ISU’s Christofferson Named a Candidate for Senior CLASS Award

Sports

October 30th, 2013 by Jim Field

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Iowa State senior women’s basketball player Hallie Christofferson has been selected as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Christofferson holds a 3.41 grade point average while majoring in graphic design. She was a member of the Big 12 honor roll and was named an ISU Scholar-Athlete in 2013.

Christofferson has participated in various community service projects during her time at Iowa State. The senior has volunteered with the St. Jude’s Walk the past three years, the I-35 Program and assisted with Jr. Cyclone clinics among other activities.

On the court, Christofferson has established herself as one of the best players in the country. She was named an honorable mention All-American by the AP and WBCA last season. Her performance also did not go unnoticed by league coaches as she was one of just four student-athletes in the Big 12 to be named a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First-Team. She was most recently named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 list, which is given to the nation’s top player.

Christofferson is also the only returning player in the nation to have led her team in field goal percentage (.516), three-point percentage (.401), free-throw percentage (.862) and points per game (15.6).

Christofferson is one of 30 student-athletes named to the list, which will be narrowed to 10 midway through the regular season. At that point, fan voting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.

Iowa State is one of just five schools in the country to have a student-athlete named to the initial list the last two seasons joining California, Baylor, Penn State and Kentucky. Chelsea Poppens represented the Cyclones last season and was named as one of 10 finalists.

Chiefs waive Brock, make series of roster moves

Sports

October 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have waived tight end Kevin Brock and elevated offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The Chiefs also signed tight end Dominique Jones to the practice squad Wednesday.

Brock had three catches for 36 yards in four games for the Chiefs this season. He’d become expendable with the return of Anthony Fasano from an ankle sprain a couple of weeks ago. Watkins has been on the practice squad since Sept. 1. He played in one game for the St. Louis Rams as a rookie a year ago.

Jones started three of the 10 games he played in two seasons with the Colts. The former undrafted free agent has three catches for 42 yards.

Iowa furbearer season begins this weekend

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

October 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s fur trapping season will begin Saturday, and the Department of Natural Resources says trappers should have good luck with strong populations of most species. The DNR says fur harvesters should find plenty of raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, river otters and mink. Furbearer biologist Vince Evelsizer says only muskrats and gray fox will be scarce.

The furbearer season will end for most species on Jan. 31. The DNR says there has been an increase in the number of Iowa trappers in each of the past three years and the number will likely top 19,000 this season.

LB James Morris key to revitalized Hawkeyes

Sports

October 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Linebacker James Morris has been a fixture on Iowa’s defense since 2010, emerging as a star freshman on a team that finished well below expectations. Morris is closing an up-and-down career with one of the better seasons in recent school history.

Morris was honored as the Big Ten’s defensive player of the week for second time in 2013 on Monday. He had 2½ tackles for loss, a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery last week in a 17-10 overtime win over Northwestern.

Morris and the Hawkeyes (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) head into Saturday’s home game against No. 22 Wisconsin (5-2, 3-1) with a shot at bowl eligibility after missing out on the postseason in 2012.

Hopes high at ISU despite changing roster

Sports

October 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State lost four of its top six scorers from last season and was still picked to finish fourth in the Big 12. It looks like the rest of the league is through doubting Fred Hoiberg and the Cyclones. Despite yet another major overhaul of its roster, Iowa State is expected to compete for its third straight NCAA tournament berth in 2013-14.

The Cyclones bring back senior forward Melvin Ejim, a preseason first-team All-Big 12 selection, and emerging sophomore Georges Niang. Transfer DeAndre Kane will take over at point guard after averaging 15 points a game last season at Marshall, and guards Monte Morris and Matt Thomas should contribute immediately as freshmen.
