Cyclones return from break to face No. 6 Kansas

Sports

January 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – It’s been easy to forget that Iowa State still has most of its season left.     Thanks to final exams, the holidays and a quirk in the Big 12 schedule that gave Iowa State a bye week right away, the Cyclones have played just once in 21 days – and that was on New Year’s Day against Yale.

The Cyclones (10-3) have lost to the teams they were expected to lose to – No. 21 Cincinnati, No. 24 UNLV and Iowa on the road – while beating everyone they were supposed to beat. But Iowa State also looked sluggish at times against weaker competition like Florida-Gulf Coast, Missouri-Kansas City and Yale.

The Cyclones have gotten away with it so far. But they won’t when league plays starts Wednesday night at No. 6 Kansas (12-1).

Iowa’s pheasant numbers have fallen far over the years

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

January 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A new report finds the size of Iowa’s pheasant population has fallen 83-percent since the mid-1990s due to disappearing habitat and a series of harsh winters. Kevin Baskins, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says habitat loss alone would have meant only a 26-percent drop in pheasant numbers. “You kind of have an exponential effect when you have declining habitat combined with harsh winters because they have no cover to escape the conditions they’re facing,” Baskins says. “We’ve had several winters in a row with above-average snowfall.”

A milder winter a year ago, combined with the summer-long drought, helped the pheasant population somewhat. Baskins says the habitat loss combined with several severe winters is making it harder for pheasant chicks to survive. “The other big influence we have weatherwise is when we get into colder and wetter springs,” he says. “The chicks, when they’re hatching, if they’re exposed to those conditions, they succumb to the elements. They don’t have as high a survival rates when we get into the colder and wetter conditions after first hatching.”

Baskins says Iowa lost more than a million acres of habitat between 1996 and 2010. He says higher corn prices prompted many farmers to plow up land that normally would serve as habitat for the birds. Bob-white quail numbers are also in decline. The numbers come from the DNR’s 2013 report on the pheasant population.

Chiefs introduce Andy Reid as new head coach

Sports

January 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid has been introduced as the new coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, one week after he was fired following 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Reid was joined by Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt and several other team officials at a packed news conference at Arrowhead Stadium. Reid takes over for Romeo Crennel, who joined Reid and five other NFL coaches in losing their jobs last Monday.

Reid took the Eagles to the Super Bowl and won 130 games over his career. But things had soured the past couple seasons and he was dismissed after going 4-12. He takes over a team that went 2-14, matching the worst finish in Chiefs history. That means the Chiefs pick first in the NFL draft for the first time.
