Official expects group to order brain injury class for coaches

Sports

February 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An official with a state athletic association says its board will vote next month on a requirement that coaches pass a course dealing with recognizing the signs of traumatic brain injuries. Alan Beste, the assistant executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, told legislators Thursday that the group’s board will likely adopt a rule next month requiring that each year, coaches must pass a course focused on recognizing the signs of brain injuries, including concussions. Student-athletes with such injuries would be removed from play. The rule would apply to coaches of seventh to 12th grade teams.

The rule would take effect in time for the upcoming school year. A House education subcommittee was studying the issue. Legislators opted to not take action if the association approves its rule.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Karisma Penn scored 18 points, Adrienne GodBold and Amber Moore added 17 apiece, and Illinois closed with a 14-2 run over the final 5:11 to knock off No. 24 Iowa 74-62 on Thursday night. Penn pulled down eight rebounds for the Illini (12-8, 5-3 Big Ten), whose last victory over Iowa in Champaign was Feb. 9, 2003. Ivory Crawford chipped in 14 points to help Illinois surpass its win total from the 2011-12 season. Samantha Logic had 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Hawkeyes (16-6, 5-3) but also committed eight of Iowa’s 27 turnovers. Illinois converted those turnovers into 30 points.

What had been a back-and-forth game swung the Illini’s way after Iowa’s Jaime Printy tied it at 60 with a layup with 5:31 to go. The Hawkeyes wouldn’t score again until Kayla Timmerman’s jumper with 13 seconds left, after Illinois had reeled off 14 unanswered points.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa and Nebraska want to continue playing each other on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Iowa athletic director Gary Barta and Shawn Eichorst, his counterpart at Nebraska, will ask the Big Ten to honor their request when an administrative council meets later next month. The Hawkeyes and Huskers are currently slated to meet on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2013 and 2014, but they want to push those matchups up a day. Iowa is set to travel to Lincoln this fall, with Nebraska playing in Iowa City in 2014. The schools began their annual series when the Huskers joined the Big Ten for the 2011 season. Nebraska has won each of those meetings.

Chad Christensen signs his national letter of intent to play baseball at NIACC as his family and future coach look on.

Atlantic senior Chad Christensen signed a national letter of intent this (Thursday) morning to play baseball at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.  Christensen says he looked at several programs during the recruiting process but that he loved the campus, the school and the baseball program at NIACC.

Christensen says baseball has always been his passion since little league, but playing other sports have helped him develop his leadership and team skills.

Travis Hergert is the first year coach at NIACC after serving eight years as an assistant in the program.  He says they have watched Chad in high school and Perfect Game spring and fall leagues.  Hergert says Chad has a chance to enter a program that can help him reach his goals and where he ecpects Christensen to make an impact at NIACC.

NIACC had a 37-21 record last season and sent 8 players to four year schools, including six to division one programs.  Chad says that getting an opportunity down the road to play at a division one school is his goal.

Chad’s parents Rod & Ruth, Chad and NIACC baseball coach Travis Hergert.

Christensen will be a five year letter winner after his senior season this summer as a five year starter at shortstop.  He helped the Trojans to a 19-11 record last year.

Oklahoma State edges Iowa State 78-76

Sports

January 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Marcus Smart scored 21 points and hit the winning layup with 3.1 seconds left to lift Oklahoma State to a 78-76 victory against Iowa State on Wednesday night. Smart zipped back and forth beyond the free throw line trying to lose Iowa State’s Will Clyburn before knifing into the lane and releasing a runner over Georges Niang that banked off the glass and in for the Cowboys (14-5, 4-3 Big 12).

Tyrus McGee missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Cyclones (14-6, 4-3), who had two chances in a wild final few seconds. For a moment, it appeared Chris Babb would have a chance at two free throws to tie it up with less than a second left before officials huddled and ruled that Iowa State should instead get the ball out of bounds. Babb ended up with a season-high 19 points to lead Iowa State.
