Iowa St faces W Illinois, seeking 3-0 start

Sports

September 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is supposed to get only one breather this season. It’s scheduled for Saturday against Western Illinois. It’s nothing but Big 12 games for the Cyclones after this weekend. Iowa State (2-0) hosts the FCS Leathernecks (2-0) in its final game before a bye week and the start of conference play. The Cyclones are seeking their second consecutive 3-0 start, winning as underdogs at home against Tulsa and against rival Iowa on the road. Safety Durell Givens says Iowa State’s focus is on reaching 3-0, adding that the Cyclones won’t underestimate Western Illinois.

Berry vs Johnson gives subplot to Chiefs vs Bills

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — One of the intriguing plots in Sunday’s game between the Chiefs and Bills involves Kansas City safety Eric Berry, who tore his left ACL when Buffalo’s Steve Johnson blocked him at the knees in the 2011 season opener. Berry tweeted in the offseason that he wondered whether it was done on purpose, and then said in April, “You can look at the tape and make your own opinion about that.” Johnson has always denied he was trying to hurt Berry, and the block was within the rules. The Bills wide receiver was quick to mention that this week. On Sunday, Berry and the Chiefs visit Johnson and the Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Cards edge Dodgers 2-1, extend wild-card lead

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Allen Craig drove in Shane Robinson with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals extended their NL wild-card lead over Los Angeles to two games with a 2-1 victory over the struggling Dodgers on Thursday night. Lance Lynn (15-7) pitched six innings of five-hit ball to earn his first win since July 27 for the Cardinals, striking out seven in the All-Star’s return to the rotation after a bullpen demotion. Skip Schumaker had an early run-scoring single as St. Louis (76-68) snapped its three-game skid and a four-game road losing streak with a nail-biting win over the Dodgers (74-70), who have lost four straight. Adrian Gonzalez had an RBI double in the Dodgers’ seventh loss in eight games.

Scuffling Iowa hosts dangerous Northern Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Northern Iowa’s near-upset of Iowa three years ago was one of the more stunning afternoons the Hawkeyes have ever had. Hardly anyone would be shocked if the Panthers finish the job in Iowa City on Saturday. Northern Iowa (1-1) of the FCS made a serious run at two-time Big Ten champion Wisconsin in Madison two weeks ago before losing 26-21. Iowa (1-1) struggled to get past Northern Illinois before a dismal showing in a 9-6 loss at home to Iowa State last week. The Panthers are 9-22 against FBS opponents since 1985. That stretch included that 17-16 loss at Iowa in 2009 in which the Hawkeyes blocked potential game-winning field goals on back-to-back plays, an NCAA first, to survive.

Hali’s Return Should Tune Up Chiefs Pass Rush

Sports

September 13th, 2012 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tamba Hali woke up Sunday morning, went for a walk and then settled in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs on television.

He much prefers his regular routine.

The Pro Bowl linebacker was back on the practice field Wednesday after serving a one-week suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Hali apologized for the transgression, but refused to get into the details about what caused the NFL to discipline him.

Hali said that he didn’t have any problem with the suspension levied by the NFL, and preferred to shift the focus back to the field and the Chiefs’ game Sunday at Buffalo, where he’ll try to bolster a pass rush that was virtually nonexistent in a 40-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons last weekend.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Clayton Richard pitched seven strong innings and rookie Yasmani Grandal singled home the go-ahead run to lift the San Diego Padres over the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Wednesday, handing the slumping World Series champions their 11th loss in 15 games. The Cardinals began the day with a one-game lead over Los Angeles for the second NL wild-card berth. The Dodgers, who played later at Arizona, host St. Louis in a crucial four-game series starting Thursday night. St. Louis put a runner on third with one out in the ninth but was unable to score. World Series MVP David Freese and pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker both grounded out. Logan Forsythe hit a solo home run for the Padres, who completed a three-game sweep of St. Louis for the first time since August 1995.

After three games with the Diamondbacks, and a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants, the Cardinals return to Busch Stadium on Monday, April 8 for the home opener against the division rival Cincinnati Reds. The first home series includes three games against the Reds and three games against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Throughout the season, the Cardinals face the Reds and National League Central Division opponent Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates a total of 19 times each. While interleague games will be played throughout the entire regular season, the Cardinals open an 11-game stretch of interleague play on Friday, June 21 as they host the Texas Rangers at Busch. Hali’s return should tune up Chiefs pass rush

Sports

September 12th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali was back in his familiar No. 91 jersey Wednesday after he was suspended for the Chiefs season opener. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said he expected Hali to take full part in practice after serving his one-game suspension for an undisclosed violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. His return couldn’t come soon enough for Kansas City, which failed to get much of a pass rush in a 40-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Justin Houston had the Chiefs’ only sack, allowing Matt Ryan to shred the Kansas City secondary for 299 yards and three touchdowns passing. Hali made his first Pro Bowl last season after finishing second in the AFC with 12 sacks.  Kansas City plays at Buffalo on Sunday. You can hear the game on KJAN!
