Wigginton, Cardinals agree to $5M, 2-year contract

Sports

December 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Free agent infielder Ty Wigginton and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a $5 million, two-year contract. General manager John Mozeliak announced the agreement Friday and said Wigginton gives the Cardinals a right-handed bat “with punch.” The 35-year-old Wigginton, who will make $2.5 million annually, has hit 15 or more homers six times during 11 big league seasons. He had 22 in 2010, when he was an All-Star with Baltimore.

Wigginton has a .263 career average with 169 home runs and 591 RBIs in 1,315 games with the New York Mets (2002-04), Pittsburgh (2004-05), Tampa Bay (2006-07), Houston (2007-08), Baltimore (2009-10), Colorado (2011) and Philadelphia (2012). He has played 100 or more games in each of the past seven seasons. He can earn additional performance bonuses.

Morningside of Iowa loses NAIA championship game 30-27

Sports

December 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ROME, Ga. (AP) — Michael Josifovski made a 35-yard field goal on the final play of regulation to force overtime and hit a 26-yarder in the extra session to give Marian, Indiana a 30-27 victory over Morningside of Iowa in the NAIA championship game Thursday night. Marian (12-1) won its first national title in only its sixth season of football. In the semifinals, Josifovski made a 51-yard field goal on the final play for a 20-17 victory over Missouri Valley College.

Joel Nixon was 22 of 39 for 228 yards and two touchdowns for Morningside (13-1), and Fred Jones ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Nixon also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in Rome, Georgia.

Bowe’s injury further opens WR void for Chiefs

Sports

December 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have been having enough problems moving the ball through the air with their best wide receiver getting the most attention from opposing defenses. Imagine the difficulty they’ll have on Sunday against Oakland. The Chiefs will be without Dwayne Bowe for the immediate future, and perhaps the rest of the season, because of a ribs injury he sustained last Sunday against Cleveland. That means a group of wide receivers who have been unproductive at best will need to step up their game.

Former first-round pick Jon Baldwin still has not made an impact in the NFL, and veteran Steve Breaston hasn’t even been active the last several games, creating more underlying tension in an organization that has dealt with plenty of problems this season.

Griswold’s Young Named To Elite XC Academic All-State Team

Sports

December 13th, 2012 by Jim Field

Allison Young, daughter of Jon and Beth Young of Elliott, was named to the Iowa Cross-Country All-State team. The honor is reserved for high school seniors who have a grade point of 3.8 or above, an ACT score of 28 or higher, and qualified for the state meet or placed in the top 30 at regionals during their senior season.

Young, a senior at Griswold High School, has run on the Lady Tigers cross-country team since her freshman year. She qualified for three teams. An injury side-lined the stand-out runner her entire sophomore season.

“Allison has joined a very elite group of athletes. The standards for the award are very high. Allison does her absolute best at whatever task she undertakes whether it is in the classroom or on the cross-country course. She is a model of what it means to a student athlete,” shares Jane Chaillie, Griswold cross-country coach.

In addition, Young earned Western Iowa Conference Academic All-Conference honors. Joining her as WIC academic honorees were teammates Jordyn Sindt, Larissa Backhaus, Serena Robinette, Xavier Olivo, Mason Anstey, Joe Sampson, and Dillon Bechtol.
