Wigginton dash boosts Cardinals past Mets 6-3

Sports

May 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn overcame early control woes and St. Louis used a three-run seventh inning to beat the New York Mets 6-3 on Monday night. Lynn (6-1) allowed three runs on three hits and four walks the first two innings. He only gave up one hit and one walk in his last five innings. He is 4-0 at home this season.

Rick Ankiel, signed by the Mets earlier in the day after clearing waivers and playing against the team that revived his career as a position player, just missed a diving catch on Ty Wigginton’s pinch-hit bloop double to shallow center off Scott Rice (1-3) to open the seventh. Matt Carpenter followed Wigginton’s hit with a sharp grounder off Rice’s leg and the ball rolled into foul territory down the first-base line. Wigginton never stopped running and his head-first slide barely beat the tag to snap a 3-3 tie.

Chiefs sign RB Knile Davis

Sports

May 13th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed running back Knile Davis, a third-round pick out of Arkansas.  Davis was selected 96th overall in last month’s draft. Terms were not released Monday.

Davis had a monster sophomore season for Arkansas, running for 1,322 yards and 13 touchdowns. But the 227-pound Davis broke an ankle as a junior, and a combination of uncertainty on the coaching staff and his fumbling problems resulted in a rough junior season. He only ran for 377 yards and two touchdowns last year.

The Chiefs hope Davis can take some of the burden off Pro Bowl ball carrier Jamaal Charles.

Cardinals place Westbrook on 15-day DL

Sports

May 13th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals put right-hander Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation and plan to select the contract of left-hander John Gast in time for Tuesday night’s game against the New York Mets. To make room for Gast on the major league roster, the team said Sunday that injured closer Jason Motte will be moved to the 60-day disabled list while rehabilitating from reconstructive elbow surgery. Westbrook is 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA in seven starts. His DL move was retroactive to May 9.

Gast was the team’s minor league player of the month in April, going 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA in six starts at Triple-A Memphis. He began the season with 32 consecutive scoreless innings.

De La Rosa dominates, Rockies beat Cardinals 8-2

Sports

May 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jorge De La Rosa held the St. Louis Cardinals hitless into the seventh inning and Troy Tulowitzki’s three-run homer ended Colorado’s scoreless streak at 28 innings, sending the Rockies to an 8-2 victory Sunday. De La Rosa did not allow a hit until David Freese’s two-out single in the seventh, answering a pair of pitching gems by St. Louis over the weekend.

Charlie Blackmon added a two-run homer off Jaime Garcia (4-2) for the Rockies, who snapped a four-game skid. They finished with 11 hits after totaling three in consecutive shutout losses to rookie Shelby Miller and Adam Wainwright. Nolan Arenado, who singled with one out in the eighth to break up Wainwright’s no-hit bid Saturday, was among four Rockies with two hits apiece.

Vols QB Tyler Bray getting shot with Chiefs

Sports

May 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Tyler Bray believes that every rookie has something to prove. He may have more than most. The former Tennessee quarterback left school a year early hoping he’d be chosen highly in the draft, but every team passed on him over the course of seven agonizing rounds. So he wound up signing with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent, and is now trying to make the team.

He’s been participating in the Chiefs’ rookie minicamp that finishes up Sunday.  Bray put up big numbers as a starter with the Vols, but questions about his maturity and some minor off-the-field incidents caused his stock to drop. Still, he had one of the biggest arms of the rookies coming out, and the Chiefs hope he can compete for a backup job.

Wainwright leads Cards to a 3-0 victory over the Rockies, Saturday

Sports

May 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 3-0 Cardinals victory over the Colorado Rockies yesterday. The Rockies had been hitless in 49 consecutive at-bats before Nolan Arenado lined a hit to center field. The 49 at-bats is the longest hitless stretch since a 50 at-bat streak against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.

Longtime head of girls athletic union dies at 90

Sports

May 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The longtime head of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has died at age 90. The organization announced that E. Wayne Cooley died Saturday. Cooley became executive secretary of the athletic union in 1954. Over the next 48 years, he led an expansion of interscholastic activities from the single sport of basketball to include track and field, cross country, softball, golf, swimming, tennis, volleyball and soccer.

Much of the expansion came before federal Title IX rules were implemented, expanding opportunities for female athletes. Cooley was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Mercer, Mo. He married Gertrude “Gerry” Konkol in 1944 and they had two children. After his wife’s death, he married Wendy Wykoff in 1987. He graduated from Buena Vista University and was a naval officer during World War II.
