Spiller sparks Bills’ 35-17 rout over Chiefs

Sports

September 16th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) – C.J. Spiller scored twice and had 123 yards rushing in sparking the Buffalo Bills’ 35-17 rout over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.  Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes, including a 49-yarder to Stevie Johnson, and Leodis McKelvin scored on an 88-yard punt return – the second longest in team history – in the Bills’ home opener. Buffalo’s high-priced defense had five sacks and forced three turnovers as the Bills bounced back from a dreadful season-opening 48-28 loss at the New York Jets last week. Dwayne Bowe scored both touchdowns for Kansas City, both coming in the final seven minutes to make the score respectable. Coming off a 40-24 loss at Atlanta, the Chiefs opened a season 0-2 for the sixth time in seven years.

Sports

September 16th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Steele Jantz threw three touchdown passes and James White ran 56 yards for another score, leading Iowa State to a 37-3 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday night. Penalties and turnovers frustrated Iowa State at times, but the Cyclones still had enough to overpower their FCS opponent and start 3-0 for the second straight year and sixth time since 1981. Four of the five previous 3-0 starts led to bowl appearances. Jantz completed 19 of 26 passes for 209 yards, with touchdown throws of 16 and 5 yards to Chris Young and 22 yards to Aaron Horne. He was intercepted once and lost a fumble. Western Illinois (2-1) trailed 31-0 before Pat Smith kicked a 26-yard field goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Iowa State was playing its second-team defense by then.

Dodgers pull out win over Cardinals with 2-run 9th

Sports

September 16th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Luis Cruz came up with his second clutch hit in two nights, a tying two-out RBI double in the ninth inning, and pinch-hitter Juan Rivera followed with a run-scoring single to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Jason Motte (4-5) came in trying to protect a 3-2 lead for Jaime Garcia and retired his first two batters. But Andre Ethier kept the Dodgers alive with a single and pinch-runner Dee Gordon stole second before Cruz drove him in with a drive that center fielder Jon Jay barely missed on a diving attempt in front of the warning track. Rivera batted for A.J. Ellis and lined a single off the tip of second baseman Daniel Descalso’s glove, enabling pinch-runner Elian Herrera to score the winning run.

Osborne says Nebraska coach Pelini ‘doing fine’

Sports

September 15th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne says coach Bo Pelini is “doing fine” after leaving Saturday’s game against Arkansas State by ambulance after halftime. Pelini fell ill during the first half, and a member of the Nebraska medical staff was seen checking Pelini’s pulse. He stayed on the sideline the rest of the half and was taken to a hospital after doctors treated him in the locker room. Osborne said after the Huskers’ 42-13 win that initial reports from the hospital indicated Pelini was “doing fine” and that “it looks as though he’s in pretty good shape.” Osborne declined to comment on the nature of Pelini’s symptoms. Osborne said it was serious enough that the medical staff thought Pelini needed to be checked out at the hospital.
