Pelini goes off on fans and the media

Sports

September 17th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska coach Bo Pelini went on a profanity-laced tirade against fans and two newspaper writers in 2011 audio that surfaced on the sports website Deadspin. The audio posted Monday catches Pelini speaking with Husker Sports Network play-by-play man Greg Sharpe before his postgame radio interview following Nebraska’s win over Ohio State in October 2011. The conversation was off air.

Pelini had been criticized by fans and media in the days leading to the Ohio State game for the Huskers’ performance the week before in a 31-point loss at Wisconsin. In the audio, Pelini repeatedly uses an expletive to refer to what he calls “fair-weather” fans.

After the audio went viral Monday, Pelini released the following statement:

“I want to sincerely apologize for my comments from two years ago which became public today.  I take full responsibility for these comments.  They were spoken in a private room following the Ohio State game.  I was venting following a series of emotional events which led to this moment.  That being said, these comments are in no way indicative of my true feelings.  I love it here in Nebraska and feel fortunate to be associated with such a great University and fan base.  I again apologize to anyone whom I have offended,” Pelini said.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – Iowan Zach Johnson shot a final round 6-under-65 to win the BMW Championship. Johnson completed the tournament two shots in front of Nick Watney and three in front of Jim Furyk. The round was completed on Monday because of bad weather the previous afternoon.
Tiger Woods began the day at minus-9 and completed play the same way after an even-par 71.

Chiefs off to winning start through first 2 games

Sports

September 17th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have a whole lot of time to enjoy their winning start with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles looming Thursday night. The Chiefs pushed their record to 2-0 with a 17-16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, matching their victory total from all of last year. But by the time most fans were reliving the win on their recliners, the Chiefs’ coaching staff was breaking down film of the Eagles.

They worked late Sunday night and then got back to the office early Monday, finishing off a game plan that they hope will slow down Chip Kelly’s fast-paced offense. The game will also be a homecoming for Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who was fired in January after 14 seasons leading the Eagles.

Rockies keep Cardinals tied for 1st with 6-2 win

Sports

September 17th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Todd Helton started his final homestand with a key single in the eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Monday night. Charlie Blackmon had three hits and drove in three runs for the Rockies, who prevented the Cardinals from taking over sole possession of first place in the NL Central. They remained tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who lost 2-0 to San Diego.

Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams had two hits each for the Cardinals. Helton was playing in front of Colorado fans for the first time since he announced his plans to retire at the end of the season, his 17th. He received a standing ovation when he came to the plate in the first, and Cardinals starter Lance Lynn stood behind the mound and waited as the crowd saluted Helton.

Treynor H.S. Football Coach assaulted Friday night

News, Sports

September 16th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A victory by the Treynor High School Cardinals turned ugly last Friday night, after an angry parent allegedly assaulted Treynor High School football coach Steve Owens. According to the Daily NonPareil, the incident occurred at around 10:15 p.m., when Michael Beard, whose son plays for the team, grabbed Owens by the shirt and shoved him against a desk.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker told the paper Owens and an assistant coach were sitting in a high school classroom after the Cardinals defeated West Central Valley 27-26 in Treynor. Beard’s son entered the room to discuss his playing time in the game. Danker says Michael Beard entered shortly thereafter and yelling and complaining about his boy’s lack of playing time.

Danker says Michael Beard allegedly grabbed Owens by the shirt at his chest and shoved the football coach into a nearby desk. After the assistant coach yelled at Beard to stop, the man eventually left the room. Medical personnel transported Owens, who has a heart condition, to a Council Bluffs hospital as a precaution. He was treated and later released.

Deputies questioned Beard at his home and arrested him on suspicion of simple assault and disorderly conduct. He served time in jail over the weekend.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Nine Iowa football players and coaches were robbed of cellphones and cash from their locker room during Saturday night’s victory at Iowa State. The Hawkeyes noticed the missing items when they returned to their locker room following a 27-21 win over the rival Cyclones on Saturday night.

The Iowa State University police department said Monday the locker room was staffed by private security. Only those with credentials were supposed to be allowed in.  Campus police are urging anyone with information about the break-in to contact them.
