IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Three Iowa football players, including starting cornerback Micah Hyde, have been arrested in separate incidents.  The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the 21-year-old Hyde was arrested early Saturday morning at an Iowa City bar on suspicion of public intoxication and interference with official acts. A police report says he was among of group of people who refused to leave the bar at closing time and fought with the bar’s staff. Back-up tight end Ray Hamilton was arrested at a different bar on suspicion of being underage at a bar after 10 p.m., and reserve offensive lineman Drew Clark was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Jared Barnett threw three touchdowns to Josh Lenz, who later had a scoring toss of his own on a trick play, and Iowa State won 37-23 at No. 15 TCU on Saturday to end the Horned Frogs’ FBS-best 12-game winning streak.

It was the first Big 12 home game for conference newcomer TCU (4-1, 1-1), which played without suspended quarterback Casey Pachall.

Barnett was 12-of-21 passing for 183 yards and ran nine times for 30 yards in his first start this season for the Cyclones (4-1, 1-1).

The Frogs had won a nation-best 25 conference games in a row, the first 24 while winning the Mountain West championship each of the last three seasons.

Lenz had TD catches of 51 and 74 yards in the first quarter.

Trevone Boykin started for TCU and was 23-of-40 passing for 270 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Drake University football team’s defense forced six turnovers en route to a 38-10 victory over San Diego Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium. The homecoming win avenged the Bulldogs’ only Pioneer Football League loss from a year ago and improved Drake to 3-0 in the PFL and 4-2 overall.

The Toreros, who shared the PFL title with Drake last season, dropped to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in PFL play.

The Drake defense forced a season-high six turnovers on the afternoon, never giving San Diego an opportunity to get into rhythm on offense.

Drake put up 378 yards of total offense, but had great field position throughout the day thanks to the defense’s effort. Senior quarterback Mike Piatkowski had four touchdowns on the afternoon, three passing and one on the ground and was 21-of-31 through the air for 250 yards.

The Bulldogs continue PFL play next weekend at Valparaiso. Kickoff is scheduled for noon

Atlantic Trojan Senior Quarterback Harrison Hoegh has set a new school single season passing yardage record.  Hoegh had a great game on Friday night at Perry throwing for 247 yards  and a touchdown.  Hoegh also ran for a score on a 36 yard run.

Hoegh’s passing total after the game was up to 1,873 yards which tops the previous season total record of 1,817 yards in 2002 by Bret Meyer.

Hoegh has at least two more games to add to that total with home games versus Harlan and Glenwood to end the regular season.

Another team record is in danger of being broken as well as Senior Receiver Sam Markham is now only 18 yards away from the single season receiving yardage record of 814 yards set by Al Wernimont in 1971.

ATLANTA (AP) – Just like last year, the Braves lost out on a spot in the NL division series to the St. Louis Cardinals. Only this time, Atlanta was knocked out with the help of what will be remembered as one of the most disputed infield fly calls in baseball history.

Trailing by three runs, the Braves would have had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth inning. Instead they had runners on second and third with two outs, didn’t score again and lost 6-3 Friday night in baseball’s first, one-and-done, wild-card playoff game.

Just like that, the focus shifted from Chipper Jones’ impending retirement and the end of Kris Medlen’s winning streak to a call that led to a 19-minute delay caused by enraged fans throwing debris and a protest by Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Andrelton Simmons’ fly ball into shallow left field fell between shortstop Pete Kozma and left fielder Matt Holliday, sparking the furor. Just before the ball dropped, left field umpire Sam Holbrook raised his arm to signal an infield fly, meaning Simmons was out.

The call was later than is usual on an infield fly, a rule designed to prevent fielders from deliberately letting balls fall in attempts for a double play. This ball landed at least 50 feet beyond the infield.

Gonzalez ran onto the field and argued the call with Holbrook and other members of the umpire crew.

Last year, the Braves led St. Louis by 10 1/2 games in the wild-card race before play on Aug. 26 and still were up by 8 1/2 games on the morning of Sept. 6. Atlanta went 9-18 in September, ended with a five-game losing streak and finished a game behind the Cardinals, who went on to win the World Series.

This year, with a second wild card added, the Braves went 94-68 and the Cardinals 88-74, setting up the wild-card matchup in the expanded postseason.

Atlanta then played one of its worst games of the year, blowing a two-run lead, making three errors that led to four unearned runs and going 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position. The Braves had the fewest errors in the NL during the regular season.

One of the errors was by Jones, whose bad throw on a potential double-play grounder helped allow the Cardinals to score three runs in the third and go ahead for good. Second baseman Dan Uggla and shortstop Andrelton Simmons also made throwing errors in the seventh, helping the Cardinals add two runs.

The 40-year-old Jones was 1 for 5, reaching on an infield single in the ninth and ending his career stranded at third base when Uggla hit a game-ending groundout. Jones tipped his helmet before his final at-bat.

Even after the controversial call, Atlanta had a chance in the eighth. The Cardinals brought in closer Jason Motte, who loaded the bases with a walk to pinch-hitter Brian McCann before striking out Michael Bourn on a 3-2 pitch.

Atlanta had won a record 23 straight starts by Medlen, who was 9-0 with a 0.97 ERA in 12 starts this season. He had not lost as a starter since May 23, 2010, at Pittsburgh. In this one he allowed five runs – two earned – and three hits in 6 1-3 innings.

David Ross’ two-run homer put the Braves ahead in the second,  but after Jones’ error the Cardinals went ahead on an RBI double by World Series star Allen Craig, Yadier Molina’s run-scoring groundout and David Freese’s sacrifice fly. Holliday homered in the sixth to make it 4-2.

After Uggla’s error on Freese’s leadoff grounder in the seventh, Simmons made his bad throw on a grounder by rookie Pete Kozma and Matt Carpenter hit a run-scoring infield single to the pitcher.

Bourn’s RBI grounder in the seventh was the only other run the Braves could muster. Atlanta sent the tying run to the plate in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

And now the Braves have all winter to think about another season with a sour ending.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – TCU coach Gary Patterson was planning to use backup quarterback Trevone Boykin as a tailback when the 15th-ranked Horned Frogs play Iowa State.  Boykin will be in the backfield Saturday, but instead as the starting quarterback with Casey Pachall suspended indefinitely. Pachall was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The Frogs (4-0) were looking at Boykin as a tailback option since they’ve already lost their leading rusher to a season-ending knee injury and current starter Matthew Tucker is dealing with an ankle injury. TCU, which has won 12 games in a row, is playing its first Big 12 home game. Boykin is 9-of-10 passing for 74 yards and a touchdown, and has run 12 times for 122 yards and a score.

ATLANTA (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals are carrying 10 pitchers, one more than the Braves, on their 25-man roster for their NL wild-card game against Atlanta. Kyle Lohse is starting today (Friday). Manager Mike Matheny has only one other starting pitcher, Lance Lynn, active for the game. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has three starting pitchers on his roster.

The Cardinals are carrying three catchers, with Bryan Anderson and Tony Cruz available behind starter Yadier Molina.  Marc Rzepczynski and Sam Freeman are the only left-handers in the Cardinals’ bullpen. Matheny is sticking with second baseman Daniel Descalso and shortstop Pete Kozma as his starting middle-infield combination. Winning teams in the wild-card games can reset their rosters for the division series.
