ST. LOUIS (AP) — Left-hander Jaime Garcia will return to the St. Louis Cardinals’ rotation Sunday, and the team will shift impressive rookie fill-in Joe Kelly to the bullpen. Catcher Yadier Molina was out of the lineup Wednesday night with mid-back tightness, and thought he might be out two or three days, but figures to be ready for Garcia’s first start since June 5. Garcia was shut down for a month with a shoulder strain and made his fourth rehab start Tuesday night, striking out eight and walking three in five innings for Triple-A Memphis. Garcia won 13 games his first two seasons in 2010 and 2011 but is just 3-4 with a 4.48 ERA in 11 starts this season. Kelly pitched into the seventh inning Tuesday night in a victory over Arizona and is 3-5 with a 3.41 ERA in 12 starts.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright allowed two runs in six innings and the St. Louis Cardinals got home runs from David Freese and Allen Craig in a 5-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. Rafael Furcal’s two-run triple in the sixth gave the Cards a three-run lead. St. Louis homered twice for the second straight game and will go for a sweep of the three-game series behind 12-game winner Kyle Lohse on Thursday night. The Cardinals are 5-0 against the Diamondbacks this year and have won seven straight dating to last year. Wainwright (11-10) was 0-3 in April before starting to regain his form. He’s 4-0 with a 2.04 ERA in his past five starts. Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt hit a homer estimated at 456 feet, longest by an opposing player at seven-year-old Busch Stadium, in the fourth.
The Atlantic School Board Tuesday, gave its blessing for Atlantic Municipal Utilities to paint the school’s logo on a water tower located off of Bryn Mawr Drive. A local, private group of individuals is raising money for the effort.

Before AMU can arrange to have the Trojan head logo painted on the tower, they wanted to have the district’s blessing. Assistant High School Principal/Activities Director Josh Rasmussen said the group leading the effort to have the logo painted on the tower, has raised about two-thirds of the funds necessary to cover the cost. Superintendent Dr. Michael Amstein said he was somewhat surprised when he first came to town to see the logo wasn’t on a water tower, as many communities he’s been to have taken the step to show pride in their local teams. He said he knows Atlantic is firmly behind the school, and is pleased the group of private citizens have stepped forward to show support for Trojan/Trojann sports.
The St. Louis Cardinals have put relief pitcher Brian Fuentes on the restricted list after the left-hander told the team he needed time off due to personal reasons. The 37-year-old Fuentes signed as a minor league free agent last month and has appeared in six games, totaling five innings. The four-time All-Star closer had been released by Oakland, which is paying the majority of his $5 million salary. St. Louis was responsible for only a prorated share of the $480,000 minimum. St. Louis had been counting on Fuentes providing a veteran arm, considering him a trade deadline pickup. The Cards have two lefties remaining in the bullpen, both struggling. Marc Rzepczynski was 1-3 with a 5.02 ERA and rookie Barret Browning has taken the loss two of the past three games.

LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Joe Kelly pitched into the seventh inning of what could be his final start before Jaime Garcia comes off the disabled list, and the St. Louis Cardinals got home runs from Matt Holliday and Jon Jay in an 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. Miguel Montero hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who have lost four of six to drop to .500. They are 0-4 against the Cardinals this season. Ian Kennedy (10-10) made throwing errors on consecutive plays to help the Cardinals score two unearned runs in the seventh for a three-run cushion, and gave up both homers for a four-game total of eight long balls. Kelly (3-5) gave up two runs in 6 1-3 innings and matched his career best with six strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 3.41 — trailing only Kyle Lohse’s 2.72 in the rotation.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Paul Rhoads and Iowa State are thrilled to have each other.
The Cyclones have blossomed in his three seasons as coach and he got a 10-year, $20 million contract in the offseason.
Now comes the hard part.
Iowa State has gone 18-20 under Rhoads, with a pair of bowl trips and a program-defining upset of then-No. 2 Oklahoma State last November.
The Cyclones enter the 2012 season optimistic that they’re poised to take another step forward in their seemingly never-ending quest to become a serious threat in the Big 12. They open the season Sept. 1 against Tulsa.
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones, who advanced to their second NCAA Elite Eight in two years last season, open the 2012 season ranked 10th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll, released Monday.
The Cyclones have begun the year ranked in the top-10 once before, ranked ninth at the beginning of the 2010 season.
In 2011, Iowa State finished eighth on the year after falling to Florida State in the NCAA Regional Final match, the second-highest year-end ranking in program history. The squad broke a school record in RPI, rising as high as second and ending the year third in the nation.
This season looks to be another challenging season on the court for head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch and the young Cyclones, who count seven true freshmen among 16 team members. The Cyclones will being the year against 2011 NCAA tournament teams Cincinnati, Florida State (No. 12 preseason) and Tennessee (No. 15) before traveling to 2011 NCAA Championship finalist Illinois for two matches. The Illini enter the year ranked seventh.
Texas leads the Big 12 in the preseason poll, ranked second and Kansas State rounds out the conference rankings at No. 22. Oklahoma received votes in the poll.
On Saturday, Iowa State hosts its annual Cardinal and Gold scrimmage at Hilton Coliseum at 1 p.m. CST. The regular season begins Aug. 24 against the Bearcats at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Hy-Vee grocery chain is planning to honor athletes with Iowa ties who competed for the United States in the London Olympics. The event will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Drake University’s Knapp Center in Des Moines. Hy-Vee says in a news release that confirmed participants include Gabby Douglas, who won two gold medals in gymnastics; her coach Liang Chow; runner Lisa Uhl; and Miranda Leek, who competed in archery. Gymnast Shawn Johnson also will attend the event. Doors will open for the free event at 10 a.m.
