PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Erik Kratz hit a three-run home run to break the game open in the eighth inning and lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. Mike Adams (1-1) tossed a scoreless eighth inning to help the Phillies split the four-game series. The Phillies snapped a 3-3 tie with a four-run eighth that put the game away. Michael Young extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single off reliever Mitchell Boggs (0-2). Dom Brown singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Ben Revere made it 4-3 on a go-ahead single up the middle. Kratz then hit the first pitch deep into the left-field seats for a three-run homer and a 7-3 lead.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Fifteen spring practices give college coaches a chance to develop and feel out what their team will be. The last of those practices for the Iowa State football team was held Saturday in Jack Trice Stadium. Players switched sides throughout the scrimmage, highlighting the competition for playing time.

Eleven starters from last year’s bowl loss return for Iowa State, which is trying to reach its fourth bowl game in five seasons under coach Paul Rhoads. Saturday afternoon gave an early look at the team’s running back corps — a group that’s impressed the Iowa State coaching staff and appears to be a strength.

DeVondrick Nealy — a 5-foot-10, 183-pound sophomore — had a game-high 18 carries and 142 yards, scoring touchdowns with the first- and second-team offenses. Junior college transfer Aaron Wimberly, a 5-foot-9 speedster, had 15 carries for 89 yards and was targeted several occasions for pass plays.

Halladay Tosses Gem, Phillies Down Cards

Sports

April 20th, 2013 by admin

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Roy Halladay tossed a two-hitter over seven innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 Friday night in a rain-shortened game to snap a four-game losing streak.

Halladay (2-2) allowed two runs, walked two and struck out six to record a complete game. He’s had consecutive strong outings after starting the season with two poor ones. The two-time Cy Young Award winner is coming off an injury-plagued, subpar year, but has looked like his old self this week.

Jimmy Rollins, Ben Revere, Humberto Quintero and John Mayberry Jr. each had two hits for the Phillies, who busted out of their slump with five runs off Jaime Garcia (1-1) in the first inning.

Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday hit solo homers for the Cardinals.

The game was called after a 35-minute rain delay before the bottom of the seventh.

Harlan Athletic Ad sponsorship unauthorized

News, Sports

April 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Harlan Community School District say there are calls being circulated with regard for advertising on athletic posters. Athletic Director Mitch Osborn said in a press release a man by the name of “John Pennington,” is calling businesses to sponsor a poster of athletic schedules. Pennington contacted our sister station KNOD in Harlan on Tuesday, about purchasing an ad on the poster.

Osborn says the school has a partnership with the Harlan Newspaper and it is the only school sponsored athletic poster and schedule. The paper then contributes back to the school programs.
