(Radio Iowa) – A fire in northeast Iowa has destroyed the boyhood home of the world-famous Ringling Brothers. Someone walking by the rural McGregor home discovered the fire yesterday (Thursday) morning. Officials say the structure was fully-engulfed by the time crews arrived and the consider the house a total loss. A mother and two kids who lived in the home escaped uninjured, along with their three dogs.
The Ringling Brothers and their only sister lived out part of their childhood in the home along the Mississippi River from 1860 to 1873. The family eventually moved to Wisconsin, where five of the seven brothers started a small circus in Baraboo. Charles and John Ringling would later purchase a competing circus founded by P.T. Barnum and James Bailey.
The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus became known as “The Greatest Show on Earth” and operated for 98 years before closing in 2017.
The Atlantic boys basketball team opens the new season under a new head coach and a number of new faces on the court. Derek Hall takes over the reigns from Jeff Ebling who moved on to coach at Indianola. Hall has been with the program for several years as an assistant and now moves to the head coaching role. Coach Hall said his familiarity with the team has helped the transition.
Some key seniors will need to be replaced from last year. Skyler Handlos averaged 16.7 points per game and Grant Sturm and Ethan Williams each averaged 8 per contest. Dayton Templeton will be one of the returners leaned on this season. He’s coming off a 10 point per game average as a junior and he said he’s ready for the challenge and the team has been coming together well.
Ethan Sturm is another senior that will look to help lead the team. Ethan struggled through some injuries last year but had some big shots for the Trojans. He is looking forward to getting out there.
Caden Andersen and Colton Rasmussen are a couple of guys that will have elevated roles this year. Coach Hall said it’s just a group that loves to play.
The Trojans open the season tonight on the road against Hawkeye Ten foe Glenwood.
