to accommodate as many fans as possible, by installing some temporary seating. Saturday night’s race will be carried by ESPN2. Fritz says the network does a great job of promoting the event and Iowa, its business and culture. The racing action begins Friday night with a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race.

Chiefs hoping Poe gamble pays off

Sports

July 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – If Dontari Poe bombs out, general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel could wind up wearing the biggest dunce caps in Kansas City. The Chiefs spent the overall No. 11 draft pick on an unproven kid who was merely second-team all-league in Conference USA. If the hulking nose tackle rises to stardom, however, the Chiefs could have their finest defense since Marty Schottenheimer’s brawny squads of the mid-1990s. Poe and his new bosses are in the spotlight as the Chiefs begin their first full week of training camp.

Iowa RB Johnson suspended after 2 police run-ins

Sports

July 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa running back De’Andre Johnson has been suspended after two run-ins with police in the past week. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said Sunday that he suspended Johnson from all team activities after learning about the sophomore’s latest encounter with police. Johnson was ticketed for speeding and eluding arrest on Saturday. A University Heights police report says Johnson drove his motorcycle 60 mph in a 25 mph zone and didn’t immediately pull over. Two days earlier, Johnson was ticketed by Iowa City police for maintaining a disorderly house after neighbors complained of a loud party at his house. Ferentz did not say how long Johnson’s suspension might last.
