IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — There isn’t much evidence to suggest that Iowa is all that good this season. The Hawkeyes are resilient, though. In the Big Ten in 2012, that might be enough. An Iowa team that has looked awful at times is tied for first place in the Legends Division heading into Saturday night’s home game with Penn State (4-2, 2-0 Big Ten). Iowa (4-2, 2-2) has proven to be a mentally tough bunch, a trait that’s allowed them to overcome more than a few shortcomings.
The second half of the season couldn’t arrive fast enough for the Big Ten Conference. With most everyone having six games under their belts, the official second half of the season is beginning this week. That offers the Big Ten a chance to move on from a fairly dreadful showing in the nonconference portion of the season and start building some momentum toward the bowl games.
Teams like Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin appear to be rebounding after some early struggles. The Wolverines were thumped by Alabama and the Hawkeyes suffered an embarrassing loss to Central Michigan. But both are 2-0 in conference play, while the Badgers are in position to represent the Leaders Division in the Big Ten championship game because Penn State and Ohio State are ineligible.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa running back Mark Weisman’s status for Saturday’s game against Penn State is uncertain after he sprained his right ankle in last week’s double-overtime win over Michigan State. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Weisman had an MRI performed on Monday that didn’t reveal anything serious. But Ferentz says Weisman would have to make a lot of progress to play against the Nittany Lions. Weisman leads the Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-0 Big Ten) with 631 yards rushing and eight touchdowns despite not starting until the fourth game of the season. Sophomore running back Damon Bullock is also likely to miss his fourth straight game because of recurring symptoms from a head injury. Freshman Greg Garmon is scheduled to start for the Hawkeyes.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel, who sat out last week’s game at Tampa Bay with a concussion, has been cleared for non-contact practice and could play in the Chiefs’ next game on Oct. 28 against Oakland.
If Cassel does get the start, it could trigger a quarterback controversy. Never very popular with fans, Cassel’s stock has hit rock-bottom in Kansas City after he threw nine interceptions and had a hand in many of the team’s NFL-leading 19 turnovers the first five games.
His replacement, Brady Quinn, had two interceptions against the Buccaneers in his first start in almost three years as the Chiefs lost 38-10 and dropped to 1-5 going into this bye week.
Cassel was on the practice field with the other quarterbacks Tuesday going through non-contact drills.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg has inspired many people with his work ethic and success in all areas of his career. This morning, Hoiberg was lauded for his outstanding character as a role model by receiving the 2013 Robert D. Ray Pillar of Character Award.
Governor Robert Ray announced this year’s recipient at a press conference at the Sukup Basketball Complex in Ames today. Hoiberg will accept the Ray Award on April 19, 2013 at Character Counts in Iowa’s All-Star Evening in West Des Moines. An All-Star Evening is presented by Hy-Vee and benefits Character Counts in Iowa.
“This ranks up there with the awards I have received,” Hoiberg said. “It’s great to be known as an athlete, but it’s even a better honor to be recognized as a great role model. I want to thank Governor Ray and everyone associated with this award. It is a great honor.”
The Ray Awards are presented by Character Counts in Iowa and reflect former Governor Robert D. Ray’s lifelong commitment to civility and character development. The award is presented each spring to individuals who consistently demonstrate good character as a visible role model. Past recipients include Aaron Kampman, Dallas Clark, Shawn Johnson, Hayden Fry, Norman Borlaug and Ed Thomas.

A proposed ban on tobacco use at the Sunnyside Park skateboard area in Atlantic was snuffed out by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department Board of Directors, because it was too narrow in scope, and because the proposal came from an outside group, and not from the skateboarders themselves, who have been tasked with policing the area to keep it clean and free from vandalism.
The proposal was made by Cass County Community Hospital Tobacco Prevention/Cessation Specialist Karla Akers and Circles for Success Coordinator, Melissa Stark, in coordination with students with the Atlantic Middle School and other, local groups. Akers said while there may be a perception of skateboard enthusiasts being smokers in other parts of the country, she admitted she doesn’t know if there is a problem with smoking at skate park in Atlantic.
Akers gave some reasons why they think the skate park should be tobacco free. One the reasons, is it makes for a healthier place for kids to play. She says it reduces the toxic litter, and helps prevent younger kids from playing with discarded cigarette butts. It would eliminate the danger of second-hand smoke, and allow kids to have fun without tobacco products. She said they’d like the park to be a model for healthy behavior to the citizens of, and visitors to Atlantic.
Atlantic Parks and Rec Director Roger Herring said the proposal is too narrow in focus, and doesn’t give those who use the skate park a say in what the policies are. He says he would rather the proposal be made by the skate park users themselves, for one thing, as opposed to an outside group dictating their behavior. He says it boils down his personal philosophy of “You have to police your own.” The Park Board agreed, they needed more input from the skate park users and from the Middle School “Builders Club,” before discussing the matter further and taking any action.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Marco Scutaro bounced back from Matt Holliday’s hard slide by delivering a big hit of his own that helped the San Francisco Giants get their first home win this postseason, 7-1 over St. Louis on Monday night that tied the NL championship series at 1-all. The game got off to a testy start when Holliday barreled into Scutaro at second base to break up a potential double play in the first inning. The play riled up a crowd that had seen three straight losses by the Giants so far in the playoffs.
There was plenty to cheer all night for the Giants. Ryan Vogelsong pitched seven strong innings, Angel Pagan hit a leadoff homer and Scutaro hit a two-run single off Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter that broke the game open in a four-run fourth. Scutaro left after five innings because of an injured left hip, and was going for X-rays.
