July 15th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A new exhibition about cycling in Iowa and the annual RAGBRAI event will open this week at the State Historical Museum of Iowa.  Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds showcased the “Riding Through History” exhibition during a Monday news conference. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, just before the annual RAGBRAI event begins Sunday.

RAGBRAI – which started in 1973 – is a week-long bicycle ride through Iowa sponsored by the Des Moines Register. The name stands for Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.   Artifacts in the exhibition include bicycles ridden in the race, press clippings about the early years and examples of food served along the route.

The museum will also host a day of events on July 23, when RAGBRAI is scheduled to come through Des Moines.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kenny Perry has completed his comeback from 10 shots down after the second round to win the U.S. Senior Open. Perry shot a final-round 63 and won his second straight senior major by five strokes over Fred Funk. His 64-63 finish set a tournament record for the last 36 holes.

The 52-year-old Kentuckian started the final round two shots behind leader Michael Allen, but was in front to stay after he birdied the second and third holes and Allen bogeyed the third. Perry won the Senior Players Championship two weeks ago.

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Nineteen-year-old Jordan Spieth outlasted David Hearn and Zach Johnson on the fifth hole of a playoff to win the John Deere Classic on Sunday, becoming the youngest winner on the PGA Tour in 82 years. Spieth hit a two-foot par putt to earn a spot in next week’s British Open. He is also the first teenager to win since Ralph Guldahl took the Santa Monica Open in 1931. Spieth forced his way into the playoff by holing out of the bunker from 44 feet on the final hole of regulation.

Spieth, Hearn and Johnson made par on the first four playoff holes, but Spieth made another par while Johnson and Hearn scored bogeys on the fifth.

CHICAGO (AP) — Yadier Molina hit a three-run homer in St. Louis’ four-run ninth inning, and the Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 10-6 on Sunday night in the majors’ final game before the All-Star break.

Allen Craig lined a tiebreaking RBI single into left field before Molina drove an 0-2 pitch from Kevin Gregg (2-2) over the wall in left for his seventh homer. Craig and Molina tuned up for Tuesday’s game in New York with four hits apiece, helping St. Louis to a season-high 21 hits overall.

Chicago went up 4-3 on Darwin Barney’s three-run homer in the sixth and pinch hitter Cody Ransom had a tying two-run double in the eighth, but the Cubs’ bullpen was unable to hold off the NL’s highest-scoring team.

Travelers to face Cards’ Carpenter in rehab start

Sports

July 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – The Arkansas Travelers are set to face 2005 National League Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter as the former St. Louis Cardinals’ ace makes a rehab start for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals.  Carpenter is trying to work his way back from nerve issues that have sidelined the 38-year-old right-hander since before the start of spring training and put his career in jeopardy.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny has said Carpenter will be limited to a pitch count in the “60s-range” when he starts Monday’s game in Springfield against Arkansas. Carpenter gets one month before a decision must be made about if he’ll play in the majors this season.

Monday’s game is to start shortly after 7 p.m. in Springfield.
