James helps Northern Iowa top Missouri State 48-37

Sports

February 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Anthony James scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Jake Koch added 11 points and Northern Iowa held Missouri State to 27 percent shooting en route to a 48-37 victory Tuesday night. The Panthers (13-11, 6-6 Missouri Valley) shot just 40 percent as a team, but that was enough to beat the cold-shooting Bears (7-17, 5-7). UNI’s Marc Sonnen, whose 48.3 percent 3-point shooting percentage ranked third in Division I entering the game, was just 1 of 6 from long range.

Anthony Downing led the Bears with nine points and seven rebounds. The 37 points were Missouri State’s lowest ever in an MVC game. Missouri State led 29-26 after Christian Kirk’s jumper with 11:29 to play, but Northern Iowa came alive after that, outscoring the Bears 22-8 the rest of the way. Sonnen’s 3-pointer with 2:35 left made it 43-33 and effectively sealed the win.

Cardinals RHP Chris Carpenter Likely Out for ’13

Sports

February 5th, 2013 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chris Carpenter is unlikely to pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals this season and his career may be over because of a nerve injury that kept him out most of last year.

General manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that Carpenter has renewed numbness and some bruising in his right shoulder and hand. He will get an additional medical evaluation, but Mozeliak says Carpenter is unlikely to pitch again.

Carpenter had surgery in July for the nerve injury and returned to pitch three games down the stretch and three in the postseason.

Carpenter is 37 and is considered one of the best clutch pitchers in Cardinals history. He is 144-94 for his career and 10-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 postseason starts.

Iowa’s Campbell leaves program

Sports

February 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says wide receivers coach Erik Campbell has left the Hawkeyes staff. Ferentz also says D.J. Hernandez has joined his staff as a graduate assistant. He replaces David Raih, who left for a job at Texas Tech. Ferentz didn’t elaborate on the departure of Campbell, who had been with the program since 2008, other than to say Campbell wants to pursue other opportunities. But Iowa’s passing game struggled mightily in 2012, as quarterback James Vandenberg threw just seven TD passes in 12 games.

Hernandez, the brother of New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, played wide receiver and quarterback at Connecticut. He spent one season at Brown before joining the Hurricanes in 2011. Ferentz says Hernandez with work with the team’s tight ends.
