U of IA to pay $300,000 in rowing case

Sports

October 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa will pay $300,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a former women’s rowing participant who claimed that intense training workouts left her with debilitating leg injuries.  The settlement avoids trial in the case of Margaret Krusing, who argued that former coach Mandi Kowal imposed excessive training requirements. It was approved Friday and released to The Associated Press under the public records law.

Krusing joined the team in 2007 and was unprepared for the running and biking regimen Kowal required. She soon started complaining of burning in her legs and numbness in her feet. She developed exertional compartment syndrome, a condition that made it hard for her to walk and required numerous surgeries.

Both sides say they’re pleased to settle the lawsuit, which was filed in 2010.

October 14th, 2013 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Jarvis West was lauded by the Big 12 and the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) for his performance vs. Texas Tech on Saturday. A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., West earned Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors and national kickoff returner of the week accolades by the CFPA.

West returned Iowa State’s first non-onside kickoff return for a touchdown since 1994 (Troy Davis) at Texas Tech, going 95 yards for the score on ISU’s first touchdown of the afternoon. The 95-yard kickoff return ties for the third-longest in school history.

West also had four punt returns for 46 yards, including a career-long 38-yarder in the third quarter.

West is one of the most prolific kickoff returners in school history. His career 26.10 average on kickoff returns ranks second all-time in school history behind Luther Blue (26.47; 1973-76).

Ramirez’s status uncertain for Dodgers in NLCS

Sports

October 13th, 2013 by admin

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Los Angeles Dodgers’ offense is struggling, and they might have to face Adam Wainwright without their top hitter in Game 3 of the NL championship series.    Shortstop Hanley Ramirez had a CT scan on his left ribs Sunday, and the results were not yet available. He got hit by a pitch from Joe Kelly in the opener but stayed in to play all 13 innings of a 3-2 loss Friday.  Ramirez was a late scratch for Game 2, a 1-0 defeat that left the Dodgers trailing St. Louis 2-0 in the best-of-seven series.

Wainwright will start for the Cardinals on Monday night against rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu, who stumbled against Atlanta in losing his playoff debut in the division series.  Dodgers manager Don Mattingly says Ramirez keeps telling him he is going to play, but Mattingly said he’s got to be able to swing a bat in order to be in the starting lineup.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Arrowhead Stadium is once again the loudest stadium in the NFL. This time, it’s official. The Kansas City Chiefs broke the world record for an outdoor sports stadium in their 24-7 win over Oakland on Sunday when they reached 137.5 decibels in the closing minutes.  An official from Guinness World Records told The Associated Press confirmed that Chiefs fans broke the previous record of 136.6 set by Seahawks fans during a game against San Francisco earlier this year.

The Chiefs have long claimed that their facility is the loudest in the NFL.The record-setting attempt was planned by Chiefs fans but with support of the organization, which paid $7,500 to fly an adjudicator from Guinness to Kansas City to document the effort.

Chiefs Sack Raiders, Move to 6-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jamaal Charles ran for two touchdowns, the Kansas City defense harassed Oakland quarterback Terrelle Pryor into throwing three second-half interceptions and the Chiefs remained unbeaten with a 24-7 victory over the Raiders on Sunday.

After winning just twice last season, Kansas City (6-0) continued the second-best start in franchise history. The Chiefs won their first nine games during the 2003 season.

The Chiefs piled up 10 sacks while ending a three-game skid to the Raiders (2-4), and a six-game losing streak against them at Arrowhead Stadium.

Pryor threw for 216 yards and a touchdown, but his interceptions proved costly.

The first led to Charles’ go-ahead touchdown run, the second led to Ryan Succop’s fourth-quarter field goal, and Husain Abdullah returned the last one for a touchdown to seal the win.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) – Backup quarterback Davis Webb threw for three touchdowns and 415 yards in place of the injured Baker Mayfield to lead No. 20 Texas Tech over Iowa State 42-35 on Saturday.

Webb was 35 for 56 with an interception and Kenny Williams, DeAndre Washington and Sadale Foster each ran for a score for Texas Tech (6-0, 3-0 Big 12). The Red Raiders are bowl eligible at the earliest date since 2008 in their first season under coach Kliff Kingsbury.

The Cyclones (1-4, 0-2) got a 95-yard kickoff return and 38-yard punt return from Jarvis West, and 12 points off three turnovers by the Red Raiders.

The Cyclones pulled within 42-35 on a touchdown pass from Sam Richardson to E. J. Bibbs with less than 2 minutes left. Richardson was 15 for 38 for 168 yards and a touchdown.

Cardinals RHP Lynn to start for Game 4 of NLCS

Sports

October 12th, 2013 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Lance Lynn will start Game 4 of the NL championship series for the St. Louis Cardinals, perhaps strengthening his case when he earned the win in Game 1.

Rookie 15-game winner Shelby Miller had also been under consideration. Miller warmed up early in Game 1 and manager Mike Matheny said Saturday he’d be available in the bullpen in Game 2.

Lynn worked the last two innings of the Cardinals’ 3-2, 13-inning victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He took the loss in Game 2 of the NL division series against the Pittsburgh and has failed pitch five innings in any of his three career postseason starts the last two seasons.

Cardinals Edge Dodgers for 2-0 Lead in NLCS

Sports

October 12th, 2013 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Rookie Michael Wacha pitched into the seventh inning with zero margin for error and the St. Louis Cardinals silenced the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second straight day, winning 1-0 Saturday for a 2-0 lead in the NL championship series.

The Cardinals managed only two hits off Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, but Jon Jay’s sacrifice fly set up by A.J. Ellis’ passed ball in the fifth stood up.

The Dodgers’ scoreless streak in the NLCS reached 19 innings. Rookie fireballer Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth with a heater reaching 101 mph, fanning pinch-hitter Andre Ethier on three pitches to end it.

A day after outlasting Los Angeles 3-2 in 13 innings, the Cardinals moved two wins away from the World Series.

Game 3 is Monday at Dodger Stadium, with Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright facing rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu.
