ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kyle Lohse pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to earn his seventh consecutive win and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 4-2 on Wednesday night. Lohse (13-2) gave up two runs and retired his last 14 batters while improving to 7-0 with a 2.21 ERA in 12 starts since he dropped a 3-2 decision against Kansas City on June 15. The Cardinals have won consecutive games to grab a half-game lead on Pittsburgh for the second wild-card spot in the National League. Mitchell Boggs worked a scoreless eighth and Jason Motte finished for his 29th save in 34 chances, completing a three-hitter.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Northern Iowa’s football team is ranked No. 7 in a preseason poll of head coaches in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Panthers are one of five Missouri Valley teams in the 25-team poll, led by defending national champion North Dakota State at No. 1. Northern Iowa went 10-3 last season, winning a share of the league title and posting its sixth season of at least 10 victories since 2001. The Panthers open the season on Sept. 1 when they face reigning Big Ten champion Wisconsin.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard is the latest Cyclone to make a long-term commitment to the institution. He has agreed to a five-year contract extension according to ISU President Steven Leath.
“In my brief tenure at Iowa State, I have found Jamie to be an extremely competent and visionary leader,” Dr. Leath said. “The program’s record of academic and athletic achievement in concert with a sound business plan is impressive.”
Pollard had two years remaining on his current contact so the extension will run through 2019.
Iowa State has registered its all-time best athletics’ graduation rate and national all-sports ranking during Pollard’s tenure. The program has also set attendance records in every major sport, invested nearly $100 million in new and renovated facilities and eliminated its dependence upon state funding since Pollard came to Iowa State in 2005.
“We have more work to do,” Pollard said, “so I am extremely grateful to President Leath for the confidence he has shown in our administrative team. Our program is primed for success and I’m anxious to continue building alongside, what we feel, is the best coaching staff in ISU history.”
Final terms of the contract will be announced at a later date.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s season opener against Tulsa has been moved from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Cyclones say the time change was made at the behest of Fox Sports Net and the Big 12. The move is expected to give the Sept. 1 matchup at Jack Trice Stadium more exposure on Fox Sports Net, which is broadcasting the game. Iowa State will also play at 2:30 p.m. the following week at Iowa. The Cyclones will then host Western Illinois at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright matched his career high with 12 strikeouts in a five-hitter and the St. Louis Cardinals punished rookie Lucas Harrell with six runs in the first three innings, getting over an excruciating 19-inning loss two days earlier with a 7-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Skip Schumaker and Yadier Molina had two RBIs apiece for the Cardinals, who got six hits the first seven at-bats in a four-run first and then capitalized on a pair of walks to open a two-run third. Jon Jay had three hits and an RBI. Wainwright (12-10) threw his second shutout and third complete game of the season. Two of the complete games have come during a string of six consecutive victories at home with a 1.42 ERA. He pitched a five-hitter on Aug. 4, a 6-1 victory over the Brewers.
Carlos Beltran, the National League’s RBIs leader, missed his second start in three games because of a right hand injury. St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said the hand has been bothering Beltran for a while. Beltran was 0 for 8 in a 19-inning loss to the Pirates on Sunday, and Matheny said the injury has flared up, but that he didn’t think he’d be out long. Beltran is hitting .278 with 28 homers and 85 RBIs Regular first baseman Allen Craig moved to right field for Tuesday night’s game against the Houston Astros, with Matt Carpenter replacing Craig at first. Matheny said Craig is more comfortable in the outfield.

The Redbirds have agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Jake Westbrook with a mutual option for 2014. The 34-year-old Westbrook is 12-9 with a 3.50 ERA in 24 starts this season, leaving him three shy of 100 career victories. The sinkerballer leads the National League with 22 double plays induced and is also the best in the league at getting ground balls at 73 percent. Westbrook is in his second full season with the Cardinals, who acquired him in a deal with the Indians at the 2010 trade deadline. The Cardinals announced the contract on Tuesday.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa freshmen Barkley Hill and Ruben Lile will redshirt the 2012 season because of injuries. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz says Hill, a running back, tore the ACL in his left knee during practice on Saturday and will have surgery later this week. Hill was in the mix for playing time as a true freshman because of Iowa’s lack of depth at back. But his absence for the upcoming season means that Damon Bullock and freshman Greg Garmon will likely occupy the top of the depth chart. Ferentz says that Lile, a freshman defensive back from Detroit, suffered a similar injury to Hill’s without getting into further details. The Hawkeyes open the season on Sept. 1 against Northern Illinois in Chicago.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — New Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby views the league as healthy and stable, with its 10 members committed to each other. Now he’s trying to get everyone else to see it that way too. Bowlsby says one of the Big 12’s biggest immediate challenges is in changing public perceptions of the league. Many of those who saw the league brought to the brink of extinction more than once still look at it as a shaky alliance of disjointed institutions. Bowlsby acknowledged during a visit to Iowa State that even he was skeptical of how dedicated the Big 12’s members were to each other. But Bowlsby says those concerns were alleviated by the leadership of the member institutions. Bowlsby left one of the nation’s top athletic director jobs, Stanford, for the Big 12 in May.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State senior quarterback Steele Jantz will open the season as the Cyclones starter.
Coach Paul Rhoads announced Tuesday that Jantz will start for Iowa State against Tulsa on Sept. 1, ending the competition between Jantz and sophomore Jared Barnett.
Jantz started seven games for Iowa State in 2011, but he was pulled in favor of Barnett after a foot injury and increasing ineffectiveness.
Barnett led the Cyclones past then-No. 2 Oklahoma State in late November, but he struggled in a 27-13 loss to Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Jantz threw 10 touchdown passes and was picked off 11 times last season. Still, Rhoads says Jantz’s skill set is ideal for Iowa State’s spread offense.
