Cyclones seeking breakthrough in ’13

Sports

August 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — For years, Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads has insisted that the Cyclones are bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than ever. This could be the season that the Big 12 learns just how far Iowa State has come under Rhoads.

The breakthrough under Rhoads hasn’t come quite yet. The Cyclones have finished 6-7 in each of the past two season and they’ll have to replace 11 starters, more than any other team in the league.

There’s optimism in Ames that Rhoads can keep Iowa State from falling off the proverbial cliff in 2013. The Cyclones open the season at home Aug. 31 against Northern Iowa.

PED Comment Costs Jack Clark, Co-host Jobs

August 12th, 2013 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Former St. Louis Cardinals star Jack Clark is out of his sports talk radio job after his on-air comments alleging Albert Pujols took performance-enhancing drugs.

Clark said on the air last week on WGNU in St. Louis that Pujols’ former trainer told him 10 years ago that he injected PEDs into Pujols, a Cardinals star who now plays for the Los Angeles Angels. Pujols responded with a strong denial and said he planned to take legal action against Clark and his employers.

Early Saturday, the company that owns the show, insideSTL Enterprises LLC, said in a statement that the show hosted by Clark and Kevin Slaten has been cancelled.

A telephone listing for Clark could not be found. A message seeking comment from Slaten was not returned.

Chiefs’ Charles leaves practice with foot injury

Sports

August 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles left midway through the Chiefs’ practice Monday with what coach Andy Reid called a strained foot. X-rays were negative.  Charles was participating in an 11-on-11 portion of practice pitting the No. 1 offense against the top defense when he walked off the field and spent a moment speaking with trainers. He climbed into a cart and was driven up a long hillside to the locker room.

Dozens of people watching practice tweeted that Charles had been “carted off the field,” and that triggered a rush of speculation about the nature or severity of the injury.  Charles missed nearly an entire season two years ago with a torn ACL in his left knee.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa coach Lisa Bluder has added former Morehead State assistant Lacey Goldwire to her staff. Goldwire spent four years as a student and then graduate assistant for Oklahoma State before joining Morehead State in 2012.

Goldwire played collegiately at East Central University in Oklahoma, where she scored 1,340 points. Bluder says Goldwire’s main responsibilities will be in developing Iowa’s wing players and recruiting.

Smoke released from hospital; resting at home

Sports

August 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Three-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart has been released from the hospital and is resting at home. His team, Stewart-Haas Racing, tweeted the news on Sunday night: “TonyStewart is out of the hospital & resting as comfortably as he can at home. Thx for the thoughts & prayers.” The tweet closed with a “SmokeWillRise” hashtag. Stewart broke his right leg in two places last Monday night in a sprint car race in Iowa and is out indefinitely after two surgeries to repair the damage.

A five-time winner at Watkins Glen International, Stewart missed race Sunday, snapping his streak of 521 consecutive Cup starts and dropping him six spots to 17th in the Sprint Cup standings. Max Papis drove Stewart’s No. 14 Chevrolet and finished 15th. Several drivers had stickers on their cars honoring Stewart with the message: “Get Well Smoke 14.” The team is expected to name a replacement driver for Stewart as early as Monday.

Cardinals avoid sweep, beat Cubs 8-4

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pete Kozma singled home the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals ended a four-game losing streak, beating the Chicago Cubs 8-4 and avoiding a sweep. Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig each had three hits and drove in a run. Jon Jay and David Freese both drove in two runs, though they only had one hit between them. The Cardinals dropped five of six to begin a 10-game homestand.

Edward Mujica worked the last two innings for his 31st save in 33 chances, overcoming Starlin Castro’s leadoff double in the eighth while working with a one-run cushion.

George, Miller lead revamped LB corps for Iowa St.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State had the luxury of leaning on one of nation’s best linebacker duos of Jake Knott and A.J. Klein for the past three years. Both are now in the NFL, and how the Cyclones fill their void may be crucial to their success in 2013.

Iowa State has to replace a pair of first-team All-Big 12 performers from the same position group. Knott and Klein were the centerpiece of coordinator Wally Burnham’s defense — and both were capable of game-changing plays.

The Cyclones will instead rely on senior captain Jeremiah George, who was selected to the Butkus Award watch list, and junior Jevohn Miller.

Chiefs return to camp without No. 1 pick Fisher

Sports

August 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs returned to practice on Sunday without right tackle Eric Fisher, the No. 1 overall pick who hurt his right shoulder in their preseason opener. Fisher also hurt his left thumb in Friday night’s game in New Orleans, briefly leaving the sideline to get it taped up. But coach Andy Reid said after the team returned to training camp that Fisher missed practice because of a separate shoulder injury.

Reid said it was a muscle injury and didn’t expect Fisher to be out long. The Chiefs offense struggled throughout the workout at Missouri Western as they got ready to play their first home preseason game Friday night against San Francisco. On several occasions, the group didn’t even get a play off before a whistle was blown.
