Iowa uses new system for boat registrations

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials are using a new system for organizing boat registrations in the state. The state Department of Natural Resources says a boat’s registration information, title and decals will be on one document. Registrations will be handled in the county where the boat owner resides. Nonresidents can register in the county where the boat primarily will be used.

Officials encourage owners to bring in their current registration for a renewal, since it includes information that’s needed in the new system. That includes the boat’s make, model, model year, hull identification number, length and width. About 235,000 boats will be registered in April. Registrations are good for three years.

Motte not cleared to throw, may need surgery

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte faces reconstructive elbow surgery if his condition does not improve in the next three weeks or so. Motte, who had a career-high 42 saves last season, has been shut down since late March because of a strained right elbow. He was not cleared to throw after an MRI exam Tuesday didn’t show sufficient improvement.

General manager John Mozeliak said the team should have a good idea by early May whether the 30-year-old Motte would be able to pitch this season. The news comes a day after stand-in closer Mitchell Boggs was charged with six earned runs in one-third of an inning in the Cincinnati Reds’ nine-run ninth inning.

Lynn strikes out 10 as Cardinals top Reds 5-1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn struck out 10 in six sharp innings and rookie Matt Adams connected for his first career pinch-hit homer as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 on Tuesday night. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (1-1) retired the first 15 batters. The Cardinals broke through in the sixth, with Adams hitting a two-run homer and Allen Craig and Carlos Beltran also driving in runs.

St. Louis bounced back nicely a day after the Reds roughed up the bullpen for nine runs in the ninth inning of a 13-4 rout that made for a sour home opener. Brandon Phillips had a sacrifice fly and Shin-Soo Choo had two hits for Cincinnati. The Reds were held to five hits, ending a run of four consecutive games with double-figure hit totals. Choo has four straight two-hit games.

Reds’ 9-run ninth spoils Cardinals’ home opener

Sports

April 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brandon Phillips kick-started a nine-run ninth inning with a tiebreaking bloop double and Shin-Soo Choo made amends for two botched fly balls with a three-run double, and the Cincinnati Reds spoiled the St. Louis Cardinals’ home opener with a 13-4 victory on Monday. Mitchell Boggs (0-1), the stand-in closer for St. Louis, yielded six runs while getting only one out and the Cardinals needed four more pitchers to get out of the inning. Only a few thousand fans remained of the largest regular-season crowd of 47,375 for the bottom of the ninth in 8-year-old Busch Stadium history. The defending NL Central champions Cardinals held a tribute for Stan Musial before the game.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior forward Hallie Christofferson has been named an honorable mention All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Christofferson, a Hamlin, Iowa native, had a breakout season for the Cyclones, leading the team with 15.6 points to go along with 6.7 rebounds per game. Christofferson, one of four players unanimously selected to the All-Big 12 First Team, shot 51.6 percent from the field, 40.1 percent from behind the arc and 86.2 percent from the free-throw line, all of which led the team. She scored in double figures in 28 of 33 games, including 11 games with 20 or more points.

Earlier in the week, Christofferson took home the same honor from The Associated Press.
