ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Special teams haven’t been all that special for the Kansas City Chiefs the last few years, at least, when it comes to the punt and kickoff return teams. The Chiefs haven’t brought a punt back for a touchdown in more than two years, and they haven’t had a kick return touchdown in nearly four. They aim to change all that under the guise of Dave Toub.
He was hired by new Chiefs coach Andy Reid after a successful run in Chicago, where Toub helped to turn Devin Hester into one of the most dangerous return men in the game. The special teams overhaul paid off in the preseason opener. Dexter McCluster had a 55-yard punt return and Knile Davis returned a kickoff 79 yards on a banner day for them.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adron Chambers singled home the winning run in the 14th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates and cut into their NL Central lead with a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night. Sam Freeman (1-0) allowed a walk in a scoreless 14th for the Cardinals, who saddled the Pirates with their fourth straight loss and pulled within two games of them with a win in the 4-hour, 55-minute game.
Pittsburgh had four hits the first time through the order against Adam Wainwright and led 3-0 after two innings on homers by Andrew McCutchen and Jordy Mercer. They had six hits the rest of the way. Both teams had chances in extra innings before the Cardinals, who had dropped four of five, cashed in.
Jon Jay singled off Jared Hughes (2-3) with one out in the 14th with his fourth hit. Jay stole second and then raced home and beat left fielder Starling Marte’s throw.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Beltran was in the St. Louis Cardinals for the opener of their series against NL Central-leading Pittsburgh, making a quick recovery from a bruised right foot. Beltran was taken out in the sixth inning Sunday after fouling a ball off the foot. The Cardinals had a day off Monday and Beltran and the team had been hopeful he could return.
Beltran was batting .305 with a team-leading 20 home runs and 62 RBIs. The switch-hitter was hurt batting right-handed and he was batting left-handed against the Pirates’ Charlie Morton, lessening the chance of aggravating the bruise with another foul ball.
The Cardinals added a hitter to the bench, recalling infielder Jermaine Curtis from Triple-A Memphis and demoting right-handed reliever Michael Blazek.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles sat out Chiefs practice on Tuesday after straining his right foot the previous day’s work out. Charles was working with the No. 1 offense against the Chiefs’ first-team defense near the goal line when he walked toward the medical tent. He spent a couple minutes talking to trainers before climbing into a cart and being driven to the locker room.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said following the workout that Charles would play in Friday night’s preseason game against San Francisco only if he’s able. Charles attended Tuesday’s practice but joined the rest of the injured Chiefs away from the practice field. He wasn’t wearing a boot and didn’t appear to be limping.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The electronic message board where the St. Louis Cardinals lineup is posted left no room for debate: Clubhouse Closed. Coaches Included. A breather was mandated Monday before the NL Central-leading Pirates come to town. Manager Mike Matheny said before they get back to business, players need to get away.
Adam Wainwright, who in recent starts has lacked the put-away pitch that makes him the staff ace, got a similar message. He has steadfastly maintained fatigue is not an issue, but figures to be fresh after three extra days rest entering the series opener Tuesday night.
AMES, Iowa – The “sold out” sign has been hung for 2013 season football tickets at Iowa State.
More than 43,000 football season ticket packages have been sold. The season ticket sellout is unprecedented in Cyclone history.
“We are completely sold out of our season ticket inventory. The only remaining tickets are single-game tickets (except for the Iowa game which sold out late last week) and an end-of-the-year mini-pack from unused inventory of visiting team allotments,” Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. “We fully anticipate that our first four home games will all completely sell out and that is unprecedented for our program.”
Pollard noted that Junior Cyclone Club memberships are still available for $59 each, but those supplies are quickly dwindling, too.
“We never expected to get to the spot where we would have to cutoff sales to the Junior Cyclone Club but we are close to reaching that level,” Pollard said. “Families should act quickly to secure those kids’ club tickets before we have to close sales.”
Coach Paul Rhoads celebrated the enthusiasm of the Cyclone fan base at his media day Sunday, too.
“For the third straight year, we’ve set season ticket marks,” Rhoads said. “The loyal Cyclone fan base is becoming recognized around the country for the support they give us at Jack Trice Stadium.”
Iowa State 2013 single-game tickets (except for Iowa) will go on sale Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the Athletics Ticket Office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Those tickets can also be purchased at Cyclones.com or by phone (888-478-2925 toll free or 515-294-1816).
A three-game mini-pack featuring Oklahoma State, TCU and Kansas also goes on sale Wednesday for $90 each.
