ISU RB Johnson out for Liberty Bowl

Sports

December 16th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State running back Shontrelle Johnson will miss the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 against Tulsa with a knee injury. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads says Johnson injured his right knee making a cut during practice on Saturday. Rhoads says Johnson likely will have surgery in January. Johnson started six games this season. He leads Iowa State (6-6) with 504 yards rushing.

Iowa State likely will start James White against Tulsa (10-3). White rushed for 469 yards on 5.3 yards per carry this season. Johnson’s injury also could open up more playing time for backup Jeff Woody.

ISU QB Richardson adjusts to being starter

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s decision to play freshman quarterback Sam Richardson in the final two games of the regular season resulted in a win, a loss and a lot of hope for the future. Now Richardson has the chance to grow some more. Iowa State (6-6) earned a berth in the Liberty Bowl against Tulsa (10-3), giving Richardson more time to increase his familiarity with the rest of the starting offense. The Cyclones say the experience from playing in a pair of games and working as the starter in practice is already paying off. Richardson says he’s been able to mold his game to fit the rest of the starters in practice.

Chiefs Send Bowe to IR

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have put wide receiver Dwayne Bowe on injured reserve with hurt ribs, ending his season and potentially his career in Kansas City.

The Chiefs’ leading receiver had already been ruled out of Sunday’s game at Oakland.

Bowe was playing this season on a $9.5 million deal as the team’s franchise player, and it’s possible the two sides could agree on a new deal or the Chiefs could franchise him again.

Bowe wasn’t happy getting the tag last season, though. He refused to sign his tender until well into training camp, forcing him to play catch-up at the start of the year.

Bowe, who hurt his ribs last Sunday at Cleveland, has 59 catches for 801 yards and three of the Chiefs’ eight touchdown catches this season.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Junior Melvin Ejim notched his 11th career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds as Iowa State beat Drake 86-77 Saturday in a contest marred by fouls.

Ejim returned to the starting lineup after one game off the bench and responded with his fourth double-double of the season to lead the Cyclones (8-3).

Drake (4-5) was down six with 3:13 left when Iowa State’s Will Clyburn stole a pass under the Bulldogs basket for a decisive dunk and three-point play.

Clyburn finished with 17 points and 10 boards.

Seth VanDeest had 18 points to lead the Bulldogs, who committed four straight turnovers down the stretch and had 31 of the game’s astounding 52 fouls.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Devyn Marble scored a season-high 30 points as Iowa beat Northern Iowa 80-73 Saturday in the inaugural Big Four Classic.

Freshman Mike Gesell added a career-best 23 points for the Hawkeyes (9-2), who have won four in a row after a brief two-game skid in late November.

Iowa buried a season-high nine 3-pointers in the first half alone, jumping ahead 40-32. The Panthers stayed within a few possessions for much of the second half but couldn’t quite erase Iowa’s lead.

Deon Mitchell had 23 points to lead Northern Iowa (6-4), whose losses have come against Louisville, Stanford, Memphis and the Hawkeyes.
