Giants on to World Series with 9-0 win over Cards

Sports

October 23rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hunter Pence hit a bizarre, two-run double, Matt Cain pitched his second clincher of October and the San Francisco Giants won their record-tying sixth elimination game of the postseason, beating the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 in Game 7 of the NL championship series Monday night. Marco Scutaro matched an LCS record with 14 hits in the series and Pablo Sandoval drove in a run for his fifth straight game. The Giants returned to the World Series two years after winning it all, getting the final out in a downpour.

The Detroit Tigers, who have been waiting on their opponent since finishing a four-game ALCS sweep of the Yankees last Thursday, get another trip to the Bay Area after clinching the division series in Oakland.

Chiefs to start Quinn over Cassel at quarterback

Sports

October 22nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Brady Quinn will take over as the Kansas City Chiefs’ starting quarterback and Matt Cassel will serve as the backup beginning with Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders.  Quinn started in the Chiefs’ loss at Tampa Bay two weeks ago because Cassel was still feeling the effects of a concussion sustained the previous week against Baltimore.

The Chiefs were off last week and that gave coach Romeo Crennel an opportunity to evaluate both of them along with the team’s miserable 1-5 start.   Crennel said Monday that he hopes changing the quarterback “will get everybody’s attention and hopefully that impacts the team.” Cassel had committed 14 turnovers in the first five games of the season. He was completing just 58.5 percent of his passes for 230 yards per game.

Giants beat Cardinals 6-1 to force NLCS Game 7

Sports

October 22nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ryan Vogelsong struck out a career-best nine in another postseason gem and the San Francisco Giants forced a decisive Game 7 in the NL championship series with a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. Marco Scutaro hit a two-run double and Buster Posey drove in his first run of the series with a groundout in the first inning as San Francisco struck early to support Vogelsong. Matt Cain will start for the Giants against Kyle Lohse in Game 7 tonight (Monday night). Lohse won their Game 3 matchup.

Allen Craig hit an RBI single in the sixth for the Cardinals. Craig shifted from first base to left field in place of injured Matt Holliday, a late scratch with lower back tightness. The Giants have won five straight games this postseason when facing elimination.

Nittany Lions Roll Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Bill Belton ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns and surging Penn State throttled Iowa 38-14 on Saturday night for its fifth straight win.

Matt McGloin threw for 289 yards and a pair of TDs for the Nittany Lions, who beat the Hawkeyes in Iowa City for the first time in 13 years.

Penn State (5-2, 3-0) took the suspense of this matchup between previously-unbeaten Big Ten teams by storming out to a 24-0 lead at halftime. The Nittany Lions scored again just 27 seconds into the second half to go ahead 31-0.

James Vandenberg threw for 189 yards for Iowa (4-3, 2-1). The Hawkeyes were held to just 209 yards of offense and tacked on a pair of late touchdowns that made the final score seem much closer than the game ever really was.
