ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chris Hines scored 16 points and Drake defeated Bradley 81-66 Thursday in the opener of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. The ninth-seeded Bulldogs (15-16) earned a quarterfinal game against regular-season champion Creighton on Friday. Joey King scored 15 and Gary Ricks added 14 points for Drake. The Bulldogs led by as many as 17 points in the first half, though the Braves scored the last eight of the half to cut Drake’s lead at the break to 41-32.

Bradley (16-16) got within three with 6½ minutes left, but Drake went on a 13-0 run to put it out of reach in St. Louis, Missouri. Jake Eastman had 15 points and eight rebounds for the eighth-seeded Braves. Will Egolf also scored 15 points, Walt Lemon Jr. scored 14 and Tyshon Pickett added 11 for Bradley, which improved nine games from last season’s 7-25 finish.

Ferentz’s future son-in-law to get new supervisor

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa says an administrative assistant who is the future son-in-law of Coach Kirk Ferentz will no longer report to the football program to avoid nepotism concerns. Athletic director Gary Barta said Thursday that Tyler Barnes would now be supervised by Rick Klatt, who oversees the department’s marketing and media relations. He said Barnes had been a model employee, but the change in supervision was necessary because Barnes is planning to marry Ferentz’s 25-year-old daughter in July.

The announcement comes after The Gazette reported Ferentz didn’t disclose the relationship earlier to Barta. University records show that Ferentz last fall sought and received permission to extend Barnes’ temporary position for a second year through Jan. 2014. Barta says a university review will determine Barnes’ “long-term employment options.”

Iowa to review job of Ferentz’s future son-in-law

March 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa athletics department is considering whether to move the future son-in-law of Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz out of the football program.  University spokesman Mark Braun said Thursday that Athletics Director Gary Barta is reviewing the employment of Tyler Barnes and would take appropriate action.

Braun said a report in The Gazette about Barnes’ hiring as administrative assistant for football raises questions about whether the school followed its policy on nepotism. He said Barnes and Ferentz have a relationship and the question now is how to handle it.

Barnes was hired without a search last year, and his temporary position was recently extended for a second year through January 2014. Barnes had previously worked in the athletics department. He got engaged last year to Ferentz’s 25-year-old daughter.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Hallie Christofferson and senior Chelsea Poppens have been named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while sophomore Nikki Moody was an honorable mention selection. It marks the first time in school history that Iowa State has had two All-Big 12 first team selections.

Christofferson, a forward from Hamlin, Iowa, was a unanimous first-team pick after averaging 16 points and 6.8 rebounds. In conference play, Christofferson averaged 16.1 points and was second in the league in field goal percentage at 53.4 percent. She was also second in the league with an 85.3 percent clip at the free-throw line.

Christofferson, who shot 50 percent or better in 19 games, was in double figures in 24 of 28 games, including 10 games with 20 or more points.

Iowa State is the only Big 12 school to have a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection in each of the last four seasons.

Poppens, a forward from Aplington, Iowa, earned first-team honors for the second season in a row. She averaged 13.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game this season. Earlier this season, Poppens became the 14th player in Big 12 history to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Poppens also ranks fourth in free-throw shooting at 83.5 percent. She recorded three games this season with at least 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Poppens posted seven double-doubles this season.
