ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals traded infielder Tyler Greene to the Houston Astros on Thursday for a player-to-be-named later or cash considerations. Greene batted .218 with four home runs and 19 RBI in 77 games. The Cards played with 24 players on their roster for Thursday’s game against San Francisco. Greene made an error at second base on Wednesday that led to two runs for the Giants, who had a five-run sixth inning en route to a 15-0 win.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Three key members of the Kansas City Chiefs will see their first action Friday night since undergoing season-ending knee surgery almost a year ago. Running back Jamaal Charles, tight end Tony Moeaki and safety Eric Berry will all play in KC’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals, coming off a loss to New Orleans in the Hall of Fame Game, will get another look at the two men battling to be their starting quarterback. John Skelton is expected to start with Kevin Kolb coming off the bench later. Kolb started against the Saints but was intercepted on his first pass and then went out with a chest bruise.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched seven strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals bounced back from a blowout, beating the San Francisco Giants 3-1 Thursday. Carlos Beltran hit his 27th homer as the Cardinals, trounced by the Giants 15-0 the previous night. St. Louis has won seven of its last 10. Wainwright (10-10) allowed one run and five hits, striking out seven and walking three. He has given up two earned runs or fewer in his last five starts. Jason Motte pitched the ninth for his 25th save in 29 chances. Beltran, who leads the NL with 80 RBIs, hit a two-run homer off Madison Bumgarner (12-7) in the first inning.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The University of Kansas Hospital has become the official health care provider of the Kansas City Chiefs and will have its name on the team’s training facility near Arrowhead Stadium. The 10-year partnership was announced Thursday. The hospital is located just over the state line in Kansas City, Kan. Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt says the hospital will open a sports medicine clinic at the training facility, which will be renamed the University of Kansas Hospital Training Complex. The clinic is expected to open next summer. Hospital president and CEO Bob Page said it will serve Chiefs players, staff and families, along with anyone in the community with a sports injury. The hospital already has relationships with the Kansas City Royals, Kansas Speedway and the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City, Mo.
The 4th Annual T-Fred Memorial Golf Tournament, set for Saturday, is drawing near and organizers are inviting the public to attend. Melanie Petty with the Trevor Frederickson Foundation, says there’s a lot going on that day, and the event “Is definitely not just for golfers.”
A silent auction to be held in the Nishna Hills Club House will be set up by approximately 8 a.m. Saturday, with the tournament set to start at 9-a.m. The auction will end after the last score card is turned in, and organizers say an announcement will be made to let individuals know when the auction is officially closed. Bidders do not have to be present to win, and individuals have the opportunity to call or text Caryn Just at 254-0989 to place a bid or check on an item, even those out playing in the tournament. Just a few of the 40-plus items up for auction include a Yeti cooler, an Echo gas powered blower, a grilling basket, a Derrick Johnson autographed Kansas City Chiefs wall hanging, tickets to Iowa and Iowa State football games, a Weber charcoal grill, a quilt, a Coach purse, and a Craftsman tool chest.
In addition to the auction, a 50/50 raffle will also be held throughout the day. Tickets are $1 each or 6/$5 with the drawing held after the last score card is turned in. Tickets will be available on the course and in the club house. The person whose name is drawn must be present to win.
New to the event this year will be a beer sampling hosted by Doll Distributing. Current plans are to start the sampling at around 10:30-a.m. Also new this year will be County Artist and Atlantic native, Randy Burk, who will be performing live on the back patio from 4-6 p.m. Petty says while the silent auction, 50/50 raffle, free will donation lunch, beer sampling and live entertainment are open to the public, organizers have some things lined up for just the golfers too. Prizes will be awarded on every hole and for the top three places in four flights, bets can be placed on the betting hole, and a 2012 Chevy Cruze is ready to go home with anyone making Deter Motor Company’s Hole in One.
