Bye-Bye “Trojann’s”?

Sports

February 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic Community School District’s Board of Education may vote next month on eliminating a long-time element of the district’s mascot. A-H-S Student Council President Jake Auerbach appeared before the Board Monday evening to ask for the elimination of the “Trojann’s” and simply keeping the name “Trojans.”  The request comes on the heels of a student survey, during which a majority favored the move. The conversation was also extended to the community and businesses. Auerbach says from that he’s only received comments from three people who oppose the idea.

The Trojann’s nickname would be phased out as new athletic attire is ordered. The majority of those nicknames are found on uniforms worn by the softball team. There is also a Trojann’s nickname on the Middle School gymnasium floor. The floor is scheduled to be refinished in June or July, therefore Superintendent Dr. Michael Amstein suggested a formal recommendation be presented to the Board by Athletic Director Josh Rasmussen for approval, during their next regular meeting in March.

Chiefs sign 3 as they build roster depth

Sports

February 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed wide receiver Mardy Gilyard, tight end Kevin Brock and defensive end Marcus Dixon on Monday as they attempt to build depth at the bottom of their roster. Kansas City was particularly thin at wide receiver last year, and with the prospect of losing Dwayne Bowe to free agency, new general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid are searching for players who could compete for roster spots next season. Gilyard would fit that mold. He’s a former fourth-round draft pick out of Cincinnati who spent last season with the Jets and Eagles, so Reid has some familiarity with him. Brock appeared in two games two years ago with Buffalo, while Dixon played in 22 games over the past three seasons for the Jets.

Cardinals baseball News….

February 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter hasn’t ruled out pitching again, including this year. The 37-year-old Carpenter met with reporters at Busch Stadium on Monday as pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Jupiter, Fla. Last week, the team all but ruled him out for this year after problems in his right arm. Carpenter is entering the second year of a two-year, $21 million contract and said he owed it the organization to keep trying. But after undergoing an eighth surgery last season, he said there would not be a ninth. Carpenter knew something was wrong a few weeks ago when his hand turned red and purple and was aching soon after he began throwing from a mound.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Mike Matheny pulled into a parking lot at spring training at 5:30 a.m. Monday, anxious to start his second season as the St. Louis Cardinals manager. He was joined by several pitchers and catchers, one day before the mandatory reporting day in Jupiter, Fla. Matheny says he was impressed by the turnout, which included Yadier Molina and pitchers Adam Wainwright and Jake Westbrook. The Cardinals are coming off a season in which they lost in Game 7 of the NLCS to San Francisco after building a 3-1 series lead. They have since learned that veteran starter Chris Carpenter likely will not pitch this season after experiencing pain in his right arm.
