DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Dayton scored 21-second-half points to pull away from defending Pioneer Football League champion Drake in a 28-13 victory on Saturday. Dan Jacob rushed for two touchdowns for the Flyers (5-5, 4-3). Drake (6-3, 5-1) turned the ball over three times in its first league loss this season. The game was tied at 7 at halftime, and Drake trailed 14-13 early in the fourth quarter after Cam Bohnert’s second field goal. Dayton led 21-13 with 9:38 remaining after Robert Washington’s 3-yard run and put it away with a 14-play, 67-yard drive consumed 8 minutes, 19 seconds. Jacob accounted for 41 yards on eight carries, including a third-down run in which he broke three tackles to convert the first down. He scored from the 5 with 1:09 left. Dayton outrushed Drake 118 to 17 and proved more efficient on third down, converting 7 of 15 to Drake’s 3 of 17.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Landry Jones threw for 405 yards and a season-high four touchdowns and No. 14 Oklahoma beat Iowa State 35-20 on Saturday, moving coach Bob Stoops into a second-place tie with Bud Wilkinson on the Sooners’ career win list. Stoops posted his 145th victory with Oklahoma. He is 12 wins shy of tying Barry Switzer for the most in school history. Brennan Clay ran for a career-best 157 yards as the Sooners bounced back from a loss to Notre Dame. Oklahoma (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) has won 20 straight following a defeat in the regular season. Jones’s 20-yard TD pass to Jalen Saunders to open the second half put the Sooners up 21-6. Oklahoma racked up 593 yards of offense, and put it away when Jones’ 31-yard TD pass to Kenny Stills made it 35-13 with 10:59 left.

Chiefs have week to regroup after another loss

Sports

November 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have played nearly 500 minutes over eight games and overtime, and so far they have yet to hold the lead in regulation for a single second. That’s the startling reality for a team picked by some to win the AFC West this season. There have been devastating injuries to key players, including concussions to both quarterbacks. Their top wide receiver held out during training camp, their star running back has struggled and the defense hasn’t stopped much of anybody.

The result is a 1-7 record that has led to fans paying for banners to fly over the stadium pleading for the general manager to be fired, and an organized protest on tap for an upcoming home game in which fans are planning to come dressed in black.

Indiana looking for some Big Ten momentum

Sports

November 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — If the Iowa Hawkeyes want to have any chance of contending for the Big Ten Legends Division, Saturday’s game at Indiana is practically a must-win. The same goes for the Hoosiers if they want to have a chance to play for a Big Ten title in December. Neither the Hoosiers (3-5, 1-3 Big Ten) nor the Hawkeyes (4-4, 2-2) are happy with the way they are playing.

Iowa has lost two straight and is coming off a 28-17 loss to Northwestern where they also lost running back Mark Weisman to a leg injury. The Hoosiers, on the other hand, are coming off their first Big Ten when since 2010.

Pheasant Hunter Success on Opening Weekend tied to Location

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

November 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says hunter success in Iowa’s 2012 pheasant season opener followed what the roadside survey predicted. Officials say better bird numbers were found in northwest Iowa,  and few birds were seen in southern Iowa, but by and large, conservation officers found hunters were encouraged, but not satisfied, with their opening weekend hunt.

Mark Gulick, northwest Iowa district wildlife supervisor for the DNR, says “The general consensus is that the opener was good compared to the past few years. Pressure on public land was moderate to extremely high on Saturday and considerably lower on Sunday. Harvest was fair to good; many groups reported about one bird per person with several groups reporting limits, some by mid morning.” Success was not as good in southeast Iowa.

Rick Trine, central Iowa district wildlife supervisor for the DNR, says in central Iowa, more hunters were on public wildlife areas and most were pleased with the numbers of pheasants they saw over last year. Iowa’s pheasant season continues through Jan. 10, 2013.
