Iowa 17th in latest AP Poll

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa is 17th in the latest AP College Football Poll. The Hawkeyes are 9-2 after erasing an early 10-0 deficit in a 33-23 win over Illinois. The Hawkeyes got a defensive touchdown on a pick six from linebacker Jack Campbell and a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Charlie Jones and are on the verge of a 10 win season despite ranking last in the Big Ten in total offense. Iowa won despite managing only 83 yards of passing.

A run game which has been anemic all season has shown signs of life the past few weeks.

DNR biologist says Storm Lake may reset over winter after strong blue green algae bloom

A fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Iowa’s fourth largest natural lake went through a number of changes this past year. Ben Wallace says last spring the water in Storm Lake was exceptionally clear.

The water in Storm Lake was green for several weeks, according to Wallace.

Wallace says the water levels in Storm Lake were lower due to the drought and that exacerbated algae growth.

Wallace made his comments during a presentation to the Storm Lake City Council.

Man wanted for Minnesota murder arrested in Waterloo

(Radio Iowa) – U.S. Marshals arrested a man in Waterloo who has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting in a Minnesota parking garage. Police say a 37-year-old man was shot to death in late August as he fought back while being robbed by four men in St. Paul, Minnesota. A team led by U.S. Marshals in Minnesota and Iowa tracked one of the suspects to Waterloo. According to a news release from the agency, officers saw 30-year-old Franklin Spriggs leaving a house in Waterloo at about noon Friday, they followed him and arrested him in a residential area in Waterloo.

Spriggs faces a charge of second degree murder. According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Spriggs has three prior felony convictions for assault and a felony charge related to a crime committed for the benefit of a gang.

UNI gets at-large bid to FCS Playoffs

(Radio Iowa) – For the 22nd time the UNI Panthers are playoff bound as they visit Eastern Washington in Saturday’s opening round of the FCS playoffs. The Panthers finished 6-5 after a 41-3 win over Western Illinois and a strong schedule helped them get in.

That’s UNI coach Mark Farley. The Missouri Valley Conference got a record six teams in the field.

The Panthers were forced to wait a day to see if their season would continue.

The FCS Playoffs conclude with the national championship in Frisco, TX on Saturday, January 8, 2022.

Davidson races past Drake 45-14 in season finale

The Drake Bulldogs fell to Davidson 45-14 in the regular season finale on Saturday. Davidson clinched the Pioneer Football League title with the win and get an automatic berth into the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

Davidson racked up 586 yards of offense on a whopping 93 plays in the game. 470 of those yards came on the ground as the Wildcats improved to 8-2 on the season.

Drake was only able to muster 190 yards of their own and end the season with a record of 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the PFL.

UNI has record setting day in win over Western Illinois

UNI closed out the regular season with a 41-3 win over Western Illinois on Saturday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The Panthers set a record for most sacks in a game with 12 and Dom Williams had a record setting 99-yard touchdown run. Williams’ run put the Panthers up 10-3 at halftime and they pulled away in the 2nd half.

Williams rushed for a career high 168 yards in the Panther victory. UNI improved to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Valley.

Iowa versus Drake women’s basketball game cancelled

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa women’s basketball team has canceled Sunday’s home game against Drake out of abundance of caution due to positive COVID-19 test results within the program. In addition, Iowa’s appearance at next week’s Cancun Challenge has been canceled.

“We’re obviously disappointed but understand this is the right decision,” said Lisa Bluder, P. Sue Beckwith, M.D., Head Women’s Basketball Coach. “Our team and staff  have followed best practices. But unfortunately, a number of individuals experienced symptoms and tested positive. We will continue to follow the guidance of our medical staff and look forward to returning to the court.”

The Iowa Athletic Ticket Office will be communicating with individuals who had purchased tickets to Sunday’s game.

Oklahoma holds off Iowa State 28-21

The Iowa State Cyclones were driving to try to tie the game against Oklahoma in the final two minutes but Brock Purdy’s pass to Chase Allen sailed high and was intercepted. Okahoma came away with the 28-21 win in Norman.

Caleb Williams ran for a 72 yard touchdown in the first quarter and Brock Purdy gave up a costly fumble that the Sooners returned for a score with 9 seconds left in the first half.

Breece Hall ran for the opening touchdown of the game and tied the all-time NCAA record with 23 consecutive games with a rushing score. The Cyclones outgained the Sooners 361-305 but gave up three turnovers in the game.

Iowa State falls to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12. Next up for the Cyclones is the regular season finale at home on Friday against TCU at 3:30 p.m.

Iowa gets past Illinois 33-23

The Iowa Hawkeyes improved to 9-2 on the season with a 33-23 win over Illinois on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

Charlie Jones returned a kickoff for 100 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Jack Campbell returned an interception 32-yards for a score in the fourth to help the Hawkeyes get the win. Tyler Goodson ran for 132 yards.

Iowa improved to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten. Next up for the Hawkeyes is the regular season finale at Nebraska on Friday at 12:30 p.m. We’ll have coverage on KJAN starting at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.
