FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Zahna Medley scored 18 points and TCU upset No. 23 Iowa State 61-58 on Saturday. Delisa Gross, a senior playing in her final home game, added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench for the Horned Frogs (9-19, 2-15 Big 12), who led by as many as 16 points before Iowa State rallied. Chelsea Poppens had a game-high 13 rebounds. Iowa State fell into a second-place tie with Texas Tech in the Big 12 with one game remaining before the conference tournament next weekend in Dallas. NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Romero Osby had 22 points and nine rebounds and Oklahoma tied the NCAA record for free throws without a miss in an 86-69 victory over Iowa State on Saturday. Osby had 10 of the Sooners’ 34 free throws — which matched Samford in 1990 for most in a game without missing at the foul line.

Sam Grooms had 19 points and six assists for Oklahoma (19-9, 10-6 Big 12), which never trailed on Saturday. Steven Pledger added 14 points, Amath M’Baye scored 11 and Andrew Fitzgerald had 10 points. Oklahoma jumped to a 12-2 lead and shot 52 percent in the first half on the way to a 40-28 lead. They extended the lead to 26 at one point in the second half.

Tyrus McGee led Iowa State (19-10, 9-7) with 22 points. Babu Palo added 12 points and Melvin Ejim and Georges Niang scored 10 each for the Cyclones.

The Harlan Cyclones’ basketball team enters the championship round of the Girls State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines this evening, and their 10th chance to take home Class 4-A trophy. Previous efforts have come up short.

The 23-2 Cyclones will take on a 19-9 team from Cedar Rapids/Xavier, beginning at 6-p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. Harlan advanced to the final round with a 41-36 win over Waverly-Shell Rock, in Class 4-A.

ISU is on the road at OK this afternoon/Hawkeyes taken on #1 IN tonight

The Iowa State Cyclones (19-9, 9-6 Big 12) returns to action when it plays at Oklahoma (18-9, 9-6) this afternoon. Tip-time at the Lloyd Noble Center is 12:45-p.m. The Cyclones are coming off a crushing OT loss to Kansas, though the Big 12 has acknowledged officiating mistakes that cost Iowa State dearly in the closing seconds. The Cyclones pounded the Sooners 83-64 in Ames earlier this season.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (18-10, 7-8 Big Ten) meanwhile, look to move to .500 in the Big Ten – and boost its NCAA tournament hopes – when it plays at No. 1 Indiana (24-4, 12-3) tonight at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers beat Iowa 69-65 in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Indiana likely won’t overlook the Hawkeyes after losing at Minnesota on Wednesday. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 5:30-p.m., with tip-off at 6:30.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Joe Kelly opened his bid for a spot in the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting rotation with two hitless innings, and Adron Chambers hit a three-run homer in Friday’s 8-8 tie against the Houston Astros. Among three candidates to replace the injured Chris Carpenter in the Cards’ rotation, Kelly walked one hitter in each inning. Daniel Descalso and Pete Kozma had two hits and drove in two runs each for the Cardinals, who have won five straight.

Chris Carter homered for the Astros, a fifth-inning drive off closer Jason Motte. Brandon Barnes and Brandon Lair also homered for Houston. Houston starter Bud Norris struck out one and walked one in three innings, allowing Descalso’s two-run single in the second. With Houston trailing by two runs in the ninth, Brandon Laird homered off Victor Marte leading off and Rene Garcia singled with one out. After a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Jackson, pinch-runner Delino DeShields scored on Marte’s wild pitch.

Harlan Cyclones Advance to 4-A Girls State Championship Game

Sports

March 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A group of youngsters came through at the end Thursday for Harlan, and helped put the Cyclones in the Class 4A championship game.  Liz Riessen, the only senior on the floor for Harlan at the time, hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer on a pass from sophomore Taylor Wagner and the eighth-ranked Cyclones went on to upset No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock 41-36.  Wagner drove into the lane, found Riessen in the right corner and the 5-foot-10 senior buried the shot to give Harlan a 37-34 lead with 1:26 left. Wagner then made four of seven free throws in the final 45.9 seconds, enough for the Cyclones to hold on. Harlan is in the state tournament for the 10th time but has never won the championship. The Cyclones, now 23-2, will get their chance at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Wagner led Harlan with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Josie Esser and Jordyn Moser each scored seven points and Moser, a 5-foot-5 freshman point guard, hustled for six rebounds. During the closing minutes, with a trip to the state championship game on the line, Harlan coach Zach Klaassen trusted his team’s fortunes to Moser, Wagner, Riessen and sophomores Elle Kloewer and Jess Schaben. Schaben, a 6-foot-1 post player, gave the Cyclones a nice lift with seven rebounds and four blocks.

Aftin Phyfe led Waverly-Shell Rock with 11 points. Morgan Neuendorf added nine points for the Go-Hawks and Noami Phillips scored eight to go with 11 rebounds. Waverly-Shell Rock reached the state tournament for the first time in the five-player era and finished 21-3. Harlan led by as many as 10 points in the first half and was up 24-17 at the break. Waverly-Shell Rock then began chipping away but got the lead only once, at 31-30 on Neuendorf’s pull-up jumper in the lane at the start of the fourth quarter. Harlan regained the lead on freshman Taylor Frederick’s turnaround jumper.
