Atlantic welcomes in 3A #1 Harlan on Friday

Sports

September 30th, 2021 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans (1-4, 0-1) get to stay home this week after back to back road trips but they will face a very tough test from the Class 3A #1 ranked Harlan Cyclones (5-0, 1-0). The Trojans are coming off a very tough week in a number of ways. The team has been mourning the loss of a teammates father and then had the game last week against ADM end early after a scary injury to Garrett McLaren that stopped play late in the third quarter. Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer said the team has handled everything very well, all things considered, and it’s been a good week of practice. McLaren is doing well and has been back at school and around his teammates.

The Trojans this week will try to slow down a high powered offensive attack from the Cyclones. Quarterback Teagon Kasperbauer has thrown for 1,130 yards and 16 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions. Aidan Hall has picked up the rushing work for the Cyclones and has scored 8 times on the ground. Coach Brummer said quickness is an overwhelming theme from the Cyclones.

Harlan the past couple of seasons has thrown the ball around more than is traditional for their very successful program. Coach Brummer said he sees it as them just playing to the strengths of their personnel.

Atlantic had some early success against ADM last week by taking the ball away two times. Coach Brummer said that has been a continued point of emphasis for the team is to try to take the ball away and play good assignment football. The offense has been inconsistent but has played well in small stretches.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and the Cyclones with a video only broadcast on KJANTV. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the coverage with pregame at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:00 p.m. You can hear a full interview with Coach Brummer on Trojan Preview on KJAN at 4:45 p.m. leading into our coverage of Iowa Hawkeye Football. Due to the Iowa game being on the radio our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? will air at 4:15 p.m. instead of 6:00 p.m.

Ohio company to bid to manage care for Iowa Medicaid program

News

September 30th, 2021 by admin

(Radio Iowa) An Ohio-based company called CareSource plans to submit a bid to be among the private companies managing Iowa’s Medicaid program. In 2016, the State of Iowa switched to privately managed care of Medicaid, which currently covers health care costs for 750-thousand poor, elderly and disabled Iowans. Two companies — Amerigroup and Iowa Total Care — have existing contracts to manage care for those Iowans. CareSource, based in Dayton, Ohio, has rented office space in Des Moines and hiring Iowa staff, preparing to submit the paperwork for an Iowa Medicaid managed care contract. State officials likely will decide next fall if another company will be added to Iowa Medicaid’s program. CareSource already oversees Medicaid coverage for residents in five other states.

Realtors survey shows Iowa farm land values up 26.6% since last fall

September 30th, 2021 by admin

A survey of real estate agents finds the price of tillable Iowa farm land is increasing significantly. The Iowa chapter of the Realtors Land Institute releases survey data in March and September. The latest report shows Iowa farm land values have jumped nearly 19 percent since the spring. Compared to a year ago, the average price for Iowa farm land is up 26-point-six percent. The Realtors Land Institute cites high commodity prices, a good harvest and favorable interest rates as factors driving up farm land prices. The group reports farmers are the primary buyers, but investors are very competitive at public auctions of farm land. Farm land prices are rising throughout the corn belt. According to the Chicago Federal Reserve, the dollar value of good Iowa farm land rose 18 percent between July of this year and last July.
