Chiefs coach Crennel trying to juggle duties

Sports

September 19th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It’s only two weeks into the season and already Romeo Crennel is answering questions about whether he can handle the Chiefs’ head coaching duties along with being defensive coordinator. Crennel was elevated from defensive coordinator to interim coach when Todd Haley was fired last year, and took over the job on a full-time basis this season. But rather than hire a new coach to coordinate the defense, Crennel has chosen to handle both jobs himself. The results haven’t been good so far. Kansas City was routed by Atlanta and Buffalo, and now heads to New Orleans for a Sunday showdown between winless teams. Crennel says he’s not considering whether to give up the coordinator job.

Iowa St.’s Palo pleads not guilty to abuse charge

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Suspended Iowa State basketball player Bubu Palo has pleaded not guilty to one charge of sexual abuse. Palo was suspended Sept. 7 after being charged with sexually abusing a woman he was driving home earlier this year. Online court records say Palo’s attorney, Matthew Boles, filed a written plea of not guilty on Tuesday. Palo and another man, 21-year-old Spencer Cruise, of Ames, were charged with second-degree sexual abuse. The criminal complaint says the men offered to give a woman a ride home on May 18, but instead drove her to a home owned by Cruise’s family and “committed a sex act by force against the victim’s will.” Online records show that Cruise hasn’t entered a plea. Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg has suspended Palo, a reserve guard.

Banged-up Chiefs force changes to practice

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – It’s only Week 3 and already the Kansas City Chiefs are so banged up they’re altering their practice schedule.  The Chiefs were planning to practice in pads Wednesday, but coach Romeo Crennel said he would push that back by a day to give a lengthy list of players an extra day to heal.  Tight ends Kevin Boss and Jake O’Connell and offensive lineman Ryan Lilja are being held out of practice entirely. Dexter McCluster, Steve Breaston, Anthony Toribio, Allen Bailey, Kendrick Lewis and Jalil Brown will all be limited in practice.  Running back Jamaal Charles was expected to practice fully after dinging his reconstructed left knee in Sunday’s 35-17 loss to Buffalo. He only carried six times for three yards in the game.  The Chiefs visit New Orleans on Sunday.

Cardinals agree to Class A deal with Peoria

Sports

September 19th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals say the Peoria Chiefs will be their new full-season Class A minor league affiliate through 2016.  The announcement appears to confirm earlier reports that the Chicago Cubs plan to end their affiliation with Peoria. Cardinals Senior General Manager John Mozeliak said in a statement Wednesday that the deal with the Chiefs will give St. Louis better presence in an area with many Cardinals fans.

The Chiefs were a Cardinals minor league affiliate from 1995-2004 and for several years in the 1950s. Yadier Molina is among a handful of current Cardinals who played in Peoria.  News reports last month indicated the Cubs were ending their relationship with the Chiefs and working on an agreement with the Kane County Cougars. Neither team has confirmed those reports.

Where have all the passing yards gone in Big Ten?

Sports

September 19th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — This was supposed to be a year the Big Ten went airborne. Seven of the top 10 passing quarterbacks from 2011 were back, as were nine of the 12 primary starters under center. Blame it on injuries, on graduation losses, on hybrid signal-callers or parity, but the Big Ten isn’t flying all that high. More conference teams rank in the bottom 25 in the nation in passing than the top 50. And that won’t change much once league play begins.

Lohse wins 15th, Cardinals beat Astros 4-1

Sports

September 19th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kyle Lohse threw seven scoreless innings for his 15th victory and contributed an RBI double as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 4-1 Tuesday night to stay in front for the second NL wild card. Fernando Abad (0-5) had a career-best six strikeouts in the Astros’ 100th loss. They’re 8-8 this month under interim manager Tony DeFrancesco and need nine wins in the final 14 games to avoid topping last season’s franchise-record 106 losses. Daniel Descalso got a key early RBI and Jon Jay had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, coming off a 2-5 trip but with a favorable upcoming schedule with the next eight against lowly Houston and Chicago. With 14 games to play the defending World Series champions are 1½ games ahead of the Dodgers, rained out at Washington, and 2½ games ahead of the Brewers.

Groundbreaking anticipated in mid-November

Sports

September 18th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals anticipate breaking ground on Ballpark Village, long delayed by the economic downturn, in mid-November. The $100 million first phase of the development is scheduled for completion by opening day in 2014. The announcement Tuesday followed approval by the Missouri Development Finance Board, one of the final steps in the approval process. Team president William DeWitt III called it a “significant milestone in a long journey to make Ballpark Village a reality.” The project has hit several snags since the new Busch Stadium opened in 2006 and the space is now a concrete parking lot. The first phase will feature 100,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space along Clark Street next to Busch Stadium. The price tag for the seven-block $700 million mixed use project.
