NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Kansas City center Rodney Hudson and receiver Dexter McCluster left Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints after being injured in the third quarter. After trainers looked at Hudson’s right knee, he was replaced by Ryan Lilja, who moved over from left guard, while Jeff Allen came in to play guard.

McCluster hurt his shoulder, which had been bothering him during the week, leaving his status as questionable coming into the game. His injury occurred when fell after making a short catch, letting the ball go moments before he would have been touched down by cornerback Jabari Greer. Officials initially ruled McCluster down, but the call was changed on replay review to a fumble recovered by New Orleans. Chiefs officials say McCluster’s return is questionable.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Ryan Succop kicked six field goals, one to force overtime in the final seconds and another from 31 yards to lift the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-24 victory over the winless New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Succop’s 43-yard field goal with 3 seconds left completed a methodical comeback by Kansas City (1-2) after the Saints (0-3) had cashed in on a pair of Chiefs turnovers to go ahead 24-6 in the third quarter. Kansas City needed only one touchdown to win, a 91-yard run by Jamaal Charles, who finished with 233 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving. The Chiefs also got a safety in the fourth quarter on Justin Houston’s third sack of the game. Drew Brees passed for 240 yards and three touchdowns, but missed all six of his passes through the fourth quarter and overtime.

Cardinals C Molina out at Cubs with back spasms

Sports

September 23rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is out of the starting lineup against the Chicago Cubs because of lower back spasms. Molina tweaked his back when he turned to avoid an inside pitch from Cubs closer Carlos Marmol in the ninth inning of Saturday’s 5-4 win. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Sunday that Molina felt better but was still a bit tight and needed a day off. Right fielder Carlos Beltran isn’t starting because of what Matheny suspects is food poisoning. Beltran hit the game-tying home run in the ninth off of Marmol on Saturday to send the game to extra innings. Matheny says Beltran will likely be available. St. Louis enters play Sunday leading the second wild card by 2½ games over the Milwaukee Brewers.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Saints receiver Marques Colston and Chiefs starting left guard Ryan Lilja are active for the game between Kansas City and New Orleans after being listed as questionable with injuries during the past week. Colston had been limited by a left foot injury, while Lilja had back soreness. Chiefs receiver Dexter McCluster also is active Sunday after being listed as questionable with a sore shoulder. New Orleans has scratched receiver Joe Morgan and running backs Chris Ivory and Travaris Cadet, all of whom were healthy. The Chiefs scratched mostly injured players, including starting defensive tackle Anthony Toribio (ankle) and starting safety Kendrick Lewis (shoulder). Kansas City tight end Kevin Boss (head) already had been ruled out, as was Saints defensive end Turk McBride (left ankle).
