Alex Karras with Wife, Kids After Kidney Failure

Sports

October 9th, 2012 by Jim Field

Former Iowa Hawkeye and Detroit Lions defensive star Alex Karras is at home, spending his final days with his family.

Craig Mitnick, Karras’ attorney in a lawsuit against the NFL, says Karras may be dying from kidney failure because his body has caught up to the dementia he suffers from. Mitnick says the family hasn’t yet decided whether his brain will be donated to research the effects of head injuries in football.

The 77-year-old, former All-Pro defensive tackle and actor was surrounded by his wife and kids on Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles.

Karras later joined “Monday Night Football” as a broadcaster and had a well-known appearance as Mongo in the 1974 movie “Blazing Saddles” as well as the 1980s sitcom “Webster.”

Iowa CB Hyde apologizes for “stupid” mistake

Sports

October 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa cornerback Micah Hyde says he made a stupid mistake and let a lot of people down after being arrested in Iowa City last weekend. Hyde apologized to his family, coaches and teammates on Tuesday in his first public comments since being booked on suspicion of public intoxication and interference with official acts early last Saturday.

Coach Kirk has removed Hyde, a three-year starter, as a team captain. He also tightened the team’s curfew after Hyde and reserves Ray Hamilton and Drew Clark were arrested in separate alcohol-related incidents. Ferentz says he didn’t suspend any of those players for Saturday’s game at Michigan State largely because of their positive behavior prior to last weekend.

Chiefs’ Cassel with concussion, Quinn likely QB

Sports

October 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel sustained a concussion in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against Baltimore and is unlikely to play in next weekend’s game at Tampa Bay. Cassel was hit by the Ravens’ Haloti Ngata while completing a pass to Jamaal Charles in the Chiefs’ 9-6 loss. He remained on the ground for several minutes before walking off the field. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said Monday he’s not yet ruling Cassel out against the Buccaneers, but he also said that the quarterback’s health is of paramount importance. Crennel said that Brady Quinn will prepare to start next Sunday’s game. Ricky Stanzi would be the backup quarterback.

Cardinals rout Nationals 12-4, tie NLDS 1-all

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Beltran hit the last two of St. Louis’ four homers and the Cardinals chased an ineffective Jordan Zimmermann early in a 12-4 rout of the Washington Nationals on Monday night that tied their NL division series at one game apiece Allen Craig and Daniel Descalso also went deep to help the Cardinals build a big lead and compensate for a two-inning start from Jaime Garcia. Craig hit his fifth career postseason homer and scored three times. Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche hit consecutive homers in the fifth inning for the Nationals, who won’t pitch All-Star ace Stephen Strasburg — shut down for the year early last month.

Rested Buccaneers turn attention to Chiefs

Sports

October 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are rested and say they eager to resume their season. Coaches and players reconvened Monday following a bye week that provided extra time to evaluate the team’s progress after a slow start through four games, focus on fundamentals in practice and make some adjustments that Greg Schiano hopes will be beneficial the final 12 weeks of the season. The Bucs (1-3) will try to snap a three-game losing streak when they host the struggling Kansas City Chiefs (1-4) Sunday.

Iowa State turns to Barnett at QB

Sports

October 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Senior Steele Jantz is the most dynamic choice Iowa State has at quarterback. Jared Barnett is probably the safest one. But the safe bet was certainly dynamic in his first start of 2012 and coach Paul Rhoads is sticking with Barnett for Saturday’s game against No. 6 Kansas State (5-0, 2-0 Big 12). Rhoads benched Jantz in favor of Barnett for last Saturday’s game at TCU. Barnett came through with three touchdown passes to senior Josh Lenz as Iowa State (4-1, 1-1) beat the Horned Frogs 37-23. If Barnett can play as well as he did at TCU for the rest of the season, Rhoads will keep starting him.
