CINCINNATI (AP) – The Chicago Cubs have recalled left-hander Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa to pitch the second game of their day-night doubleheader against the Reds. The 24-year-old Raley was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA for Chicago in his first two career starts after being called up from Iowa on Aug. 7. He was optioned to Iowa on Monday after losing 3-0 to Cincinnati in Chicago on Sunday.
The Cubs weren’t required to send anybody out to make room for Raley. Baseball’s rules allow teams to add a 26th player to their active roster for doubleheaders such as Saturday’s, which was scheduled after a May 1 postponement.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa is weighing future bids for Olympic trials after turning a $300,000 profit by hosting the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials this year. The Iowa City Press-Citizen says the success of the event has organizers looking ahead to the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro. Associate athletics director Rick Klatt says the wrestling trials attracted over 14,000 fans and shattered the trials’ previous attendance records. The newspaper says the university spent $690,000 to host to the two-day event in April, including $300,000 to secure the rights. Iowa pulled in $994,000 in income. The surplus will be used to pay for a 7-foot bronze statue of former Hawkeye wrestling coach Dan Gable and upgrades to the wrestling program’s facilities.
Clayton Plowman scored three second half touchdowns to lead Adair-Casey to a season-opening 52-26 win over rival CAM in a non-district 8-man football game Friday night in Anita. Plowman carried the ball 36 times for 238 yards in leading a potent ground attack. Adair-Casey jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on a Gunnar Dinkla to Jordan Wheatley 44 yard touchdown pass and a Traeton Jensen three yard TD run. But the Cougars rallied to to take an 18-17 halftime edge. CAM’s Dylan Amdor scored on touchdown runs of 65, 37 and two yards. He also caught a 62 yard pass from quarterback Trevor McKee to set up the last scored to send them into the locker room with the lead. But the second half was a different story. Lead by an aggressive defense, the Bombers allowed only a fourth quarter touchdown run of 31 yards by McKee on a broken play. Meanwhile Adair-Casey got those three TD runs from Plowman to go with two more touchdown scampers of 61 and 32 yards from Jensen. Emmitt Wheatley also drilled a 45 yard field goal for Adair-Casey in the first half. For the Cougars, Amdor carried 24 times for 147 yards. McKee was eight of 20 for 124 yards passing for CAM. QB Gunnar Dinkla connected on four of six for 101 yards, one TD and one interception.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Todd Frazier hit a two-run home run, Ryan Ludwick and Jay Bruce added solo shots, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Even with a Cy Young contender on the mound, the Chicago White Sox have dropped another game to their American League Central nemesis, the Kansas City Royals. Salvador Perez broke the tie with a two-run double. Luis Mendoza outdueled Chris Sale, whose record dropped to 14-4.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals second baseman Chris Getz is out for the season after an injury he sustained against his former team. Getz broke his left thumb last night during a bunt attempt against the Chicago White Sox. The Royals recalled second baseman Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha, where he was hitting .323 with 10 home runs.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs finally have their top receiver under contract after Dwayne Bowe signed his franchise tender. He’ll make about $9.5 million this year after the two sides failed to reach a long-term deal. It’s not known whether Bowe will attend the team’s preseason game against the St. Louis Rams today.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — James McDonald halted a string of ineffective starts with six innings of two-hit ball, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 Friday night in a matchup of NL Central playoff contenders. Andrew McCutchen singled and scored on a passed ball in a two-run fourth for the Pirates, who also scored on a wild pitch that inning. Pittsburgh totaled 41 runs during its first six games in St. Louis this season. McDonald (11-5) was 0-2 in his previous four outings while allowing 20 earned runs over 21 1-3 innings. He coughed up a 7-1 lead in his last start when he allowed six runs in the fifth during a loss to the Padres.
Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo was ejected for arguing balls and strikes during the sixth inning. Oquendo jogged down the line after plate umpire Lance Barnett called a pitch from the Pirates’ James McDonald that appeared to be a borderline outside strike for a 2-2 count on Jon Jay on Friday night. Oquendo kicked dirt on the plate after getting tossed, then put himself between Barnett and manager Mike Matheny in the game, as the Cardinals trailed 2-0. First base coach Chris Maloney moved to third and bench coach Mike Aldrete moved to first.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina missed his third start because of mid-back tightness, but both the player and team anticipates he might be back by the end of the weekend. Manager Mike Matheny said Friday before the start of a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates that Molina was much improved and was hopeful the four-time All-Star would be ready Saturday. Matheny said the team’s medical staff had no longer term concerns and Molina said when he tried to swing Friday results were much better than a day earlier. Tony Cruz got the third straight start in place of Molina, batting .315 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs, and the Cardinals again had no designated backup catcher. Cruz was batting .226 in 31 games with one homer and eight RBIs.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s James White sure likes what he hears from his coach. Paul Rhoads says the Cyclones will run the football — a lot. White grinned when he heard that and he should. White became the starter last fall after a neck injury in the fourth game sidelined Shontrelle Johnson. He responded by bursting through a hole and sprinting 76 yards for a touchdown against Baylor in the very next game. He finished the season as the team’s leading rusher with 743 yards on 159 carries, a solid 4.7 per carry average. He also caught 21 passes, scored a team-best nine touchdowns and had seven runs of more than 25 yards.
