Cards C Molina suspended 1 game for contacting ump

Sports

June 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been suspended one game and fined by Major League Baseball for making contact with umpire Mike Everitt during an argument Sunday. The commissioner’s office announced the penalty Monday evening, minutes before St. Louis hosted Arizona. Molina appealed the decision and was in the starting lineup against the Diamondbacks. The announcement was made by Joe Garagiola Jr., baseball’s Senior Vice President of Standards and Operations.

Molina was thrown out on a close play at first base during Sunday’s game against San Francisco and slammed his helmet to the ground. First base umpire Clint Fagan immediately ejected Molina, who then went to argue. Everitt got in front of Molina, who bumped into him. Molina, a four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, was hitting .347 with three homers, 14 doubles and 27 RBIs this season.

Lynn helps Cardinals beat Diamondbacks

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched seven solid innings and the St. Louis Cardinals got home runs from Yadier Molina and Carlos Beltran in a 7-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. Lynn allowed one run and five hits, struck out six and walked one. He improved to 8-1 for the second consecutive season while becoming the third National League pitcher to reach eight wins, trailing Patrick Corbin’s league-leading nine for Arizona.

Molina hit a leadoff drive in the fifth on the same day he received a one-game suspension from Major League Baseball for making contact with umpire Mike Everitt during an argument on Sunday. The All-Star catcher appealed the decision. Molina’s fourth homer lifted St. Louis to a 5-0 lead. He finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Carpenter throws to live batters

Sports

June 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter threw to live batters Monday for the first time in his comeback attempt from a career-threatening nerve issue. After throwing successful bullpen sessions on May 27 and 30, Carpenter threw about 20 pitches to teammates Shane Robinson and Matt Adams on Monday. He threw another 20 or so without a batter from the mound, while several teammates gathered behind the batting cage to watch.

Carpenter said the next move depends on how his body responds to Monday’s action. If the reaction is positive, he’ll throw two or three more similar sessions before any additional steps such as a rehabilitation appearance. If not, he will once again rest and reset the process which he has done at least twice in his latest comeback attempt.

Des Moines driver anxious for return to Iowa Speedway

Sports

June 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NASCAR driver Michael Annette is looking forward to returning home this weekend when he competes in the DuPont Pioneer 250 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton. The Des Moines native is coming off his best finish of the season in the Nationwide series, a 13th place finish at Dover International Speedway. Annette says he’s ready for a busy week, as he tries to fill ticket requests from friends and family.

Annette missed several races after being injured in a crash at Daytona back in February. Even though he considers the Iowa Speedway his “home track” he will treat it like any other race. But Annette admits winning at the Iowa Speedway would be even sweeter.
