STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy still isn’t sure who the Cowboys’ starting quarterback will be against Iowa State. Gundy said Monday that Wes Lunt, who suffered a knee injury on Sept. 15, is “day-to-day” but has started working with the Cowboys’ starters in practice. Backup J.W. Walsh, who’s started three games in Lunt’s absence, also is getting work in with Oklahoma State’s first team. Gundy says Iowa State (4-2, 1-2 Big 12 Conference) will have to prepare for both quarterbacks.
Whoever start Saturday, Oklahoma State (3-2, 1-1) is looking to improve upon an anemic performance in a 20-14 win over Kansas, in which the Cowboys managed just 371 yards of offense.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are staggering into their bye week. Their latest debacle was Sunday’s 38-10 rout at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that dropped their record to 1-5. It was their fourth blowout loss in six games, and it came one week after tackle Eric Winston chided fans for cheering after quarterback Matt Cassel suffered a head injury.
Fans and columnists are calling for the firing of coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli. Some are vowing to boycott the Chiefs until changes are made. The team will practice Monday through Wednesday before taking off the rest of the week.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s running game is scuffling, and the Cyclones have to try to fix it with their leading rusher on the sideline. The Cyclones are last in the Big 12 in rushing after managing only 65 yards on the ground in last Saturday’s 27-21 loss to Kansas State. James White, who leads the team with 264 yards rushing, missed that game and won’t play in next Saturday’s game at Oklahoma State.
Coach Paul Rhoads pounded the table twice during his weekly press conference to emphasize his point that the Cyclones have to run the ball to be successful. Iowa State (4-2, 1-2 Big 12) is 14-4 under Rhoads when rushing for at least 190 yards in a game and 8-18 when it falls below that figure.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Less than a month ago, Iowa was coming off a startling loss to Central Michigan. The Hawkeyes didn’t look like a championship team in the MAC, much less the Big Ten. Then the conference season started, and the turnaround was immediate. After Saturday’s victory at Michigan State, Iowa is tied with Michigan atop the Legends Division heading into next weekend’s big home game against Penn State. Mark Weisman ran for 116 yards and the tying touchdown Saturday before hurting his right ankle. He’s been instrumental in Iowa’s improvement, averaging 6.3 yards per carry with eight rushing TDs on the season.
