CARROL JEAN SPARKMAN, 75, of Greenfield (formerly of Poplar Bluff, MO.), died in Aug. 2021, at her home in Greenfield. Graveside services for CARROL JEAN SPARKMAN will be held at a later date in the Sparkman Cemetery, in Butler County, Missouri. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Iowa hosts Penn State

(Radio Iowa) – Third ranked Iowa looks to stay unbeaten by hosting fourth ranked Penn State, today (Saturday). The Iowa defense has forced 16 turnovers already this season but coach Kirk Ferentz says a Nittany Lion offense led by quarterback Sean Clifford will be a challenge.

Ferentz says while the build up to the game is fun it still comes down to performance.

Ferentz says no matter what the outcome there is still half of the regular season yet to play.

We’ll have the pre-game for today’s action at 1-p.m., followed by the kick-off from Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, at 3-p.m., on KJAN.

CAM races past Coon Rapids-Bayard

The CAM Cougars were a well oiled machine on Friday night in an 82-22 win over Coon Rapids-Bayard. The Cougars racked up a unbelievable 54 points in the first quarter and led 54-14 at the end of one. That lead would balloon to 74-14 by halftime, and the second half melted away quickly with the running clock in place and both teams mainly keeping the ball on the ground.

The Cougars scored on every possession of the first half and Lane Spieker led the way with another banner night. Spieker racked up 6 touchdowns on the ground, threw for another, and ran a punt back 45 yards for a score. Cade Ticknor added two rushing touchdowns and Gabe Rouse had the final score on the ground for the Cougars. CAM Head Coach Barry Bower was impressed with how well everyone blocked in the run game.

After the game Spieker gave a lot of credit as well to the guys paving the way.

Coon Rapids-Bayard scored on two long passing plays in the first quarter. Tanner Oswald hooked up with Easton Hays for 59-yard and 65-yard scores. Their other touchdown came from Omarion Floyd on a 12 yard run with 1:14 left in the game.

CAM improves to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in 8-Man District 10. The Cougars finish off the regular season next week with a visit to Boyer Valley. Coach Bower hopes that his team is ready to finish strong.

Coon Rapids-Bayard falls to 3-4 on the season overall and 1-4 in District 10. The Crusaders finish up next week by hosting Exira-EHK.

JUDITH ANN SHANNO, 87, of Bellevue, NE (an Oakland, IA native), died Thursday, Oct. 7th, at the Hillcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bellevue, NE. A Memorial Visitation for JUDY SHANNO will be held from 5-until 7:30-p.m. on Oct. 19th, at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home, in Oakland.

JUDITH ANN SHANNO is survived by:

Her daughters -Joanne (Steve) Dau, and Nancy Shanno, all of Omaha, NE

Her sons – Jim (Tonya) Shanno, and Mark (Anne) Shanno, all of Omaha, NE.

Her sisters – Linda King, of Hancock, Ia, & Karen Sorensen, of Calumet, OK.

Governor Reynolds sets special session for redistricting

(Des Moines) – Governor Kim Reynolds today (Friday) signed a proclamation convening a special legislative session on Thursday, October 28, 2021. The purpose of the special session will be to consider and enact a plan of legislative and congressional redistricting in accordance with the framework set forth in chapter 42 of the Iowa Code.

Fall armyworms marching through Iowa pastures, even lawn

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa State University Extension Service is getting reports of a pest that’s damaging hay fields, pastures and even some lawns. Gentry Sorenson, an I-S-U Extension field agronomist based in northwest Iowa, says it’s a caterpillar known as the fall armyworm. “The fall armyworm basically blew up as a moth from Florida and the Gulf Coast area through the hurricane winds,” he says. “The armyworm that we’re seeing is the rice strain and that strain of fall armyworm particularly feeds on alfalfa and forage grasses.” The fall armyworm can grow to be up to an inch and a half long.

Sorenson says farmers can use an insecticide if the bugs are causing a lot of damage.  “The best times to scout for fall armyworm are early mornings or late in the evenings,” he says, “mainly because the fall armyworm is more of a noctural pest and they come out at night and do a lot of feeding at night or when it’s cooler.”

Sorenson says some parts of southern Iowa have been hit hard by fall armyworm infestations that drifted here due to winds from Hurricane Ida, but even farmers in northwest Iowa are starting to see the pest in their fields. The bugs flourish in warm climates, according to Sorenson.

“So once we see the hard freeze, it will essentially wipe out the fall armyworm population,” he says. The rice strain of the fall armyworm is found primarily in the southeast United States and cannot survive the mild winter in Alabama according to that state’s Extension Service. The bug is known to feed on crops like rye, wheat and oats as well as rice and various grasses.
