Iowa State senior linebacker A.J. Klein would like to see less black and gold on the ISU campus. Klein says he sees too many of his fellow students wearing Iowa Hawkeye gear. Klein says “It’s irritating.” He says “You should have pride in your school,” no matter where it is located. Klein, who grew up in Wisconsin, says he’s a supporter of the Cyclones, not the Badgers. He says seeing students support Iowa while attending ISU is like a “Punch to the jaw.” Klein says he would like to see all ISU students support the Cyclones. He says he understands fans from both teams can be “hard headed,” but he would like to see more Cyclone fans show their support by wearing the appropriate clothing, not that of the opposing team.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Joe Kelly pitched 6 2-3 effective innings and also doubled, helping the St. Louis Cardinals defeat the New York Mets 5-4. Kelly (5-6) allowed five hits and two runs. He made his second start after a brief stint in the bullpen, and turned in his longest outing of the season. Edward Mujica got the last out of the seventh, giving him 16 straight scoreless appearances since coming over from Miami at the trade deadline. Jason Motte recorded five outs for his 33rd save in 38 chances. Skip Schumaker hit a solo homer and Matt Carpenter drove in two runs for the NL wild card-leading Cardinals. Daniel Murphy and Kelly Shoppach hit two-run homers for New York, which had won three straight and seven of eight.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs might be the only NFL team that has more questions heading into the regular season than they had at the start of training camp. Most of it pertains to injuries. Linebacker Derrick Johnson has been hobbling around on a bad ankle, cornerback Brandon Flowers has a bum heel, safety Kendrick Lewis is dealing with a shoulder injury. and backup cornerback Jalil Brown has been trying to recover from a groin strain. That’s just on defense, where the Chiefs are also without Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali for Sunday’s game against Atlanta. He’s suspended for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Still, Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel believes most of the injured guys will be ready to go, and after an encouraging preseason finale, he’s optimistic about the first game that counts.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State running back Shontrelle Johnson was forced to confront the possibility that he’d never play football again. Now Johnson has bounced back from months spent worrying about a neck injury and is in the best shape of his life. Johnson, who missed much of 2011 following a scary injury in early October, celebrated his return to football on Saturday with the best outing of his career. Johnson rushed for a personal-best 120 yards on 18 carries as Iowa State beat Tulsa 38-23. Johnson and fellow junior James White will split carries on Saturday when the Cyclones (1-0) play at rival Iowa (1-0).
It was a perfect Week 1 for the retooled Big 12, at least as far as the scoreboard goes. All the league’s members, including newcomers TCU and West Virginia, got off to winning starts. How they got there varied widely, and in some cases left more questions than answers. No. 4 Oklahoma scuffled its way to a 24-7 victory at UTEP, No. 22 Kansas State needed a late scoring binge to separate from stubborn Missouri State, Iowa State trailed Tulsa early and Kansas had its hands full with South Dakota State in the second half. Sooners coach Bob Stoops says there is more parity than ever in college football, so early season mismatches that became a hallmark of the opening weekend are becoming rarer.

Thousands of hunters were out in Iowa fields this weekend as the dove season opened Saturday. Todd Bogenschutz, wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says up to 9,000 hunters took part in the inaugural 2011 season. “I expect that to increase and I wouldn’t be surprised, when we get done with this season, if maybe we’re in the 10,000 to 15,000
range this fall,” Bogenschutz said. “It’s the second year and there was a lot of positive reports last year and a lot of success, so I expect numbers to go up a little bit.”
Last year, more than 57,000 mourning doves were harvested in Iowa during the 70 day long season. Hunters could see even more birds this year. “Anecdotally, doing our roadside counts, staff reported seeing a lot of doves on the roadside. So, it looks like they had a pretty good production year this year,” Bogenschutz said.
The Iowa DNR has dedicated food plots for doves around the state that are open to public hunting. Bogenschutz believes dove hunting is a great way to introduce individuals to hunting because it takes place when the weather is nice, a hunting dog isn’t needed and it mostly involves sitting and waiting for doves to arrive. “You put all of those factors together, it just makes for a really great sport to bring new people in,” Bogenschutz said. “There’s a lot of opportunities for shooting. Granted, (doves) are difficult to hit, which makes it challenging but there’s lots of opportunity there.” In addition to doves, the rabbit and squirrel hunting seasons opened in Iowa this weekend.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg allowed two hits over six scoreless innings, striking out nine before being pulled Sunday as the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3. The NL East-leading Nationals took three of four from St. Louis and passed their 80-win total from last season. Strasburg, rocked for seven runs last Tuesday at Miami, left with a 2-0 lead. The 23-year-old Strasburg has struck out 195 in 156 1-3 innings this season. The Nationals have repeatedly stated they intend on shutting him down in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2010. The Nationals have been vague about an innings limit, but the team sat Jordan Zimmermann at 161 1-3 innings last season in a similar situation.
