No. 13 ISU routs Penn State 93-59; Advances to GCS Championship

ESTERO, Florida – No. 13 Iowa State (6-0) cruised past Penn State (4-2), 93-59, to advance to the Gulf Coast Showcase Championship game in Estero, Florida.

Competing with a limited roster, the Cyclones made the most of their opportunities, shooting 47.1 percent from the field and connecting on a season-high 18 triples to rout PSU.

Iowa State competed for the first 33 minutes of action with just six players with Emily Ryan (9), Ashley Joens (13), Aubrey Joens (21), Morgan Kane (11), Beatriz Jordão (13) and Lexi Donarski (12) giving the Cyclones a 73-43 lead before the ISU bench was emptied. All 10 Cyclones who saw action would score, as Iowa State completed the rout of PSU.

UNI falls to Eastern Washington in FCS Playoffs

The UNI Panther football team saw their postseason run come to an end on Saturday with a 19-9 loss to No. 4 Eastern Washington. Eastern Washington led the entire way behind one touchdown pass and one touchdown run from quarterback Eric Barriere. The Eagles led 9-7 at half and scored ten straight in the second half to seize control.

Matt Morrissey came out in the second half to replace Panther starting quarterback Theo Day. Day threw the Panthers only touchdown in the second quarter to Sam Schnee on a 14 yard connection.

Eastern Washington was held well below their offensive averages but still piled up 412 yards of offense. The Eagles advance to face No. 6 seed Montana on Friday, December 3td in Missoula, Montana at 6:00 p.m.

UNI ends their season with a record of 6-6. It was UNI’s 22nd appearance in the FCS Playoffs.

Iowa’s Fran McCaffery previews Monday night’s game at Virginia

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa coach Fran McCaffery will find out a lot more about his team Monday night (11/29) when the Hawkeyes visit Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Hawkeyes are 6-0 against a soft early schedule.

After stumbling early with losses to Navy and Houston, Virginia has won four straight and McCaffery says the Cavaliers excel on defense.

It is Iowa first true road game since a 78-76 loss at Illinois on March eighth of 2020 right before the pandemic shut the season down.

It is a 6:00pm, Iowa time tip-off in Charlottesville.

Cass County Supervisors to meet Tuesday morning

(Atlantic, Iowa) The Cass County Board of Supervisors have a regular meeting set for Tuesday morning in their Boardroom at the Courthouse. On the agenda for their 9-a.m. session, is a regular report from Engineer Trent Wolken, with regard to Secondary Roads. The Board will then move to act on approving the employment of an IT/GIS Director, and a Resolution authorizing an internal loan to temporarily cover the costs prior to receipt, of General Obligation Bond proceeds.

Discussion and possible action, will follow with regard to the possible use of funding from the American Rescue Plan (for COVID relief), and consideration of a request regarding radios and repeaters for Firefighters/EMS providers. Afterward, the Board may appoint a member to the Cass County Conservation Board for the remainder of a term.

A report is expected to be received also, from the Cass County Mental Health and General Relief Coordinator, for the month of October.

Audubon School Board Special meeting to be held Monday (11/29)

(Audubon, Iowa) – A special meeting of the Audubon School Board will be held 7-a.m. Monday in the High School Board Room. During their early session, the Board will act on approving a Resolution appointing the Paying Agent, Bond Registrar, and Transfer Agent and agreements for those same parties. They will also act on approving: a Form of Tax Exemption Certificate; Continuing Disclosure Certificate; and a Resolution for the Issuance and Providing for and securing, the payment of bonds.

MICHAEL RASMUSSEN, 73, of Kirkman, died Oct. 29, 2021, at home. A Memorial service for MICHAEL RASMUSSEN will take place 10:30-a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2nd, at the Harvest of Hope, in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Burial is in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Kirkman.

His wife Suzanne Rasmussen, of Kirkman.
His sons – Kevin Rasmussen, of Harlan, and Scott (Michelle) Rasmussen, of Elk Horn.
His daughter – Gina (Matthew) Glenn, of Harlan.

DEBRA McDERMOTT, 70, of Atlantic, died Friday, Nov. 26th, at Atlantic Specialty Care. A Celebration of Life for DEBRA McDERMOTT will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4th, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Visitation with the family present will be held prior to the service at the funeral home, Saturday, and beginning at 9:30-a.m.; Immediately following the service, you are invited for lunch and fellowship at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club, from Noon until 2:30-p.m., Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Iowa and the Shriner’s Hospital.

Malvern man arrested after high-speed chase

(Pacific Junction, Iowa) – A traffic stop Saturday evening outside of Pacific Junction resulted in a pursuit and the arrest of a man from Mills County. The Mills County Sheriff’s Office says at around 6:24-p.m., deputies tried to stop a 2008 Chrysler 300 at Highway 34/190th Street, but the vehicle failed to stop. Speeds during the resulting chase exceeded 100-mph before the vehicle stopped near mile marker 40 on Interstate 29.

The driver of the car, 33-year-old Aaron Wade Opdyke, of Malvern, was arrested. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, authorities found nearly seven-ounces of marijuana, along with methamphetamine.

Opdyke was transported to the Mills County Jail and held on $15,000 bond.

Drake falls to Alabama in Orlando

The Drake Bulldogs fell 80-71 to No. 10 Alabama on Friday in the second round of the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando. Jahvon Quinerly scored eight points in the final 4:29 to lead Alabama to the victory after the game was tied at 61 with 5:16 left. Quinerly finished with 18 points to lead all scorers.

DJ Wilkins led the Bulldogs with 17 points and Shanquan Hemphill had 15 points and 6 rebounds. The Bulldogs were down 33-18 in the first half before and 11-0 run before half brought them back into the game.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a matchup on Sunday against North Texas at 9:30 a.m. to finish their trip to Orlando.
