Hawkeye Women Stun Hoosiers 75-70 Thursday

Sports

March 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team knew its challenge with two regular season games remaining. The Hawkeyes entered Senior Night on Thursday sitting with 17 wins and knowing that 19 looks a heck of a lot better to the NCAA Selection Committee than 17 or 18. They came away with a come-from-behind 75-70 victory against Indiana on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

On a night when the UI program honored seniors Morgan Johnson, Trisha Nesbitt, and Jaime Printy, a sophomore sharpshooter came off the bench to score a team-high 22 points and help dig the Hawkeyes out of an 18-point hole. Melissa Dixon made 5-of-13 3-point field goals — four coming in the first half — as she all but cemented the Big Ten Conference Sixth Player of the Year Award. Iowa outscored the Hoosiers 22-0 in bench points, and all 22 came from Dixon.

The Hawkeyes wrap up the regular season Sunday at Northwestern (13-15, 5-10) with a 2 p.m. (CT) tip. The Wildcats stunned Iowa 67-65 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 3. Northwestern lost 55-50 at Michigan on Feb. 28.

Beltran, Westbrook hurt as Cards beat Miami 8-2

Sports

February 28th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Carlos Beltran and Jake Westbrook limped to the St. Louis Cardinals’ clubhouse moments apart Thursday. Beltran bruised the little toe on his right foot when he was hit by a pitch in the first inning of the Cardinals’ 8-2 victory over the Miami Marlins. Westbrook bruised his left leg below the knee on a grounder hit by Casey Kotchman in the second inning.

Beltran’s X-rays were negative, but he said the injury was painful, and he was unsure whether it would affect his plans to play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Westbrook didn’t undergo X-rays. Westbrook faced six batters and allowed four hits, including an RBI triple by Giancarlo Stanton. Cardinals non-roster invitee Oscar Taveras hit a grand slam off Marlins starter Justin Turner.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Pitcher Jake Westbrook has left the St. Louis Cardinals’ game against the Miami Marlins with a bruised left knee and outfielder Carlos Beltran has departed with a bruised right toe. Westbrook was hit on the leg by a grounder hit by Casey Kotchman leading off the second inning Thursday. The right-hander consulted with a trainer and flexed his left leg before walking to the dugout.

Beltran was hit by a pitch in the first and left the game after the inning. X-rays were negative. Westbrook was making his first start of spring training. He went 13-11 last year but didn’t pitch after Sept. 8 because of a strained right oblique. He gave up one run in the first inning on an RBI triple by Giancarlo Stanton.

Iowa State students apologize to Kansas coach Self

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self says the Iowa State student government sent him a letter apologizing for a pair of incidents that occurred during the Jayhawks’ overtime victory over the Cyclones on Monday night. The sixth-ranked Jayhawks rallied in the closing minutes to force overtime before rolling to a 108-96 victory that left the crowd at Hilton Coliseum stunned.

The first incident occurred after Self gave a brief postgame TV interview. When it was over, an Iowa State fan had to be held back by security when he charged after Self. The second incident occurred on Twitter, where at least two fans made racist and threatening comments directed toward the Jayhawks’ Elijah Johnson, who scored 39 points in the game. Self said he accepted the apology.

Lolo Jones says she’s committed to a second season with the U.S. bobsled team, one that will give her a chance to compete in the Sochi Olympics.  Jones tells The Associated Press that she got “completely engulfed” with the sport this season, her first in sliding. The two-time Olympic hurdler is back in training for her track and field season now in Baton Rouge, La.

She left her first season as part of the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation with three medals. One was a silver medal as the brakeman for driver Jazmine Fenlator in the World Cup season-opener at Lake Placid, N.Y.  The others came in team events, a gold at the world championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland and a bronze at a World Cup stop in Igls, Austria.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Desmar Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, helping Southern Illinois to a 63-57 Senior Night victory over Northern Iowa on Wednesday. Jeff Early, who along with Kendal Brown-Surles and T.J. Lindsay was playing his final home game for the Salukis (13-16, 5-12 Missouri Valley), added 14 points and eight rebounds. The three seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony. Marc Sonnen scored 18 points for the Panthers (17-13, 10-7), and Jake Koch had 12. Northern Iowa outrebounded Southern Illinois 38-30 but committed 16 turnovers, which the Salukis turned into 17 points.

SIU never trailed but saw UNI pull within 48-43 on Marvin Singleton’s 3-pointer with 4:43 left. The Salukis then made nine free throws in the final 2:50 to secure the victory. Northern Iowa likely will be the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, while Southern Illinois is locked in at No. 10.

Iowa defeats Purdue 58-48

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Aaron White had 18 points and nine rebounds and Iowa beat Purdue 58-48 on Wednesday night for its fourth win in five games. Devyn Marble also had 18 for the Hawkeyes (18-10, 7-8 Big Ten), who put an ugly loss at Nebraska behind them ahead of this weekend’s trip to top-ranked Indiana. Iowa never trailed in avenging an overtime defeat at Purdue late last month. The Boilermakers (13-15, 6-9) got as close as 49-43, but poor shooting doomed them to their sixth loss in eight games. Iowa played without freshman starter Mike Gesell, who was out with a right foot injury. Donnie Hale had 13 points to lead Purdue, which dropped a game behind Iowa in the race for seeding for the upcoming Big Ten tournament.
