Iowa St G Palo charged with sexual abuse

Sports

September 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State basketball player Bubu Palo has been arrested after being accused of sexually abusing a woman he was driving home earlier this year.  Coach Fred Hoiberg says the 21-year-old reserve point guard has been suspended indefinitely.  Palo and another man, Spencer Cruise, were charged with second-degree sexual abuse and facing a court appearance after surrendering to authorities on Friday.   The criminal complaint says the men offered to give a woman a ride home on May 18 but instead drove her to a home owned by Cruise’s family and “committed a sex act by force against the victim’s will.”  Police say evidence includes both men’s DNA and test results only recently came back from a crime lab.

Big 12 Reaches $2.6B Deal with ESPN, Fox Sports

Sports

September 7th, 2012 by Jim Field

DALLAS (AP) — The Big 12 has reached an agreement with ESPN and Fox Sports on a 13-year contract reportedly worth $2.6 billion to televise football and men’s basketball through 2024-25.

Financial terms of the deal announced Friday weren’t released.

The deal will include games on ABC and all of the ESPN platforms, including the Longhorn Network. ESPN said Fox Sports was also part of the agreement.

ESPN said it will televise up to 19 conference-controlled football games through 2015, then that number would increase to 23 starting in 2016.

ESPN will have exclusive rights to the Big 12 basketball tournament and will televise up to 105 games per season.

Hawkeyes Look to Contain Iowa State QB Jantz

Sports

September 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State quarterback Steele Jantz played about as well as anyone ever has in the century-old rivalry between the Cyclones and Iowa last September. Jantz didn’t come close to replicating his four-touchdown performance in a 44-41, triple-overtime win over the Hawkeyes in 2011 — until last weekend. He thrived in his second chance as Iowa State’s starter, throwing for a career-high 281 yards and scoring three TDs as the Cyclones beat Tulsa 38-23 in its opener. The Hawkeyes (1-0) get another shot at stopping Jantz when they host Iowa State (1-0) in their home opener on Saturday.   You can hear the game on KJAN with the pre-game beginning at 12:30 and kick-off at 2:30.

Chiefs turn to D-III player to replace Hali

Sports

September 6th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ replacement for one of the NFL’s most feared pass rushers this Sunday will be an unheralded veteran linebacker out of tiny Wheaton College. It won’t be the first time Andy Studebaker has started a game, but it’ll surely be like none other: It’s the season-opener against the Atlanta Falcons, and Studebaker will be taking the place of Tamba Hali, who is suspended for Week 1 for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Studebaker knows that he can’t be Hali, whose 12 sacks last season ranked second in the AFC. Studebaker isn’t known for getting after the quarterback anyway. Instead, he’s known for grit and determination that not only allowed him to make an NFL roster out of college, but hang around this long.