The T-Fred Memorial Golf Tournament is the only fundraiser for the Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund which was formed to give back to the projects and organizations Trevor loved. Photos recapping the over $42,000 in donations given to date will be on display in the Nishna Hills club house.
New University of Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis says the offense will be a little different this year, but he says most of the change will be picking up a new way of identifying plays. Davis says one of the biggest challenge is they were only able to lay the foundation of the offense in the spring, and now this fall they are adding some bells and whistles, “so it’s a constant learning process.” Davis who previously coached at Texas gave the media a verbal example of what the players are dealing with. “The terminology is entirely different, you know the way things are called and being able to enunciate the plays, you know: R-King-n-scat-four-seven-fake-zero-fair-flat, and not bat an eye,” Davis said after reeling off a play call. “It just takes awhile and you’ve got to do it over and over and you’ve got to do it in a way they understand, just like y’all did I’m sure, what I was talking about.” Davis will have senior quarterback James Vandenberg making the calls at the line, something he said will be a big help.
“He brings what you want out of the quarterback position, he’s very confident guy, he’s a good leader,” Davis explains. “Our quarterbacks make a lot of decisions at the line of scrimmage and when you’re letting them do that within certain parameters, you want to know that they are spending the time that they are going to get you in the play you want. I have total confidence in James.” Davis was asked to compare Iowa’s program to Texas. He said the biggest similarity is the stability, with Kirk Ferentz being the coach for 14 years and having a great idea of what he wants to do. Davis wants to run the ball, but he said he wants to do what it takes to move the ball. “Just try to adjust, but at the same time, always trying to find some kind of balance between the run and the throw. The thing I told the offense is that balance doesn’t mean that each game you run 40 and you throw 40, it means that you can win the game either way. You get a bad weather game are you going to be good enough to run the ball. If fall behind are you going to be good enough to throw the ball more, play out of the gun more, that’s what balance means,” according to Davis. Davis says he won’t have a problem with Iowa’s young running backs as he says that’s one position where you can be younger and still do well.
The coach of gold medal winning gymnast Gabby Douglas was greeted by dozens of his friends, family and students upon his arrival back in Iowa Wednesday. It’s the second time Liang Chow has returned to Iowa after one of his athletes claimed Olympic gold.

He was surprised with the reception at the Des Moines Airport. “This is just a wonderful, warm feeling to be back home,” Chow said. Over the past two years, Chow worked with Douglas – who won team gold and the individual all-around gold medal. Chow said the experience this year in London was much different than four years ago in Beijing. Shawn Johnson was expected to do well in 2008 after dominating world gymnastics competitions the previous three years.
“Gabby was in a different situation because nobody expected much out of her, other than the ones who really know her and knew she had the potential to be on the very top,” Chow said. After claiming her two gold medals, Douglas made major mistakes on the uneven bars and the beam – and failed to medal in those events. Chow said although his time in London was rewarding, it wasn’t always enjoyable. “The experience (involved) lots of challenges and lots of struggles. Now, when I think back, it was fun…sort of,” Chow said with a laugh. “I’m just glad everything turned out good.”
The best young gymnasts from around the world will now be knocking on Chow’s door and he could relocate his gym anywhere, but Chow doesn’t plan to leave Iowa. “I feel like I can’t find a better place to live,” Chow said. “This is my dream home.” Chow moved to the U.S. from China in 1991. He and his wife opened the gym in West Des Moines in 1998.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Marco Scutaro hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high seven runs, leading Ryan Vogelsong and the San Francisco Giants to a 15-0 romp over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Scutaro doubled, singled and then hit his third career slam, connecting in the ninth off Mitchell Boggs. Ahead 2-0, the Giants broke it open with five runs in the sixth. They turned the game into a rout with four runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth. Vogelsong (10-5) gave up three hits in seven innings. He has gone at least six innings in all 21 of his starts, the longest such streak for a Giants pitcher since Bill Swift did it 24 straight times in 1993.
