(Radio Iowa) – The State Ag Secretary says Iowa’s soybean harvest could be wrapping up very soon. The Ag Secretary’s comments come as the latest U-S-D-A crop report shows the bean harvest hit 83 percent complete by Sunday. That is up from 60 percent complete last week and six days ahead of the five-year average. The report says the southern one-third of the state lags behind in the bean harvest.

Lots of progress was made on the corn side last week as the completion rate hit 60 percent — up from 43 percent the prior week. That’s one week ahead of the five-year average. Growers in the northeast and south-central regions still have more than half of their corn remaining to be harvested.

Cardinals name Oliver “Oli” Marmol new Manager

Sports

October 25th, 2021 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS, MO. – October 25, 2021 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this morning that they have named Oliver “Oli” Marmol as the team’s manager, the 51st field manager in franchise history, and at age 35, the youngest since Marty Marion who piloted the team at age 34 in 1951.   Marmol served as the Cardinals bench coach the past three seasons (2019-21), and was the team’s first base coach from 2017-18.

“We are extremely pleased to name Oliver “Oli” Marmol as our new manager,” stated Cardinals’ Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Bill DeWitt, Jr.  “Oli is a career member of the Cardinals organization, and someone who has built excellent working relationships with our players, coaches and staff members at all levels.  We believe that he possesses strong managerial skills that will allow for the continued success of our team.”

Oli, who was born in New Jersey, and is of Dominican descent, becomes only the second minority to manage the Cardinals and the first since Cuban-born Mike González did so for parts of the 1938 and 1940 seasons.

“The entire organization felt that it was important to try and maintain the success, progress, and momentum that was built over the course of 2021 season,” said Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.  “We are excited to have Oli helping us to further grow that effort as we move forward.  Oli has always been someone that I knew would one day become a manager, and today I am pleased to join in introducing him as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.”

Marmol spent five seasons (2012-16) managing in the Cardinals farm system, leading his teams to the postseason in four of those five seasons, including the New York-Penn League title in 2014 with State College.  Marmol’s teams were a combined 268-225 (.544), posting league-best 48-win seasons in both 2013 and 2014 at State College.

In 2015, his first season managing at Palm Beach, the Cardinals reached the Florida State League’s (A) postseason for the first time since 2008 when Oli was serving as the Palm Beach second baseman.

Oli’s first managerial experience came in 2012 with Johnson City, leading the rookie-league Cardinals to a 39-28 mark and a playoff appearance.  His first coaching position was as the hitting coach with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals in 2011.

Marmol, who was drafted (6th round) by the Cardinals in 2007 as an infielder out of the College of Charleston (S.C.),  finished his four-year (2007-2010) professional playing career at Palm Beach of the Class A Florida State League.   Oli was first drafted in 2004 by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla, but chose to attend college and did not sign.

Marmol was voted the recipient of the Cardinals organization’s prestigious George Kissell Award in 2013 for excellence in player development.

Oli, and his wife, Amber, have two daughters; Riley and Kylie.

Iowans need to book holiday travel now or risk high prices, no seats

News

October 25th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Some Iowans are still trying to decide what they’ll wear to this weekend’s Halloween costume party, but one expert is urging them to think ahead to their year-end holiday travel plans and book them, pronto. Meredith Mitts, spokeswoman for Triple-A-Iowa, says the sooner you lock in your plane tickets, hotel reservations or cruise plans, the better.

“As we’re getting closer to the holidays, the cost for airfare rises and the availability shrinks,” Mitts says. “So, the farther out you can plan those flights and those items, the better chance you have of getting those ideal time slots and being able to make those plans in a cost-efficient way and get where you want to go on time.” Travel troubles, especially with airlines, have made the news lately and if you haven’t bought travel insurance in the past, Mitts says you may want to start.

“What we’ve been seeing recently is numerous flight delays or cancellations and there will be a possibility for that to happen around the holidays,” Mitts says. “Travel insurance can help protect you if there are unexpected costs, such as a hotel, transportation or food. You may also receive compensation if there is lost luggage or if your flight is delayed for as little as three hours.” A survey by the motor club finds 35-percent of Iowa respondents say they’ve already reserved their holiday trips by the end of October. So where are they going?

“Iowans are planning to go to a major city or metro — about 34% of them are going to one of those two locations, but almost half of the Iowans are going somewhere else with easy access to the great outdoors,” Mitts says. “Beach destinations, state and national parks, and resort vacations top those lists followed by land tours.” Travel was down significantly a year ago due to the pandemic, but the advent of COVID-19 vaccines has changed perceptions. Mitts says compared to last year, when the vaccine wasn’t available, 26-percent of Iowans surveyed say they’re more comfortable traveling this holiday season. Over half (56%) say they feel the same as last year. Also, more than a quarter (27%) of Iowans site a fear of contracting or spreading COVID-19 as their reason for not traveling this holiday season.

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State All-Big 12 senior quarterback Brock Purdy and All-Big 12 junior defensive end Will McDonald IV were honored by the Big 12 Conference today for their performances against Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Purdy was awarded the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and McDonald IV was the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Purdy was sensational on Saturday, guiding the Cyclones to a 24-21 win over No. 8 Oklahoma State, ISU’s fourth win over a Top 10 team since 2017.

A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Purdy passed for 307 yards, his 13th career 300-yard passing game, on 27-of-33 passing. Purdy is the only player in the nation to complete 80 pct. of his passes in a game four times (min. 15 att.).

He also tossed a pair of touchdowns to Xavier Hutchinson and helped orchestrate a fourth quarter come-from-behind victory for the seventh time in his career.

Purdy has been one of the most accurate passers in the nation this season, ranking second nationally in completion pct. at 75.3 pct. His four 80 pct. completion games all rank in ISU’s single-game Top 11.

Purdy, who has the fifth-most starts among active FBS QBs (40), is the greatest signal-caller in Cyclone history. He currently owns/shares 31 school records, including all-time QB wins (28).

A four-time career winner of the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Purdy is 14-1 vs. Big 12 opponents in his career at Jack Trice Stadium.

McDonald IV, a native of Pewaukee, Wis., is one of the best pass rushers in the nation and he continued his incredible play over the weekend with a dominating performance vs. the Cowboys.

McDonald IV tallied five tackles, 2.0 sacks, two QB hurries and a pass breakup to aid the Cyclones to victory.

With the Cyclones clinging to a 24-21 victory late in the fourth quarter, McDonald IV registered back-to-back sacks to force a Cowboy punt.

McDonald IV leads the Big 12 and ranks fourth nationally in sacks per game at 1.07. His 7.5 sacks on the year already ranks in ISU’s season Top 10 and his 25.0 sacks in his career is 0.5 shy from the school record.

McDonald IV has been the most consistent pass-rusher in the NCAA in the last two seasons, registering 23.0 sacks in his last 23 games.
